Pure adventure, rugged, unique, and off-the-beaten path - there's no place like Providencia.

Once in Providencia, Monasterio del Viento (Monastery of Wind) adds to the magic and mystery of the island. Wake up to a glorious pink sunrise, step out onto the balcony perched just above the calm turquoise waters while the kitchen staff prepares morning breakfast with tropical juices, Colombian coffee, fresh cut papaya, organic eggs and delicious local arepas. How about a young sweet coconut to finish?

El Monasterio del Viento sits on the small volcanic island of Old Providence and Santa Catalina; hidden away in the most remote corner of the Caribbean.

Inhabited by warm, loving and caring people, Providencia is a place where nature and all her gifts are valued and protected. An environment of peace and tranquility, harmonious and unified, not fragmented nor exploited.

Located on Maracaibo Bay, El Monasterio is perched above a sea of seven shades of turquoise looking out towards Crab Key, directly within the borders of the National Park McBean Lagoon. This is part of the expansive UNESCO designated marine territory called the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve.

The house itself has been lovingly restored with charming artistic details throughout. It represents the best of Caribbean style living. It's rustique, comfortable and casual, with spectacular views of the water in every direction. A soft year round breeze can be felt throughout the house.

The covered deck on the water (palapa) is ideal for early morning meditation and Yoga. Take a nap after lunch on one of the double lounge chairs or hammocks strung up around house.

Inside the main house there are two large open and airy bedrooms, each containing a full ensuite bathroom. Both look out over the turquoise water below. One has a fantastic large shaded veranda, complete with hammocks, chair and table. It's the best place to unwind, anytime of the day. The other section of the property has a large two level loft area, ideal for families with children staying at the house. The lower has a queen and a single bed and a full bathroom. The upper level has another queen and single bed in a spacious area.

To fully enjoy Monasterio, you will be pampered by our staff which includes a wonderful local cook, and a chef (not available year round). They team up to combine the local caribbean flavors of Providencia with high international cuisine. Add to that your private concierge and travel photographer (photography is optional, not available year round and the cost is not included in the quote). Last, we have housecleaning so that all your time is spent with your family and enjoying the island.

ACTIVITIES:

Snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming in the gentle warm waters are literally right in front of you. Paddle over to Crab Key!! Just step into the water in front of the house if you feel like going for a swim. If you're the type of person who prefers to laze around on an idyllic white sandy beach all day, then you're in for a treat. There are numerous long stretches of shaded beaches, two of which come with the most friendly little beach bars. One is owned by Richard Hawkins..aka.'.Mr Richards' on Southwest Bay. The other is Roland's Roots Bar on Manzanillo Beach.

With the world's 3rd longest continuous barrier reef, immense underwater biodiversity, warm tropical waters and excellent underwater visibility, Old Providence is Colombia's top diving destination. Once again all of the surrounding seas and reef areas have been designated as a marine protected area by UNESCO. There are several excellent dive operations on the Island.

Our chef with his assistant Gigiola is ready to prepare and share with you many of the island recipes. Enjoy locally caught fresh fish, crab, conch and lobster. If you are a vegetarian or prefer something different NO problem...there are plenty of unique island grown vegetables and fruits to savor. We can accommodate most dietary requests

Other activities include...

- Trail Hiking to the peak ( an easy 2 hour hike )

- Guided horseback riding in the hills or beaches.

- Guided Artisanal fishing.

- Fantastic scuba diving.

- Kayaking facilities next door

Full Board Dining experience- In order to offer a five star dining experience in a remote location, we offer full board. Price is US $65.00/day per person. Children under 10 pay $45.00/day per person. Food charges are to be paid locally upon arrival. Of course we understand you might want to explore a meal elsewhere and we can offer 1/2 board for $50.00/day/person, $35.00 for children under 10.

PLEASE NOTE--- The housekeeping is included in the rates.

The property is perfectly suited for honeymooners, families, weddings, groups or as a 'retreat destination'. Also consider it, if you're in need of a complete 'DIGITAL DETOX'. The house is best appreciated when you can unplug and unwind.

It's absolutely an ideal house to base a Kite-surfing getaway. In it's infancy on the island Kite surfing holds tremendous potential, especially the area right in front of the house which enjoys consistent offshore winds and the water inside the reef break is relatively calm.

If you're interested in seeing a really beautiful video that gives the feel of the island and its' culture please search 'VIMEO Scott Sporleder' or 'VIMEO Juan Felipe Cortes'. Sorry but this site does not allow for hyperlinks. Scott's video is titled 'Isla Providencia' and Juan's is titled 'Roots'.

Local Culture: The Raizal families of Old Providence are truly blessed. It is a community of people that are so warm, generous and respectful. If you get a chance to go to the island, please take time to experience fully in their way of living, their calm balanced and peaceful outlook. Find the opportunity to sit down with a local family to immerse yourself in an old story about the colorful history of the island. Perhaps a visit to a beautiful garden in the mountains tended to by a well known farmer, or befriend a gifted artist or talented chef. Calypso music is a rich part of the Raizal heritage and something unique to this part of the Caribbean. Seek out local legend named Willy T. and his fellow group of musicians. Lastly, please make sure you set aside time for the horse races that take place on Saturdays, directly on the beach at Southwest Bay.

Get to know the locals and make every effort you can to DIRECTLY support them in a sustainable and equitable way.

Happy to help with any questions that you might have regarding the island, things to do and how to travel to this unique, authentic Caribbean destination.

