This whimsical, artsy cottage is in Wake--a tiny hamlet snugged up to the Rappahannock River and biking distance (about 6 miles) to the quaint sailing town of Deltaville, VA. It is small and simple, away from noisy distractions, with a front porch for wine sipping and counting lightning bugs, and a three-season screened porch for breakfast, scrabble, reading, talking, sleeping (full-size futon) or enjoying the drama of a summer thunderstorm. The Cottage of Content (named after a British pub dating to 1485 in Carey, England fondly remembered by one of the owners during his military career) overlooks a sweeping hayfield frequented by Canada geese, wild turkeys and deer. If you're lucky, you'll be there on a day they're cutting hay. Truly, nothing smells better.
Starry, dark nights are best enjoyed with open windows to hear the owls, the occasional whippoorwills and crickets. A half-mile walk past woods and open fields ends at the small public beach on the Rappahannock River. Don't forget to bring your bikes, kayaks and running shoes as our quiet, rural roads and waterways await. For boaters, a large public boat ramp is approximately two miles away (kayak put-in is easy from either the beach or boat launch), and the much-acclaimed Merroir Tasting Room on Locklies Creek is 6 miles away (also accessible via kayak, boat or bike). There is a 2-person kayak at the cottage that you are welcome to use. There are several local farmer's markets from May through the fall on rotating weekends (Irvington, my favorite; Urbanna and Deltaville), along with a local farm stand (Merryvale Farms) and an excellent seafood retailer (J&W Seafood) in Deltaville.
This is a great little spot if you have business in Deltaville or surrounding counties, or just need a quiet getaway for a few days. It's not for partiers, but it is for readers and cuddlers, porch sitters, nature lovers and wine sippers (did I mention that already?)--and I would be remiss if I didn't tell you about the wonderful wineries waiting to be discovered, from Good Luck Cellars (our favorite) in Kilmarnock and the Dog and Oyster in Irvington to farther up the Northern Neck where you'll find Athena, Hague, General's Ridge, Jacey and Belle Mount. Lots of great places to eat as well.
Golfer? There are three excellent 18-hole golf courses within minutes: The renowned Golden Eagle at the Tides Inn, King Carter in Kilmarnock, and the Piankatank River course in Hartfield (just a few miles from the cottage). The location is also very convenient to the Northern Neck, Urbanna, and the counties of Mathews and Gloucester. It is also an easy drive to Williamsburg or Jamestown, as many of our guests have pointed out. It's a perfect spot for a couple, though it is large enough to accommodate up to four people. We hope you'll be our guest, and that you'll enjoy the Cottage of Content as we do. We'll leave a bottle of wine on the table for you!

Bucky and Terri Burruss live in nearby Gloucester County on Heywood's Creek with their two standard poodles and three lazy cats. He's retired from a distinguished career in special forces and is a painter and writer; Terri works in the defense contracting industry as a proposal writer and security specialist. The cottage was Terri's primary residence before she and Bucky married in 2013.
Property Manager/Owner purchased this cottage in 2011
The Cottage of Content began life more than 100 years ago. Over time, it was abandoned and became derelict. In the mid-2000s a local contractor recognized its potential and rebuilt it. Terri bought it in 2011 and she and Bucky have poured their hearts into creating a peaceful, artful retreat that they no longer live in full time, but wish to share with others. Though the cottage offers privacy, there are neighbors who are quiet, respectful and just very nice folks. While visiting, we just ask that you are the same.
Great spot for sailors/boaters who need a place to stay while having work done on boats in D'ville, or for folks who'd rather be in a homier setting than a hotel (there really aren't that many around). Walking distance to small beach, great area for walking/running/biking/kayaking (Deltaville offers kayak rentals). Good location if you're attending the Urbanna Oyster Festival.
The Cottage of Content is well-named and better than advertised! We agree with every glowing review here. The cottage is peaceful, quiet, relaxing, cozy and close to nature. It's decorated with fun and eclectic art and antiques and is very well-equipped and maintained. Terri and Bucky are easy to communicate with and very accommodating. In fact, they went so far as to write a personal note welcoming us to their cottage along with a bottle of excellent local wine. This gesture is rarely seen these days and made us feel like old friends.
My wife and I stayed a week with our dog and fell in love with the quaint nearby towns, beaches and excellent food. We especially loved relaxing and reading several of the cottage's books in the screened-in porch and from which our dog Vela absolutely loved watching the area wildlife (deer, rabbits, squirrels and many birds). Luckily we escaped the wrath of Hurricane Matthew and snuggled in the comfy bed every night, falling peacefully asleep to the hoo-hoo-hooting of several Great Horned owls in the bordering woods.
We've been VRBOers for over 15 years and of the 20 or more places we've stayed in that time, none compares as well as the Cottage of Content for its cozy comfort, cleanliness, conveniences, quiet countryside, friendly residents and area attractions and restaurants. We fell in love with Mathews, Deltaville and Urbanna and highly recommend an outdoor lunch at Merroirs Tasting Room on Locklies Creek!
The cottage exceeded our expectations, the weather was excellent and each day of our stay was better than the next! Vela loved the beach on Mill Wharf Road and didn't want to leave at the end of the week--which is saying something since she loves travelling!
Thanks Terri and Bucky for a wonderful stay at your wonder-filled retreat. It's truly something special!
We stayed at this lovely home for a weekend while traveling in town for a wedding. My family and I were completely at home here, the space was large and gave us tons of room to move around. My children enjoyed surveying the yard and area, with no worries about cars flying by the road. My children could be kids, no worrying about hotel noise traveling, no worries about running or even dancing. They enjoyed themselves. Traveling with kids is never easy, but staying here made things easy. We will never stay in a hotel again. Thank you again for letting us stay at this lovely home!
What a delightful gem! The Cottage of Content is a peaceful get-away. The personal touches really made it feel like home! Had a great time exploring the local area, but coming "home" every night to relax, reflect and plan activities for the following day!
We loved every minute of our time at this special spot. Clean, quiet, tranquil, tastefully appointed and perfect location for exploring this special region of Virginia.
My husband, his 7 year old son and our dog just returned to the city from spending 3 nights at the cottage of content. It was a wonderful trip. The cottage is even nicer in person. beautifully decorated and very clean and well-stocked (and there was a welcome bottle of wine and snacks!) We enjoyed the quiet, the beautiful views, the beach at the end of the road and the stars. We fished, swam, kayaked, played badminton and Frisbee and grilled rockfish. A great get-away back to nature in a new part of the world for us. We hope to return!
This has to be one of the most perfect properties we have visited on HomeAway for travellers who need to stop and rest. The Cottage of Content cannot be faulted, it is gorgeous. I have wanted to visit the Chesapeake area for many years (after reading James Michener's amazing book) and finally managed a quick visit. It was almost perfect...however we managed to visit during an intense heatwave but did experience a thunder and lightening show of mammoth proportions to compensate!
I digress! The cottage is supremely comfortable, clean, homely and good fun with eclectic furniture and butterflies and hummingbirds. The grounds are amazing too, it has a lovely porch to sit and watch the day begin with beautiful light and lots of birds! The cottage has everything that short term travellers require.
Terri, the owner was fantastic to communicate with and went to lots of extra trouble to provide us with extras. So, if you are thinking of visiting this area, look no further! There was a beautiful (local) bottle of wine to welcome us which was very much appreciated. The surrounding area is so lovely, it would have been amazing to have been able to stay longer. Terri has compiled a list of places to visit and has lots of information on hand as well.
I actually wasn't ready to leave!
