About Ken

I grew up in Canada, went to school in the United States and have spent the last 15 years of my life in Kyoto. I fell in love with this city, its temples, shrines and festivals within my first few years here and don't think I'll ever leave.

Ken purchased this house in 2014

Why Ken chose Kyoto

This house is between the Takase and the Kamo rivers in Kyoto. It offers cherry blossoms in Spring, fireflies in early summer, beautiful leaves in Autumn. This house is in a wonderful area. Easily accessible in a quiet and safe neighborhood.

It is half way between downtown Kyoto and Kyoto station. You can walk almost anywhere. There are restaurants and sight-seeing spots galore all around this house. The house is in one of the most traditional neighborhoods in Kyoto with sweet neighbors on either side.

This house not only has all the amenities of your home, but also lots of extras to make your stay in Kyoto not only traditional, but also comfortable.

What makes this house unique

Wonderful and convenient quiet retreat but could walk everywhere

  • 5 of 5

Our host helped us with anything we needed and the house is very well equipped and decorated. We will always remember our four night stay in the Gino area of Kyoto.

A Hidden Jewel In A Beautiful City

  • 5 of 5

My brother and I stayed here as part of our Christmas gifts to each other and we couldn't have been more happy with our decision to stay at this beautiful Machiya.

The photos do not do this place justice. It is truly a home you need to experience. It has all the traditional charms of a home in Kyoto yet has all the modern amenities you could need. The refrigerator with a touch to open button was definitely one of our favorites and we especially loved finding the green tea Kit Kats and water inside when we arrived at 11pm. Such a nice treat! The courtyard rock garden was also a pleasant treat and was especially beautiful at night when it was illuminated. The futons were also an interesting experience and worked wonders for my back!

In regards to the actual amenities...soap, conditioner, and shampoo is provided in each shower and they all smelled so lovely! A hair dryer is provided as well. We didn't use the kitchen for cooking but it was very well stocked with cookware, cutlery, and anything else you would need to serve a meal including cooking oils and some salts and spices. TVs provided local channels which was plenty for us as we spent most of our time outside of the house. There are a few drink vending machines around the corner if you get thirsty but don't want to run to the store. Keypad entry system was awesome and it was so great to not have to carry a key around with us. Wifi in the house worked perfectly and the list goes on.

The neighborhood is very safe and is located in a quaint area full of locals who'll wish you a good morning as you pass by. There is a train station nearby which made getting around Kyoto very easy. There are lots of restaurants nearby; if you have trouble choosing one I suggest asking Ken for some suggestions.

Ken took us on a tour of the area and showed us some of his favorite local spots. He is a wealth of information and has a few funny stories to tell :-) We thought it would be a quick 20 minute tour but without realizing we spent an amazing couple hours walking around Kyoto discovering places my brother and I wouldn't have found on our own.

If you have any doubt in your mind about staying here, stop thinking and just book it already. This place is amazing, in a perfect location, and I will definitely be coming here again.

Ken, thanks so much for your thoughtfulness and hospitality! We'll see you again soon!

P.S. we loved the big doggles in the loft!

We felt like part of the neighbourhood

  • 5 of 5

The Kiyomuzi Machiya was certainly accurately described. It was charming as well as modern.

Ken left a handy map with some tips for nearby attractions, we really loved the garden at Shoeisien.

Close to lots of interesting sights in walking distance and easy public transport for places further afield.

All the amenities of the house were clean and functioning well. Especially the bathrooms, they were great. The futons were also very comfortable. Highly recommended

We were happy to find that the pictures didn't do justice to this beautiful home. It was clean, spacious and very comfortable. Ken was very kind, helpful, and prompt in getting back to me.

Japanese immersion in Kyoto

  • 4 of 5

We brought our children to Japan to experience the culture. This home was the perfect compliment to that end. The house is clean and well appointed. While the futons and low table made us feel like we were living in the past, the new cutting edge appliances made us comfortable. (Excellent dishwasher, clothes washer, TVs, toaster over, stove, etc.) The home has only 2 toilets and all the beds are traditional futons on the tatami mat covered floors. We found the futons surprisingly comfortable. Ken is helpful and supplied us anything we needed promptly. The neighborhood is friendly. You can walk to almost anything you need or get a cab easily to visit sites. Don't miss the tavern around the corner (left out of the house). Delicious local sake and family style food. It was one of our favorite restaurants in Japan.

We would recommend this home to anyone traveling to Kyoto looking for a traditional Japanese experience. We will never forget the Machiya!

Oasis in Gion, supurb modern house in Kyoto

  • 5 of 5

This is a fabulous house in a great location. We were 2 families and the house had plenty of space to accomodate all of us, including 5 bedrooms, a great kitchen, dining and TV area. All the information provided on the sight was accurate with the owner provided plenty of information before we committed to booking the house for our stay.

The house is situated in a quiet area of Gion, 15 minute walk from Kyoto station and about the same to the central shopping area of Gion, with bus and subway stations a short walk away.

Ken is a fantastic host and was available when ever we needed help, including finding us a restaurant late on New Years Eve when our original booking cancelled on us, he managed the impossible. Thank you Ken for making our stay in Kyoto so wonderful, I highly recommend this house, and will look to stay again next time in Kyoto

Owner's Response: Dear Anthony & family, It was a pleasure having you and your family at KiYOMiZU Executive. I was a bit shocked when I got the call from you about your reservation disappearing on NEW YEAR'S EVE, but am glad that I could find you another place to help resolve the situation. It is always a treat to help my guests in anyway I can, especially as there are, not only language barriers but sometimes also cultural barriers. ***NOTE*** for future guests - double check your reservations before you come OR ask me to anytime - it would be my pleasure!!! Thanks and welcome back anytime Anthony.

There are so many beautiful temples and shrines, not to mention 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kyoto.

This house is within walking distance to many temples, shrines, gardens and lots of hiking paths.

The neighborhood is old and sweet with lots of kind locals. There are very few untouched areas in Kyoto and this is one of them. If you want an authentic Japanese experience, you're going to love this area for its serenity and safety.
