Built in 1878 and once owned by one of the most powerful families on the island, this beautiful traditional two storey Santorini mansion is located in the heart of the picturesque village of Megalochori. Every aspect of this mansion is unique with heaps of character. Mansion 1878 consists of two spacious self-contained units with a private pool. From the village square, a small winding road leads to the mansion and into the large cobbled private courtyard, complete with pool and surrounded by potted shrubs and trees. A stone stairway leads up to the first floor with large terraces and panoramic views of the village on the horizon. This traditionally styled property sleeps up to 10 and children are welcome.
Outside Mansion 1878 the secluded swimming pool is hard to resist. You can also have the use of an electric barbecue (on request) if youd like to do a bit of outdoor dining. Inside the property there are lots of modern amenities including satellite TV, DVD player and iPod docking station.
The original structure has been sensitively renovated. Restored to its original splendor, retaining the original layout and features, the gracious proportions and weathered building materials tell a real story and create the charm of this property. The well-equipped traditional-style central kitchen leads into the beautifully lit dining room, perfect for leisurely meals with friends and family. Arched doorways on either side of the kitchen allows for an easy flow through the house.
The spacious master bedroom is comfortable, bright and airy. A staircase leads to a private landing and second large double bedroom. An attractive bathroom with wood and stone features services both rooms. On the opposite end of the canava is a spacious sleeping area which allows for two double bedrooms with a shared seating and dressing area. The shared extravagant bathroom has a large shower, seating area and large vanity. A few steps away from the attractive pool you will find a separate spacious double room with en-suite shower room.
The village, shops and Megalochori Port are all within a short stroll of the property. The nearest beach is at Perivolos 5km away but is worth making the trip if you have transport. Mansion 1878 is only 12km from the airport so you wont have to wait long after touching down before youre transported to a traditional Greek haven.

Additional Information
At the turn of the century, the first floor would have been occupied by the family with the ground floor serving as the winery and cellar. The Vinsanto dessert wine produced was exported to Russia, where it was used by the Russian Orthodox Church for Holy Communion. Unfortunately, this all came to an end with the Russian Revolution which had a big impact on the wealth of families in this once flourishing village.
The original structure has been sensitively renovated. Restored to its original splendor, retaining the original layout and traditional features, the gracious proportions and weathered building materials speak for themselves.
The ground floor once served as the 'canava' - wine cellar and workshop - of the Mansion. The cylindrical troughs sunk into the ground, once used for distilling the vinsanto, provides unusual lighting features to the interior. Three large barn-style doors lead from the cobbled courtyard into the various living areas. The smooth-edged carved interior provides a cool and relaxing haven during the hot summer days. The well equipped traditional-style central kitchen leads into the beautifully lit dining room, perfect for leisurely meals with friends and family. Arched doorways on either side of the kitchen allows for an easy flow through the house.

Accommodation was well located (halfway between the beaches of Perissa and Fira and allowed us to access everything the island had to offer. It was very well serviced by transport options whether they be the local bus service, hire cars or hire bicycles. We certainly experienced all the island had to offer and this included cycling the Southern half of the island (via bike trails - although I am sure many thought we were crazy cycling up the hills), the beaches at Perissa, Perivolos, Kumari and Eros, walking the clifftop walk between Fira and Oia, sunset boat cruise, a wine experience tour and many trips to Fira to shop, watch the sunset, walk the steps and descend the cable car. Mansion 1878 also allowed us our own little sanctuary where we could escape to laze by the pool in the late afternoon to recharge before dinner and night time revelry.
We stayed at Mansion 1878 4 nights and our stay was very pleasant. We were picked up from the port and driven to our villa . Kosta, our concierge was very attentive and kind. The villa was in a quiet village and conveniently located close to a bus station.
Transportation from villa to airport was very nice too. Overall we are pleased with our stay in Santorini.
