Sharing The Whale's Tale with vacationers, like yourselves, who desire to spend uninterrupted time with their families, enjoying one of the best beaches in the world, has been and continues to be an enjoyable blessing. My husband and I first discovered this area in 1974. After driving miles on the wide and undeveloped beaches from Virginia, the jeep stopped at a place called Whalehead of Corolla. My husband, the realtor Mr. Riggs and I stood in the sand looking for the half-acre lot for sale in the 1st division of Whalehead. Not a house in site and little vegetation.
Mr. Riggs squinted and with a turned upper lip said "I don't know exactly, but the lot you are interested in is someplace here." The truth was, we had no extra money to spend on such a wild financial adventure....we were just looking. But what a paradise to behold. The ocean was a 3 minute walk. The Corolla Lighthouse was a historic beauty to behold. On the top ridge of a dune we watched a wild black stallion called Star confidently lead his herd, descendants of a Spanish galleon ship that sunk in the Atlantic centuries ago. Within a second my husband and I said, "We'll take it."
Barbara MacLauchlin purchased this house in 1974
Ten years later, our little family gathered around our dinner table for a vote. Do we build a forever house or do we build a beach house? "A forever house" I said loudly. My husband and Christopher, our teenage son, voted beach house. Our three year old son, Cory, broke the silence. "Sawee Mommy, I vote beach house!" And so we began a journey, not only building a vacation home, but building lifelong memories with family and friends.
Many changes have occurred in Whalehead since 1974. Roads, new homes and parking lots were built. Convenient shopping and fine restaurants were added to the only general store that served this sleepy fishing village. The Whalehead Club has been historically renovated to its former glory. You can still visit the horses in a sanctuary north of Corolla. And the once coarse, pebbly beach has turned into a beautiful white sandy beach. Beach walkways offer easy access and protect the ocean dunes. Lifeguards, emergency services and many conveniences. But it still retains the quality of a quiet paradise where the sun shines a little brighter and air is cooled by sea mist.
My husband and I always believed vacations were a necessity for good family health. It is my desire to maintain a clean and comfortable beach house that welcomes you as your summer home. I want you to enjoy this well-earned time with your family. I have stocked the kitchen with lots of extras to make your vacation a pleasure to prepare your family meals. Beds are made and double sets of towels for each family member are provided. The simplicity of playing on the beach together, playing board games, working puzzles, participating in a game of ping pong with your children are truly enjoyed.
My sons now have sons of their own. My five grandchildren often tell me how much they love The Whale's Tale...and want to visit again. To be sure, you and your family will love spending your vacation at The Whale's Tale.
October 26- 29th, 2016. From the moment we saw the pictures of the home, it called to us. It competed with the big McMansions lining the coast, one after another...looking all the same. For some reason the Whale's Tail always stayed at the top of the list. In the end, this sweet slice of OBX won, with all her charm and family vacation vibe. Once we spoke to Barbara [the owner], we knew why the house felt like home...it had absorbed years of love & family. We cannot say enough kind things about Barbara, as she is the home and the home is her. She has thought of everything...from providing beach towels to having martini glasses, and everything in between. Both her and her home were the most gracious hosts. Nothing was missing. We do suggest to be prepared for an OBX thing [NOT a Whale's Tail thing]: the water has an odor [kind of like well water]. It is safe. Barbara and the locals suggest drinking bottled water... and in a great host move, a case of water was waiting for us in the fridge. We cannot say enough nice things, so we will end with...YES, we will be staying here again. May the sun shine on your face and peace be in your heart, Namaste.
Ps. Rent a 4 wheel drive: there are not words to describe... "I just wanna drive 'til I run out of highway, into the purple sky". Which we did, right on to the beach and was stunned by the beauty. Thank you Kid Rock, for the lyrics. Thank you OBX for the experience.
We unfortunately did not get the opportunity to stay at The Whale's Tale due to a hurricane, however, Barbara, the owner, could not have been more pleasant to deal with from beginning to end. She was very thorough, very polite, very accommodating, very professional! You better believe the next time we plan to visit Corolla, we'll be checking The Whale's Tale for availability! Thank you Barbara and we wish you the best as Hurricane Matthew passes through your area.
My family has been coming to the Duck / Corolla area for years. We have stayed in many residences, but this year was different! First off -- so many items which normally take up valuable space in a vehicle are provided. The provided linens are of excellent quality, bath towels, beach towels etc. As an added bonus: (9) Tommy Bahama beach chairs and (4) Tommy Bahama beach umbrellas are provided! It is a 5-6 minute walk to the beach, but it is even easier with the provided beach cart - also Tommy Bahama. Boogie boards, bicycles and more are also provided.
So often you have a great day at the beach and sleep on a frumpy and lumpy mattress. Barbara ensured all beds have high quality mattresses! No more sore backs in the morning! The bathrooms are updated very nicely and were always welcoming. Everything was clean and tidy.
The kitchen is also nicely equipped with very nice appliances and nothing ls lacking. I could go on and on but stay here and see for yourself! The excellent location to all the amenities which Corolla has to offer makes this a hidden gem! Excellent communication with the owner throughout the booking and our 2 week stay. Highly recommended!
The Whale's Tale is such a nice home and Barbara does so much to keep this older house in top-notch shape. Everything was spotless, so nicely appointed, so many thoughtful touches, so many clean towels!! Kids enjoyed using the bike sand the hot tub. We were so glad we could bring our dog, Sadie, along for her first trip to the beach. We really enjoyed our stay.
The property although older as compared to other new flashy homes, was perfect for us. The house is nicely appointed, and maintained with very comfortable beds and plenty of linens, as well as an abundance of towels and etc... I was very impressed with the kitchen and all the different cookware that it contained, most places have a small limited amount, not here, there were several sizes of of each which made cooking so much easier, multiple cutting boards, knives and such also a great plus. There were no shortages of glasses, stemware, cutlery., plates. Nice touches in the kitchen included a wine/beverage fridge, another small refrigerator which the kids used for their beverages and water, and maragritaville machine. We cooked every meal except for one lunch during our stay, with the close proximity to the beach one of us would just go back and cook up lunch on the outdoor gas grill and bring the meal to the beach. The beach supplies were extensive, plenty of chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, towels and etc.. for every one in our party. The owner Barbra was very charming and informative and very accessible. The kids loved the short bike ride to the local ice cream shops, i liked that there were 5 bikes on site so we didn't have to bring ours. One tip i have is watch the sunset from the local park just down the road by the light house and the whale head club, amazing view.
