About Barbara MacLauchlin

Sharing The Whale's Tale with vacationers, like yourselves, who desire to spend uninterrupted time with their families, enjoying one of the best beaches in the world, has been and continues to be an enjoyable blessing. My husband and I first discovered this area in 1974. After driving miles on the wide and undeveloped beaches from Virginia, the jeep stopped at a place called Whalehead of Corolla. My husband, the realtor Mr. Riggs and I stood in the sand looking for the half-acre lot for sale in the 1st division of Whalehead. Not a house in site and little vegetation.

Mr. Riggs squinted and with a turned upper lip said "I don't know exactly, but the lot you are interested in is someplace here." The truth was, we had no extra money to spend on such a wild financial adventure....we were just looking. But what a paradise to behold. The ocean was a 3 minute walk. The Corolla Lighthouse was a historic beauty to behold. On the top ridge of a dune we watched a wild black stallion called Star confidently lead his herd, descendants of a Spanish galleon ship that sunk in the Atlantic centuries ago. Within a second my husband and I said, "We'll take it."

Barbara MacLauchlin purchased this house in 1974

Why Barbara MacLauchlin chose Whalehead Beach

Ten years later, our little family gathered around our dinner table for a vote. Do we build a forever house or do we build a beach house? "A forever house" I said loudly. My husband and Christopher, our teenage son, voted beach house. Our three year old son, Cory, broke the silence. "Sawee Mommy, I vote beach house!" And so we began a journey, not only building a vacation home, but building lifelong memories with family and friends.

Many changes have occurred in Whalehead since 1974. Roads, new homes and parking lots were built. Convenient shopping and fine restaurants were added to the only general store that served this sleepy fishing village. The Whalehead Club has been historically renovated to its former glory. You can still visit the horses in a sanctuary north of Corolla. And the once coarse, pebbly beach has turned into a beautiful white sandy beach. Beach walkways offer easy access and protect the ocean dunes. Lifeguards, emergency services and many conveniences. But it still retains the quality of a quiet paradise where the sun shines a little brighter and air is cooled by sea mist.

What makes this house unique

My husband and I always believed vacations were a necessity for good family health. It is my desire to maintain a clean and comfortable beach house that welcomes you as your summer home. I want you to enjoy this well-earned time with your family. I have stocked the kitchen with lots of extras to make your vacation a pleasure to prepare your family meals. Beds are made and double sets of towels for each family member are provided. The simplicity of playing on the beach together, playing board games, working puzzles, participating in a game of ping pong with your children are truly enjoyed.

My sons now have sons of their own. My five grandchildren often tell me how much they love The Whale's Tale...and want to visit again. To be sure, you and your family will love spending your vacation at The Whale's Tale.

Very comfortable, clean, and easy

  • 4 of 5

Our family group of 4 adults and 1 small dog stayed during an unseasonable cold spell & and so spent much of our time indoors. When we first pulled up, we all thought "uh oh!" because the home is old and unattractive from the outside. However, we had a very comfortable stay and all agreed the house was a pleasant surprise! Very clean, not a single hint of musty smell, well stocked kitchen with mostly newish appliances, some rooms have been redone, heating worked well (!), there's a fun & indulgent heavy duty massage chair in the living rm area, hot tub was clean and good temp, master bedroom mattress was VERY comfy, towels fairly thick and soft. Spent a lot of time in the main living area which was great with all the windows, lg screen tv, comfortable furniture, easy layout with large dining table to use laptops, etc. Bikes are old and basic but do the job. We appreciated a mini fridge full of water bottles when we arrived, although the tap water taste was not objectionable. Barbara was a pleasure to communicate with, in touch but not obtrusive. NOTE: despite "sleeping 10" there are only 2 full bathrooms and 1 half bath--was fine for our group of 4, though. As reference, we have stayed (in the summer, with larger groups) in many newer, larger, and fancier homes in Whalehead, Duck, & Pine Island, but this one fit for the bill for our small group, short winter stay, allows dogs. Would stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you Julie for your four star review. It was a delight reading what specifics made your family vacation comfortable, restful, convenient and fun. A December cold snap it was but you and your family remained resilient....quote "We are in the hot tub a lot". Our modest beach home was built in 1984. We were one of just a few on Whalehead Beach. To combat daily winds that carry salt spray and sand, we chose tough materials (cedar shakes, cedar wood) for the exterior siding and decks. Juniper was selected for the interior to deter insects. We did not enclose the ground level to prevent storm/water damage, mold and that awful cottage musty smell. The elements are harsh on the Outer Banks and beach home owners are continuously maintaining, repairing and replacing exterior materials, heating and cooling, doors, light fixtures etc. etc. Like many beach home owners a yearly investment is budgeted and I am happy to convey The Whale's Tale is scheduled for a new upper deck, new north siding, exterior door and trim. It is said owning a beach house is one of the most expensive hobbies one could have. It is also the most fun! I am truly blessed and enjoy sharing The Whale's Tale with guests like you Julie and your family. It is heart warming to know you would want to stay at The Whale's Tale again.

GREAT Beach Home - Terrific Property Owner!

  • 5 of 5

Loved this beach home and all of the amenities supplied by Barbara! She really takes amazing care of her guests. She truly wants you to just show up and have a relaxing vacation. The mattress in the master bedroom was more comfortable than my bed at home and the linens are top quality! We cannot thank Barbara enough for her wonderful home, kindness and generosity. Rent this property! I almost left my husband for the amazing massage chair! You would not believe all of the attention to detail and the amount of towels supplied. Short walk to the beach. Great vacation, will definitely rent from Barbara again.

Great location. Well appointed kitchen. Good beach and recreation supplies. Kind owners

  • 4 of 5

We had a great family vacation at the Whale's Tail. The quick easy walk to the beach was great. It allowed people in our group to come and go as they pleased and the coded entry front door was great. No keys to juggle or worry about at the beach. The hot tub was well maintained and a fun addition to the evenings. A game of corn hole after dinner was fun. The bikes were enjoyed by young and old, thanks to the straight, flat quiet streets of the neighborhood. We enjoyed cooking in the well stocked kitchen with groceries from two nearby foid stores. The large pot is perfect for a fish boil or lobster. The beds were comfortable and the updated bathrooms were great. Thank you for sharing your house with us. We made many great memories.

Beautiful home! Nice remodeling in bathrooms and bedrooms! Loved beach decor throughout.

  • 4 of 5

Outside of property could use some tlc; however, home itself was perfect for our family vacation! We would love to come back in the future. Inside of home had character and had a nice beachy feel. Remodeling in bathrooms and bedrooms was beautiful. Location was perfect! Close to beach, shopping, activities... My family rode bikes, supplied by the owner which was a plus, to get ice cream and also visit the historic park at sunset which was absolutely gorgeous! The owner was very informative and friendly and just a call away if we needed anything. So much was supplied with this rental that you don't find in others. Was great not to have to bring our bikes, linens, beach toys, etc.. Saved much needed room in our vehicle. I highly recommend this home. Was a great experience for my family and I. Thank you Barbara for a great vacation!
