LIVING ON A HOUSEBOAT

Experience a unique way of life, the freedom of your own apartment, privacy and independence, the typical Amsterdam charm of living on the water. Fall asleep at night to the gentle rocking of the boat, wake up the next morning to the sound of ducks and swans swimming past.

The boat is perfectly located on a small canal right between the old city centre and trendy neighbourhood ‘De Pijp’ in Amsterdam. Just around the corner from the boat is the river Amstel, the river the city took its name from.

THE BOAT

Recently the houseboat was completely renovated and modernised. It measures a total of 70 m2, has an elegant modern design, luxurious with some antique touches. It has large windows all around, it is a very bright place, like a bungalow on the water. It has a spacious living room with a fully fitted kitchen, two double bedrooms with queen sized (box spring) beds and a private sink/shower each. And maybe best of all, right on the water there’s a nice outside terrace from which to enjoy the ships passing by or watch the sunset over the water. The boat is ideally located for sunshine all day long, from a balcony breakfast to a sunset dinner.

FACILITIES

Modern kitchen with fridge/freezer, oven/microwave, dishwasher, toaster, coffee machine. Central heating in all rooms. Flatscreen TV, DVD player, soundsystem, wifi/highspeed internet. Two Bathrooms with private shower/sink, hairdryer. Separate toilet. Safety deposit box. Washing machine and dryer. Towels and linen (Egyptian cotton) provided.

LOCATION

This boat is located on the edge of the canal ring area, the 17th century historical center of Amsterdam (UNESCO World Heritage Listing). This is the area into which you can endlessly wander, discovering historical gabled houses and beautiful hidden courtyards. Cutting all the way through the canal ring is the Utrechtsestraat, a cozy and classy shopping street with great boutiques and a number of excellent bars and restaurants.

To the south the boat edges on ‘De Pijp’, formerly a 19th century working class area but with a recent influx of students and artists this area is often nicknamed the Dutch Quartier Latin with endless shopping, numerous bars and dozens of great restaurants. Cutting right through this area is the Albert Cuyp Market, Amsterdam’s largest open-air food market.

Public transportation is just a few steps away and takes you in a few minutes to the Museum area (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum) or across all canals all the way to Central Station.

What makes this house boat unique

Living on the water is probably the best way of spending your holiday in Amsterdam. Spend the evenings on the terrace, enjoy the swans and ducks in the morning. In short: live like a local in Amsterdam!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Absolutely fabulous stay

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of four (two dads and two children ages 14 and 11) who just completed a week on the houseboat. It was wonderful. The home had everything we needed and is in a great location; it is close to downtown without being right in the middle of the overly-touristy area. The boat was well-equipped and we lacked nothing. By far, my highlight was sitting on the deck having wine or coffee watching the near constant flow of boats down the canal. It was as though Amsterdam was parading past us. The only minor downside was the noise on weekend nights--the boats go all night long. However, if you are a light sleeper, earplugs would take care of that. Lots of options for groceries, dining, and renting bikes nearby. All in all, I could not have asked for a better home for the week. I don't think I'll be able to go back to an apartment on dry land again. Thank you for a wonderful week. We WILL be back.

Our houseboat stay July 2018

  • 3 of 5

Lovely houseboat for 2 couples but very busy/noisy but close to lots of amenities and transit. For us personally, we would look for a quieter location.

Fabulous stay in our canal houseboat!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay on the houseboat was everything we had hoped for, and more. The houseboat, itself, has everything you can possibly need. It's clean, very modern, and we loved the decor. We spent hours in the mornings and evenings enjoying the deck overlooking the water. It was so quiet and peaceful, yet everything you could possibly want was close.

Restaurants, grocery stores are within a couple blocks. We walked everywhere, even though public transportation is right nearby. Carolien was so helpful, and we appreciated everything she did to make it special. I can't say enough positives about staying here, and we would definitely stay here again when we return to Amsterdam!

A holiday rental with a difference!

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a wonderful week on this well equipped houseboat. It is centrally situated, convenient for the tram system, museums and supermarkets, which was helpful, as we are both in our seventies.

We were met by Carolien who showed us round, explaining all the equipment. She gave us a map, pointing out the main places of interest and we had her phone number in case there were any difficulties.

The weather wasn't perfect, but the houseboat was!

We would recommend it to all family and friends.

Great location for tourists to base themselves while exploring Amsterdam

  • 5 of 5

We were two couples from Canada spending six days in Amsterdam and were so pleased to have booked this houseboat for the duration of our stay. Located on one of the secondary canals, (expect some boat traffic and wave to the tourists as if you are locals) the unit was nicely furnished and ideal for our purposes. We didn't do any cooking (but it was equipped should we wanted to) but did start each day with coffee and a light breakfast and grocery stores were nice and close. Then, using our I-Amsterdam card...off to the nearby trams/busses for touring. The central Amsterdam area is also within walking distance and you pass numerous shops and restaurants along the way. The choice of restaurants is incredible.

The houseboat had two reasonably sized bedrooms...each with a cupboard and en-suite sink and shower. Space is somewhat tight (especially since both couples had large suitcases from the 2 week cruise we had just completed) but we made it work. There was a shared toilet. The kitchen was well equipped and functional and there was a sitting area that was quite roomy. The outdoor deck was small but nice to sit on for an afternoon glass of wine. There was also a washer/dryer but we didn't use it.

Our contact for the houseboat was Carolien and she was a wealth of information about shopping, restaurants, transit and warned us about always being watchful for bicycles. She carefully reviewed all of the operating details about the houseboat so we felt very much at home. Upon our departure, Carolien kindly arranged for a taxi to the airport and followed up with text messages as to the arrival status of the cab.

We would certainly recommend this houseboat to couples or families seeking a great place to stay while exploring Amsterdam.

Spacious. Well located. Fully equipped. Comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed the houseboat, especially the outdoor space which gave us nonstop entertainment of boats passing by. Overall, it was exactly as promised!