PLEASE NOTE:

With our concern for your children's safety, we have a reservation policy as follows....

Unfortunately we cannot accept young children below 5 years of age, unless there is an adult who can take full responsibility and care for the little ones while at the house. We hope you can appreciate that both the owner and staff are committed and concerned about each and everyone's happiness and wellbeing. If you need to have a nanny to help out, please let us know and we can arrange one for you. Additionally we have limited internet service at the house, though is available if you must, at the Deep Blue restaurant just steps away from the house.

A few OTHER things to keep in mind,

You are welcome to plug your mp3 player or phone into the stereo to listen to music around the house. Again please note we do not have internet, so music has to be in your files.

Our personalized concierge service can help you reserve, scooters, atv's ( They look like big fast golf carts ) or even a small car. You can navigate the entire island in under an hour...It's small!

Once you reserve Monasterio, we will e-mail you a very detailed Guest Guide attachment about Providencia and Monasterio del Viento

Location

Car: not necessary

Due to its extremely remote location certain things that we are all accustomed to cannot be provided. Some things like on demand hot water for showers are not practical due to the local price of energy. Energy generation happens locally through burning of diesel fuel, something we do not like to support and is very costly. Our water is solar heated! Again we are accustomed to having internet on demand. This is a problem on the island. The current technology is unreliable. Hence we cannot guarantee that you will have service on the Island. Lastly the pool at the house is operational, though it is not a whirlpool nor Jacuzzi. It also acts up on us once in a while.

AMAZING way to "shut out the world"

  • 5 of 5

We ended our 6 weeks of travel in South America with a weeklong stay at the property. It stole our heart. From the small island, the Caribbean vibe and amazing hosts, it was the perfect place to end our travels. The home is situated on the most beautiful side of the island. Morning sunrises greet you and you can look out across the sea to Crab Key. The rooms were as pictured, if not better. Comfy beds, fluffy towels and so much attention to detail.

The orientation before we arrived was great. Andy and Chris made sure we had plenty of activities to choose from and asked for input on our dietary preferences. But even with that, we were blown away on arrival. Chris went out of her way to welcome us warmly. She jumped through hoops to arrange activities. Rodri and Deanna kept our bellies full. The food was over the top gourmet. Every meal better than the last. Fresh, delicious, local. We will be back!!!

Fantasy lodging in Fantasy Island

  • 5 of 5

Monasterio del Viento is the most beautiful house in Providencia. The attention provided by Cristina, Rodrigo and Gigi is unbeatable. Rodrigo's cooking is deliciously refined. This is our 3rd time to Monasterio del Viento and we hope to make it back every year or two. If you like Scuba Diving, Providencia is a top recreational diving spot with the 3rd largest coral reef in the World. If you are looking for paradise -- you found it!

Dream Honeymoon in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

El Monasterio del Viento is truly the most magical retreat on Providencia Island. An oasis of serenity, local charm, incredible food and family-like hospitality.

We went to Providencia for our honeymoon, knowing very little of the island, and were treated like kings, taken care of every second, and felt like locals by the time we left, all thanks to this charming, personal, and unmatched service.

The house is tucked away in such a way that you are surrounded by water, waking up every morning to the most amazing sunrises and views that we enjoyed daily either from our hammock or from the porch chairs or sweet water pool. There is a ton of activities - from kayaking, to snorkeling, to just relaxing with the best music and books right on the deck, there is no way you will be bored here. The bedrooms are huge, light and airy, and tucked away in such a way that you have private quarters no matter where you stay.

Cristina and Rodrigo were exceptional. They thought of every detail and made sure our stay was truly unforgettable - planning special events for us throughout our stay and spoiling us with the best meals. They both do an incredible job of making sure you are taken care of without intruding - a true sign of hospitality. They are filled with knowledge about the island and able to show us a behind-the-scenes look into the wonderful place.

When it comes to the food, it is hands down the best you will find on the island. We ventured to many places, but were consistently craving Rodrigo's cooking (lobster skewers with sundried tomatoes and squid ink pasta, and his coconut pie - all to die for). Gigi was also incredible hospitable and makes the best hot sauce we've ever had.

The house is clean, bright, friendly, and felt like a home away from home. It was the best way to relax after our wedding, and we know plan to visit on big anniversaries.

My only worry is that too many people will go now and we will not be able to book again! It is a true hidden gem in Colombia.

Unspoiled Island

  • 5 of 5

I finally had a moment to contact you and thank you for the wonderful accommodations you provided to us at Monasterio Del Viento. The entire staff was equally responsible for our fantastic trip and the amazing moments we all shared. Rodri and Christina are two of the most incredible hosts we have ever stayed with! They are totally committed and very passionate about what they do and have the greatest personalities along with incredible talents in the kitchen and around the house. The food was over the top in selection, quality and presentation. Most importantly, every meal served was flawless. It even inspired my wife to take a cooking class with them which she really enjoyed. We all returned home to tell a different story regarding something special about our trip. We brought back wonderful hot sauce made by GiGi and still think of her kind demeanor. I never even locked my safe as I felt so comfortable staying at your house. Java found my belt which I actually thought I had left in San Andres. I have zero complaints and completely agree with the lack of wifi in the house as it forced some of our friends to relax and enjoy what we had around us. I also came out a hero for finding your hidden gem in Isla Providencia

Un paraíso.

  • 5 of 5
