Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Wake - Where the Heck is Wake, VA?

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4

This whimsical, artsy cottage is in Wake--a tiny hamlet snugged up to the Rappahannock River and biking distance (about 6 miles) to the quaint sailing town of Deltaville, VA. It is small and simple, away from noisy distractions, with a front porch for wine sipping and counting lightning bugs, and a three-season screened porch for breakfast, scrabble, reading, talking, sleeping (full-size futon) or enjoying the drama of a summer thunderstorm. The Cottage of Content (named after a British pub dating to 1485 in Carey, England fondly remembered by one of the owners during his military career) overlooks a sweeping hayfield frequented by Canada geese, wild turkeys and deer. If you're lucky, you'll be there on a day they're cutting hay. Truly, nothing smells better.

Starry, dark nights are best enjoyed with open windows to hear the owls, the occasional whippoorwills and crickets. A half-mile walk past woods and open fields ends at the small public beach on the Rappahannock River. Don't forget to bring your bikes, kayaks and running shoes as our quiet, rural roads and waterways await. For boaters, a large public boat ramp is approximately two miles away (kayak put-in is easy from either the beach or boat launch), and the much-acclaimed Merroir Tasting Room on Locklies Creek is 6 miles away (also accessible via kayak, boat or bike). There is a 2-person kayak at the cottage that you are welcome to use. There are several local farmer's markets from May through the fall on rotating weekends (Irvington, my favorite; Urbanna and Deltaville), along with a local farm stand (Merryvale Farms) and an excellent seafood retailer (J&W Seafood) in Deltaville.

This is a great little spot if you have business in Deltaville or surrounding counties, or just need a quiet getaway for a few days. It's not for partiers, but it is for readers and cuddlers, porch sitters, nature lovers and wine sippers (did I mention that already?)--and I would be remiss if I didn't tell you about the wonderful wineries waiting to be discovered, from Good Luck Cellars (our favorite) in Kilmarnock and the Dog and Oyster in Irvington to farther up the Northern Neck where you'll find Athena, Hague, General's Ridge, Jacey and Belle Mount. Lots of great places to eat as well.

Golfer? There are three excellent 18-hole golf courses within minutes: The renowned Golden Eagle at the Tides Inn, King Carter in Kilmarnock, and the Piankatank River course in Hartfield (just a few miles from the cottage). The location is also very convenient to the Northern Neck, Urbanna, and the counties of Mathews and Gloucester. It is also an easy drive to Williamsburg or Jamestown, as many of our guests have pointed out. It's a perfect spot for a couple, though it is large enough to accommodate up to four people. We hope you'll be our guest, and that you'll enjoy the Cottage of Content as we do. We'll leave a bottle of wine on the table for you!

Good Stuff to Know:

About Property Manager/Owner

Bucky and Terri Burruss live in nearby Gloucester County on Heywood's Creek with their two standard poodles and three lazy cats. He's retired from a distinguished career in special forces and is a painter and writer; Terri works in the defense contracting industry as a proposal writer and security specialist. The cottage was Terri's primary residence before she and Bucky married in 2013.

Property Manager/Owner purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Property Manager/Owner chose Virginia

The Cottage of Content began life more than 100 years ago. Over time, it was abandoned and became derelict. In the mid-2000s a local contractor recognized its potential and rebuilt it. Terri bought it in 2011 and she and Bucky have poured their hearts into creating a peaceful, artful retreat that they no longer live in full time, but wish to share with others. Though the cottage offers privacy, there are neighbors who are quiet, respectful and just very nice folks. While visiting, we just ask that you are the same.

What makes this cottage unique

Great spot for sailors/boaters who need a place to stay while having work done on boats in D'ville, or for folks who'd rather be in a homier setting than a hotel (there really aren't that many around). Walking distance to small beach, great area for walking/running/biking/kayaking (Deltaville offers kayak rentals). Good location if you're attending the Urbanna Oyster Festival.

Wonder-filled Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The Cottage of Content is well-named and better than advertised! We agree with every glowing review here. The cottage is peaceful, quiet, relaxing, cozy and close to nature. It's decorated with fun and eclectic art and antiques and is very well-equipped and maintained. Terri and Bucky are easy to communicate with and very accommodating. In fact, they went so far as to write a personal note welcoming us to their cottage along with a bottle of excellent local wine. This gesture is rarely seen these days and made us feel like old friends.

My wife and I stayed a week with our dog and fell in love with the quaint nearby towns, beaches and excellent food. We especially loved relaxing and reading several of the cottage's books in the screened-in porch and from which our dog Vela absolutely loved watching the area wildlife (deer, rabbits, squirrels and many birds). Luckily we escaped the wrath of Hurricane Matthew and snuggled in the comfy bed every night, falling peacefully asleep to the hoo-hoo-hooting of several Great Horned owls in the bordering woods.

