Village at Squaw Valley, 1 Bed, 1 Bath. Quiet,Cozy,Convenient! Ski-In/Ski-Out

Bedrooms 1
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 0 - 3 nights

About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4) Ski-In/Ski-Out

The ideal location to ski Squaw is in the village at Squaw. The village has ambience, amenities, is somewhere to shelter you from the elements. Zero driving time means more ski time.

Your ski pass includes Alpine Meadows too. Alpine is more family oriented and is a less intense resort than Squaw. Linked to Squaw with shuttles, but it is easier to drive around (10-15 minutes.

You are living on the slopes. So you can get up the mountains fast. Ahead of people who drive in and have to park. You may get more powder snow if first tracks is your thing.

Squaw has many high speed lifts. Lines are only a problem on holidays. But even then you can start early, rest mid morning and ski again over lunch to avoid the crowds.

You can rest more. I used to be a ski guide in the French alps. Best run is usually second one after a rest in the early afternoon. Snow is soft, sun is out. Long live the fair weathered skier. If the weather gets bad, you are near home to shelter. Cooking for yourself is always healthier than eating out, and the condo is well equipped to do this. I like the Chinese food at Gold Coast. $10 is a deal for a large bowl of stir fry.

There are great jaccuzzis in the building. There is the Trilogy spa if you need a massage.

Carry your skis 100 yards to a ski lift. KT22 express (advanced) , Red Dog (moderate) or aerial tramway (beginners). You can come back for lunch. California has the most spring (fair weather) skiing I have found. After all it is a semi desert. Cold nights watch ice early mornings, start later or get up high where less ice forms. It is often warm late mornings. So layer, take a back pack, or head back to the condo to decoat.

You are paying to use the condo. So use it. Come back and forth a lot. Pop out to the village to people watch or grab a coffee.

I take my skis off in front of Funitel (at the end of Red Dog Run). Carry my skis through the village to main reception, drop them, my boots and helmet in the ski locker, go up one floor and the condo is towards the end of a quiet corridor.

Quiet is important to me. It takes good planning to have people living on top of people and maintain it. Fewer people passing the door maintains quiet. Concrete/sound insulated floors also keep it quiet. There is a little noise from water in pipes. There may be noise from snow ploughs in the lot, but this is less than the noise of the snow cats working all night or drunks in the village drag.

See the plan in the apartment pictures.

When you open the front door to the apartment you look past the kitchen on your left to the dining area, into the living room. Please, take off your shoes or boots and place them with coats in the closet facing the door.

The bathroom is to the right. It is medium sized, has a powerflush toilet, granite topped single sink, bath with shower curtain, and warmed slate floor. Please keep the shower curtain up against the wall to prevent water damage. Thanks. The bath is an oasis. Try an epsom salt bath bath to relieve aching muscles...

Is private, contains a California King Bed which will soon have a duvet (I don't like heavy blankets). Half the closet is yours. I need space for my ski stuff and cleaning supplies on the other. Has a regular tv hooked to its own dvd. Has an ethernet cable, over the bed fan and window that looks out on the small balcony.

The kitchen has all the plates and pots, pans etc to caters for 6 people. Full size fridge. I plan each meal and get enough food from Safeway in Truckee (turn left after you come off 80).

The dining room table is tight in under an extra granite surface, good for meals and computers. Ethernet cable is there too.

Sofa pulls out to a queen bed. Small for 2 adults, ok for 2 smaller people.

There is an ultra-flat screen 2011 Samsung TV with Blu-ray located in the living room. I am sure some small digital genius will be able to play games on it (bring your own games and controls).

Heat the apartment using the gas fireplace, the radiators make it too hot. The air in a ski resort is always too dry, because it is so cold at night. I may bring a humidifier... There can be a cold draft from under the balcony door. I put a towel down there.

Squaw has easy access to the Granite Chief Wilderness area, Pacific Crest Trail (PCT): take the Tram from the Village (6200ft) to High Camp (8200ft). There are also loop trail around Donner Lake or Lake Tahoe. Alpine valley is more lush and green. Or 5 lakes trail takes you gently up to beautiful mountain lakes

Rafting down the Little Truckee river or following the river to Tahoe City on foot, bike or rollerblades is fun.

There is a road from Soda Springs (Sugar Bowl turn off of Hwy 80) to Donner Lake that may take your breath away.

I employ a perfectionistic American cleaner. She now uses green/environmental friendly cleaning products! She will only clean the apartment when you have gone. Though for long stay clients she is available to clean during your stay for a small fee. Checkout time is 10am. Cleaning gratuity is appreciated.

Thanks and please send me feedback on your stay, so I can make it even better for you.

I am considering having a list of provisions you check off be in the apartment for your arrival.

Dr Ian van Zyl.

Convenient, we’ll-stocked condo, with helpful property manager

  • 5 of 5

Nice condo that is slightly larger (wider) than most 1 bedrooms at the village. Very conveniently located to the hot tubs. Faces main parking lot so can be noisy at night if trucks are plowing snow.

Property manager (Kerri), is wonderful. Very responsive and accommodating. I was originally worried about needing to directly mail a check for payment instead of paying through VRBO with a credit card, but I had no issues.

Great Location with all the essentials

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary at our wedding venue and thoroughly enjoyed a much more relaxing and schedule free weekend :-). The condo has all the essentials and owners also provided some of the basics like shampoo/conditioner, soap, coffee/tea/hot cocoa, etc. We only utilized the kitchen some-storing and heating leftovers, though it would have everything you need to cook a meal. The condo is conveniently a door or 2 down from the spa/sauna/fitness center entrance of this building (which also has the best spa area in my opinion of all the buildings). Condo is also located opposite of the inner village which helps keep it more quiet from village activities but convenient enough to enjoy activities and restaurants in the village (you may here more parking lot activity as people leave in the evening or late night, but you're in the village so you're bound to get some noise anywhere, with windows closed, it's very minimal). The bed was not the most comfortable to us, though the linens and bath towels were nice and soft. We did hit a relatively hot weekend in Tahoe but the condo has an overhead fan in the bedroom and box fan available as well which helped keep it cooler. Price was very reasonable as well! Overall a great stay close to village activities, high camp, and short drive or bike ride away from Tahoe City/lake.

About Kerri

British and American doctors who live in the Wine Country north of Calistoga, CA. She is currently back in school, becoming a specialist (Periodontist/Dental Implant Surgeon). He is a Specialist (Prosthodontist). We ski in the winter and often travel to Europe in the summer. I hike in the Sierras in the summer as it boosts our energy. Our two dogs Frodo and Chloe ski and hike with us.

Kerri purchased this apartment in 2011

Why Kerri chose Olympic Valley

For the past 12 years, we skied out of the back of our car. It was primitive, and we got tired of it. Now we enjoy skiing, resting and being able to cook at the bottom of the slopes. Location, location location. And our dogs like the apartment too.

What makes this apartment unique

Quiet, safe, covered heated parking. Near the gym, sauna and powerful jet jacuzzi, easy access skiing, easy access mountain hiking.

Rafting down Truckee river, roller blading and cycling down footpath of little Truckee river, cable car access near (8200ft) Granite Chief Wilderness area.
