Stonecastle is a private, exclusive, 12 acre forested estate overlooking the very heart of grand lake and nestled in the foothills of the Ozark mountains. The waterfront estate covers an entire peninsula with over 2000 feet of shore line and features two nearly private coves for your peaceful enjoyment. A haven for fishermen and nature lovers, this placid setting is home to a variety of wildlife including bald eagles, heron, pelican, deer, fox, bobcat, raccoon, armadillo and many other wonderful creatures.
Stonecastle itself is centered atop the peninsula and is built around four 40 foot stone towers offering an unprecedented view of the lake. Enjoy the tranquil setting from inside the castle or from either of its two very large decks. The 4000 square foot castle is built on three floors with a spectacular lookout located on the 4th level inside one of the towers.
Approaching through the wrought iron and stone gate foretells the simple yet comfortable luxury awaiting you. Stonecastle estate might remind you of an ancient castle in Europe, but this one is full of modern comfort! From the main floor, experience a panoramic view of the lake and woods, oak floors throughout and a great room with stone fireplace.
Enjoy a spectacular view each morning from the master bedroom, relax in the grand sized soaking tub or wash away your cares in the separate glass shower. Prepare gourmet meals in a fully stocked kitchen, then serve your family and friends on the 12’ granite island for casual dining, or in the adjacent dining room that easily seats 10. Open the sliding glass wall to the attached sun room to seat additional guests, or just to rock away the day reading, working a puzzle or engaged in a fierce battle of bridge! Walk onto the main deck from the living area, the master bedroom or the sun room and wile away the hours bird watching or lounging in sun or shade. Clear nights on the deck treat you to a fabulous array of stars you can never get in the city!
Upstairs, let your imagination carry you away in one of three themed bedrooms, all with queen beds. Open the ancient looking door in each bedroom, and find yourself in a roomy closet designed to make your stay more comfortable. In the shared bath, relax with a dual head shower and appreciate the unusual natural marble counter.
Fairies enchant the first room and will surely grant you sweet dreams. Slip into the hand carved mahogany queen bed and float away to pleasant places from your childhood reveries. See if you can find the hidden mirror. It is said that everyone who looks in this mirror looks upon beauty.
In the Oklahoma bunk room, snuggle into one of the two queen beds, wrap yourself in a down comforter and lay your head, not on a saddle, but on a lovely, soft pillow. When you wake, you may even find yourself humming “Oh what a beautiful morning!”
Next is the prince’s bedroom with secret access to the castle keep. Only the most agile of knights and bravest of ladies will climb the hidden ladder and be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the lake. On winter afternoons, this perch is eye level to bald eagles who are hunting!.
In summer, feel the coolness as you descend to the lower level game-room. Enjoy a game on the regulation size pool table, air hockey, or perhaps just a cozy nap on one of the couches. Maybe a movie on the large screen TV suits you, or perhaps you prefer to indulge yourself in the large steam room. Walk out to the cool lower deck and sip lemonade or swing gently in the hammock chairs.
A short walk from the castle brings you to the summer house, right at waters edge. In its shelter, nap in a hammock or picnic in style with a sink, refrigerator and gas grill at you fingertips. Play Huckleberry Finn and jump off the private dock into the secluded, deep water cove for a refreshing swim or sit and fish to your hearts content. For the more adventurous, boating, water skiing, jet skis or even para-sailing are available nearby. Locally, you can go horseback riding or visit one of the many interesting galleries or antique stores just a 15 minute drive into town.
Spend the day exploring along paved roads on the grounds or revive the art of conversation while you relax on the front terrace swing. Mint juleps anyone?
This respite is available all year around and with the four beautiful seasons of Oklahoma’s Green Country, anytime is a great time to visit!
My husband and I have traveled all over, but we still think this is one of the best places on earth.
Stonecastle was designed as our personal home but is just too glorious not to share!
Ellen Harris purchased this estate in 1999
This property is the perfect place for a family gathering, small group retreat, or paparazzi escape. We chose this location for the solitude, natural landscape, and beautiful lake views. If you want a great lake vacation but don't want to share it with half the world, this is definitely the right place. It was designed as a family home that would be elegant and yet comfortable. A place where we could escape the city and create an atmosphere of relaxation and respite.
With 12 private acres and a whole peninsula of waterfront, you have the whole estate to yourself and neighbors are a nice distance away. From the secret tower you can see for miles up the lake. Morning coffee on the porch, lunch on the grill at the summer house, drifting aimlessly on a raft in the cove and dinner together at the table before watching fireflies from the deck are just a few of the lovely moments to be had. Board games, a movie downstairs or a game of pool or air hockey before bedtime anyone? Tomorrow, how about a nap in the hammock or a good read in the cool of the lower deck's comfy hammock swings? Maybe you'll decide to stretch a bit with a walk around the 12 acres. It's all yours to enjoy. Birds, foxes, raccoons, deer and who-knows-what surprise might be waiting!
We had family members from Oklahoma City, Edmond, OK and San Diego, CA travel here for a good, old-fashioned lake weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! The house has all the amenities you need for a family reunion at the lake. We love everything about the house...great kitchen, beds, and big screen TV for watching the Olympics.
The only challenge was getting to the boat rental at Shangdi-La, 45 minute drive, but we should have rented boats at Serenity Point which is only 5 minutes away. Now we know!
Thank you Ellen!
Stayed for an extended weekend for the second straight summer and cannot ask for a better getaway. A beautiful property, wonderfully maintained, that can accommodate our family (three couples and six children) and give us access to everything Grand Lake has to offer. We intend to return every summer.
Lovely home. We had a wonderful time and everything you could possibly need is furnished.
Stonecastle is a beautiful home in a beautiful setting. We were surprised by all the amenities and by the welcome from the caretaker. Views of the lake from the great room and the deck were awesome and the cove was a short ride the "mule" away. We will be back!
We rented the house to host a small wedding (approximately 50 guests). The ceremony was held on the upper level of the balcony and easily held the 30 guests in attendance for the ceremony and the additional 20 for the reception. The background was picture perfect and we received endless compliments about how beautiful the home and view were. The kitchen and inside of the house were large enough to host people throughout the day during preparations and to prepare the food that was served. Everything we needed was available at the house (including the coffee which we forgot to pack!). The owners were incredibly responsive and helpful throughout the planning process and someone was available to meet us and show us around on arrival. I highly recommend renting this home!
Ours is a destination location. Our guests come here to experience a level of privacy and quietude not generally available in a resort setting.
