Wonderful, tranquil, and unique home.

  • 5 of 5

This lakefront property was lovely. The view out the open front windows was spectacular. The home itself was extremely comfortable, tasteful, and welcoming in its japanese style. We greatly enjoyed out tranquil weekend here with the fall colors.

Lovely quaint cottage right on the lake

  • 5 of 5

The stone turtle house is beautiful. The Japanese design is truly lovely. And the location is fantastic. The only thing I would say is the space is small– my 6 foot tall husband and son bumped their heads a couple of times… this is a wonderful place to stay for a family or small group who are comfortable sleeping on futons.

Nice and quiet with interesting interior.

  • 4 of 5

To make a long story short... I would definitely rent this place again. Although I would recommend looking into traditional Japanese sleeping arrangements as they might not be for everyone.

Japanese inspired lakeside charmer

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a lovely retreat destination you have found it here. Whether you are out on the lake in the canoe or kayak, swimming, or just relaxing by the campfire, you will enjoy the tranquil setting of the Stone Turtle house. Plus there's a nice collection of books to peruse. The Japanese inspired decor is comfortable and quaint. We look forward to returning again.

Charming Japanese Cabin

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was very unique, and we enjoyed taking in all of the Japanese elements. It is also perfectly situated on the lakeshore, and we really enjoyed the firepit. The lake was bit noisy, though (lots of jet skis and motor boats zooming by), which lessened the zen factor just a tad. And the firmness of the futons might not work for everyone's back.

On a positive note, April was delightful, responded very promptly, and was extremely helpful in preparing us for our stay! Oh..and the other reviews are right - all of the neighbors ARE very friendly, which was nice!

Relaxing spot - private with friendly neighbors

  • 5 of 5

The small lake - huntress pond - is lovely for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and swimming. We watched osprey and kingfishers fish, and had beavers visit our dock several evenings in a row...both very cool! The property offers privacy but the neighbors are all friendly and welcoming if you choose to interact. The cabin is small and charming and comfortable but remember it is Japanese style so there are no beds - only futons on tatame mat floors, so maybe bring an infalable mattress if you can't do *hard*. We were only two people so we put the extra futons one on top of another and found that to be ok...but the first couple nights before that were an adjustment to be sure. We caught bass (large and small mouth), perch, and lots of sunfish right off the dock with just worms. Having a fire in the firepit outside every evening was cozy and wonderful (you can buy wood at the Hannaford in Alton or at roadside stands) and we used the hibachi from the shed to do most of our dinners outside - but there is a gas stove/oven in the kitchen that works well. If you need dark strong coffee like we do, maybe bring your own brewer - We brought a French press and boiled water on the stove - there is a MrCoffee machine and we did try it but it just couldn't make a strong enough cup. If you are ok with normal coffee, it will be fine though I think. Emails to the owner/caretaker were all answered promptly and all questions were answered fully. There is not a lot around Barnstead to do or see - this is more of a sleepy quiet retreat kind of place. We did do one day trip into Manchester to see the art museum and tour the Frank Lloyd Wright house, which were both great and worth doing if you enjoy such things. Bring some books or read one of the many at the cabin! You will enjoy the peace and quiet if that's what you need. We certainly did. :)

Owner's Response: I am very pleased that you enjoyed the house on Huntress Pond. I'm with you on the strong coffee but since coffee brewing is an individual pursuit it is best, as you recommend, people bring their own brewing devices. Sleeping on futons may seem hard to some but in the more than 20 years I have used one in Tokyo I have never suffered from a backache. Anyway it is a camp! As for entertainment and activities, heading north along Lake Winnepisaukee there are many attractions. Locally there are dozens of blueberry picking spots (ask the neighbors down the road) and short hikes up very doable smallmountains. To the east is the sea reachable by lovely back country roads leading to Portsmouth and Maine. And then there is the pond which offers natural visitors especially during the week days and friendly human activity by weekend. My favorite thing to do, borrowed from Japan, is to host small gatherings to honor the rising full moon every July, August and September. The moon rising explains the curve in the dock. Welcom back anytime! JP. Chretien (owner) Tokyo
