Overview

About the property

Farmhouse, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Your private recreation area is cradled between two heavily wooded hills. Experience life on a small farm in the opulence of the Appalachian Mountains, at the edge of the Cherokee National Forest. Cook family feasts in the country kitchen, where many a peck of peas have been canned or over your bonfire or barbecue pit.

Breakfast on the deck and rock the evenings away on the most comfortable porch rockers ever invented.

Fall asleep on the queen-sized bed with pillow top mattress to the sounds of the forest and the stream outside the master bedroom window. Awake watching the wooded hillside begin to become light. The custom decor in this bedroom and connected master bath reflect the forest hues.

Another bedroom is custom painted with a magic glow and decorated with mountain whimsy. The full sized futon is covered in plush pillow top for full sized bed comfort. A full bathroom is across the hall.

The third bedroom has two comfortable twin beds with lovely Laura Ashley print comforters and accenting artwork.

All bedrooms are well-lit with overhead lights and bedside lamps for reading your own favorite books, the owner/author's book, books by other local authors, or travel brochures about the many near-by amenities. Ceiling fans and central a/c and heat are available, although hardly ever required.

Horse lovers have four stalls to protect their ponies. Your pastures are very close to the riding trails of the Cherokee National Forest. Electric service allows for several RVs to be used simultaneously.

Your 8 1/2 acres are paradise for puppies and other pets. Nice neighbors are within shouting distance. Pets allowed; we do ask that you kennel them when you aren't supervising them. Kennels and stables provided for pets safety and comfort.

About Rachel

Wild Cajun Woman, Yvette, is a writer Author of Our Tennessee mountain Home I & II) and publisher and also a gourmet cook and caterer. Richard grew up on a chicken breeding farm in Massachusetts and loves tinkering and woodworking. He is also quite the cook, especially when it comes to decadent desserts.

We love gardening with friends, collecting wild nuts and berries for cooking and canning collecting fresh eggs from neighbors with yard hens, watching area artists at work, gold panning in Coker Creek (only 1 mile away), swimming at Indian Boundary Beach, day trips to whitewater rafting on the Ocoee, Chattanooga Riverfront venues, fresh vegetables at the near-by Mennonite market, Bluegrass music at local pickin' sessions, and learning the local lifestyle of the farm folks. Waterfalls throughout the area are some our favorite places to take a dip and fabulous photographs.

Tubing on the Tellico River is an awesome way to unwind. Our favorite places for lunch, when we're not picnicking, are Tellico Kats for perfect paninis and Tellico Beach Drive-In for fifties family style food while playing in the rushing river. Pastries from Tellico Grains Bakery are a must for all our breakfasts with guests and we love the funky, down-home atmosphere and food at Town Square Bakery and Cafe.

Tellico Library and The Bookshelf fill our needs for reading and reference materials, as well selling as Yvette's book. The Heritage Gift Shop is a must-see souvenir place, and most of our family and friends wouldn't leave without Bill of Bill's Pit Stop taking them gold-panning, a dozen yard eggs from Mamie's hens, and one of the books autographed written by local author Jack Darnell and published by Yvette.

Rachel purchased this farmhouse in 2006

Why Rachel chose Tellico Plains

Writer and publisher, Yvette, needed a place to renew herself after her husband's heart transplant and the couple's loss of their waterfront Louisiana home to Hurricane Katrina. We are quite charmed by the tranquil lifestyle offered at our Tennessee Mountain Home, so much so that Yvette wrote a books 'Our Tennessee Mountain Home' I and II about the life, our family visits and friends at this edge of the forest.

It has provided the home base for making many new memories with children grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends and family galore.

What makes this farmhouse unique

This is a perfect hub for vacationing in the mountains of Tennessee. The many adventures offered in the area bordering on your property draw many to our door.

We have always been thrilled to hear about the swims guests took at Indian Boundary Lake, the gold they found in nearby creeks, the wildlife and other sights they saw rocking on the porch and hiking on nearby trails, the Appalachian arts they discovered in local shops and museums, and the local whitewater rafting and kayaking they were able to enjoy.

You are less than 2 hours from Greater Atlanta's bright lights and big city, Chattanooga's riverfront charms, and Knoxville's nice neighborhoods. There are first class medical facilities in all three areas.

Gatlinburg and Dollywood are also only 2 hours away. Your Tennessee Mountain Home is 2 miles from the North Carolina state line and 30 miles from the North Georgia mountains.

Four wheel drive is not required to get to your mountain retreat, even if there is mud or ice. Half the property is up high and half is in the holler. Plenty of place for RVs, trailers, soccer matches, baseball, badminton, boccie ball, fishing, etc.

Great stay. The cabin was rustic and we were able to use the woodburning fireplace. Thanksgiving was wonderful here.

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay with children and dogs. Lots to see and do in the area, waterfalls are not far. Really loved the property and letting the kids and dogs have some fresh air and freedom to run around.

Outside is beautiful. Inside???

  • 1 of 5

I did not chose "I loved it!" for the question above, and it would not let me change it.

My friends had not arrived when they were expected. Tried to call to check on them. No cell signal. At all. I tried to call from the phone in the home. Mobile phones blocked. Drove around for a while, and still no signal. Finally stopped at the Welcome Center down the road. Thank goodness they had a booster so I could at least call her.

Very difficult to locate. Outside property is very beautiful. Inside was nice, until we noticed how unclean it was. The top of the microwave looked like it had not been touched in a while. All cookware on the rack was dusty, everything had to be washed before we could even use it. Stove very outdated, which is fine, if it had worked right. Refrigerator either wasn't cold enough or just a minuet turn of the dial and everything froze. Had fixed soup one night, put it in fridge and was frozen solid the next day.

Beds not comfortable. Hall shower and toilet not clean (especially under lid - gross!) Not sure about master bathroom, as my friends were in that room, but I can't imagine it was much better.

Owner very slow to respond to questions.

This property would be fine for someone who doesn't want a shred of civilization. But I do want to point out one thing. The above things, like no cell phone service and no secure wi-fi, need to at least be disclosed in case of an emergency, there is no way to get in touch with anyone or vice-versa.

This is the 2nd time I have used VRBO and had bad experiences both times. No more.

Everything needed for a weekend cabin. : )

  • 5 of 5

The Fire Pit was incredible, we had a roaring blaze in no time. There was some charcoal and lighter fluid for the grill, and we cooked some brats and hot dogs for dinner. The porch was very nice and plenty of seating.

The Gaming Room was a little scary (not as scary as the "Exercise Room"), but we got to enjoy some bocce ball on the large property, which was a lot of fun. Would stay again.