We've been VRBOers for over 15 years and of the 20 or more places we've stayed in that time, none compares as well as the Cottage of Content for its cozy comfort, cleanliness, conveniences, quiet countryside, friendly residents and area attractions and restaurants. We fell in love with Mathews, Deltaville and Urbanna and highly recommend an outdoor lunch at Merroirs Tasting Room on Locklies Creek!

The cottage exceeded our expectations, the weather was excellent and each day of our stay was better than the next! Vela loved the beach on Mill Wharf Road and didn't want to leave at the end of the week--which is saying something since she loves travelling!

Thanks Terri and Bucky for a wonderful stay at your wonder-filled retreat. It's truly something special!

Owner's Response: I've probably said this a time or two in our "owner responses," but it bears repeating. When we receive a review like this one, it is so gratifying. So worth the hard work that goes into making a traveler's experience comfortable, fun, peaceful and memorable. I'm so pleased to know how much you enjoyed your stay at the cottage! You discovered and enjoyed all the things that we also love about the area...I'm really impressed that you explored Mathews County--what a gem. We love the thrift stores and restaurants, and you could not go wrong with Richardson's. If you find yourself back this way, try Southwind next time, or for a great dinner, The White Dog. You sure got a great stretch of weather! Last but in no way least, THANK YOU for being three (yes, your dog counts!) of the most considerate, tidy guests we've ever hosted. It was a real pleasure. Thanks again for the very kind review! All the best to you, Bucky and Terri

Comfortable and adorable

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this lovely home for a weekend while traveling in town for a wedding. My family and I were completely at home here, the space was large and gave us tons of room to move around. My children enjoyed surveying the yard and area, with no worries about cars flying by the road. My children could be kids, no worrying about hotel noise traveling, no worries about running or even dancing. They enjoyed themselves. Traveling with kids is never easy, but staying here made things easy. We will never stay in a hotel again. Thank you again for letting us stay at this lovely home!

Owner's Response: What a lovely review! I am imagining your kids enjoying running around the yard and dancing. :) I hope you all had a chance to see the sun come up on the front porch or stargaze a little. I would like to thank you for leaving our home in sparkling condition--I greatly appreciate that. I hope if you are ever back in our part of the world you'll stay with us again, and dance a little more! Take care, and have a beautiful autumn. Best-- Terri and Bucky

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind comments. You were a lot of fun to correspond with, and I enjoyed putting together some recommendations for good seafood. I was delighted to know that Urbanna Seafood was your favorite--it's such a neat place! Thanks for leaving things in mint condition, and we hope to see you back again soon! Terri and Bucky

Very Content at the Cottage of Content

  • 5 of 5

My husband, his 7 year old son and our dog just returned to the city from spending 3 nights at the cottage of content. It was a wonderful trip. The cottage is even nicer in person. beautifully decorated and very clean and well-stocked (and there was a welcome bottle of wine and snacks!) We enjoyed the quiet, the beautiful views, the beach at the end of the road and the stars. We fished, swam, kayaked, played badminton and Frisbee and grilled rockfish. A great get-away back to nature in a new part of the world for us. We hope to return!

Owner's Response: Hi Dawn! I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. And I'm happy to report that I did find your lost earring...please email me your address and I'll be glad to mail it back to you. It sounds like you took full advantage of all the things to do in our neck of the woods. You even had pretty good weather! (Meaning it was not 110 degrees like it had been!) Enjoy what's left of the summer, and thanks so much for being our guests. :) Terri

A Slice Of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

This has to be one of the most perfect properties we have visited on HomeAway for travellers who need to stop and rest. The Cottage of Content cannot be faulted, it is gorgeous. I have wanted to visit the Chesapeake area for many years (after reading James Michener's amazing book) and finally managed a quick visit. It was almost perfect...however we managed to visit during an intense heatwave but did experience a thunder and lightening show of mammoth proportions to compensate!

I digress! The cottage is supremely comfortable, clean, homely and good fun with eclectic furniture and butterflies and hummingbirds. The grounds are amazing too, it has a lovely porch to sit and watch the day begin with beautiful light and lots of birds! The cottage has everything that short term travellers require.

Terri, the owner was fantastic to communicate with and went to lots of extra trouble to provide us with extras. So, if you are thinking of visiting this area, look no further! There was a beautiful (local) bottle of wine to welcome us which was very much appreciated. The surrounding area is so lovely, it would have been amazing to have been able to stay longer. Terri has compiled a list of places to visit and has lots of information on hand as well.

I actually wasn't ready to leave!

Owner's Response: Hello Karen! What a really lovely review--thank you! I so wish the heat had been less of a force while you were here, but it sounds as if you made the best of it regardless. We do try to anticipate what guests might want or need while visiting...wine is always at the top of my list. :) Thank you SO MUCH for choosing the Cottage of Content on your world travels. It's the highest of compliments--thank you too for leaving it spic and span. And if you're ever back this way from Western Australia, we'd love for you to be our guests again. Hooroo and safe travels!
