Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday villa in Scicli - Villa con Piscina - El Encanto

With its white stucco walls, brightly tiled floors and sunny terraces, El Encanto is a charming fully air-conditioned compact home filled with Sicilian touches. Steps lead down through the lovely, shaded garden and past the swimming pool to a flower-filled courtyard between two loggias, one for lounging and the other for dining, with a long table, wood oven and summer kitchen. The courtyard overlooks a grove of pomegranate, carob and orange trees and leads, though a pair of double doors, into the interior dining room. El Encanto is set at the edge of a valley where walking trails lead through an ancient Greek quarry. Modica, a short distance away, is a vibrant and historic city within an area renowned for its Baroque architecture and beautiful beaches.

In Sicily’s hilly south-east, best known for the Baroque cities of Ragusa, Noto and Scicli, all of which lie within 20km/12.5 miles of the property. The nearest shops are in or on the way to Modica, 5km/3 miles, which has a lovely 'centro storico' as well as one of Italy’s most famous bakeries, the Pasticceria Bonaiuto. There are sand or rock beaches within a 10km/6-mile drive to the south or east.

Ground floor

Air conditioned sitting room. Fitted kitchen with exposed stone walls opening to small terrace. Air conditioned dining room opening to the courtyard and loggias. Bathroom with shower.

First floor

Air conditioned twin bedroom. Air conditioned double bedroom. Air conditioned double bedroom with sloping ceilings and mosquito net. Bathroom with bath.

El Encanto is ideally situated both for trips to the sea (15 minutes’ drive away in Sampieri, though there are many other beaches along the coast within easy driving distance) and to some of Sicily’s most beautiful towns: the UNESCO-protected Baroque pearls of, Modica, Scicli, Ragusa and Noto. Siracusa is also within easy driving distance as are the quiet beaches of the Nature Reserve at Vendicari.

Charming, relaxing and quiet villa

  • 5 of 5

The many components of a wonderful villa stay include a responsive owner, a responsible/responsive manager, and a clean, well-equipped comfortable house. All were well met.

Communications with the owner were prompt and helpful. This was true during the reservation process as well as before and during our stay.

The local managers could not have been nicer or more responsive. One evening when Mariangela's phone was out of charge, she drove over to the villa to deliver some information. She went out of her way always including tracking us down when we were lost one day and driving us back to the villa! Her father helped with a maintenance issue while we were there and he also was extremely nice.

The villa is lovely. The pomegranates and limes were ripe while we were there, adding an additional treat. The grounds are manicured and full of fruit trees and flowers. The pool is very large and well maintained. Summer guests will really enjoy that part of the garden. There is a very large deck area and deck lounges.

The villa is larger than the photos would indicate. We are all kitchen fanatics and were really pleased to see the great appliances and cookware. There is a Bosch dishwasher and a 5 burner gas cooktop.

The washer is also Bosch and in a very large laundry room in the second building across the courtyard. We didn't use either the pizza oven and gas cooktop located on the loggia but it is very nice. The loggia is a lovely place to enjoy meals and your evening.

Two of the bedrooms are large. The third one is smaller with twin beds, but still very adequate. We all loved the comforters on the beds and generally found the beds comfortable enough.

The dining room is larger than the photos would indicate. It is also lovely.

We could not get our GPS to recognize the coordinates of the villa so simply used the nearby church as our "home" point. We did not find that the area was easy to find our way around. GPS via your phone will provide the answer to that issue.

The villa is not suited for anyone with mobility issues as there are steps leading everywhere. It was not a problem for us but should be considered if you have an issue.

Security is very good. The property has an electric gate and the house has bars on the windows as well as extra metal doors to the exterior. The villa is remote enough that I can see why this would be necessary. Certainly there was no problem. The security is precautionary. Book it! You will love it!

Beautiful Villa just currently not fir for purpose

  • 2 of 5

My family and I were so excited about our annual holiday, and from the pictures we had seen from the website, Villa El Encanto looked the perfect place. We arrived at night and the villa was all lit up and looked beautiful.

The views from the villa were breath taking and the sun was so so hot, we all had a really good feeling about our week ahead.

Unfortunately it was on that first day, that the week ahead became full of frustrations.

It started with the electricty to the villa, continually going on and off, with the caretaker being contacted and coming out to us and showing us how to reset it. That was day one. Everyday after this we had to call the caretaker out due to further problems with the villa, from there being no water, to then having water, to then having no hot water, to then having no hot water, or water or electricity.

Our calm, relaxing holiday that we had paid for then turned into work men coming into the villa every day of our holiday bar one day when we didn't bother telling them what the problem for that day was as we just wanted a day to ourselves. It really spoilt the holiday for us, as we were unable to relax and enjoy our time as a family. By the end of the week, we had all totally had enough of the problems, the having no water, having no hot water, and electricity during the week had taken its toll and us and we left early for the airport although we had already looked at coming home earlier in the week but the cost of the flights were too expensive.

The villa looks stunning and the pool was beautiful but we feel that the villa was not in a good enough condition to rent out, as it was not fit for purpose for our stay which was a real shame.

We will not be returning to El Encanto.

Owner's Response: I’m really very sorry for the frustations of Colin but we did our best to support him during his stay. The caretaker has been there every day with different workers to fix the problems. I had 6 different guests before Colin and we always received wonderful reviews, now I’m spending my holiday in El Encanto and I don’t have this kind of problems. I try to explain what happened. This Villa is located in the country, the water comes from a source with an electric pump, this means that if you have no electricity you don’t have any water, the same for the water heater, air conditioning, etc. During the week of Colin’s stay we had some problem with electric voltage, not for our responsibility but for responsibility of the electricity provider, they explained me that they had to do some maintenance work in the power line. The caretaker has been at disposal 24H and he called many different workers to fix the problem. We explained everything to Colin but perhaps he didn’t understand the problem, it was sufficient to avoid to put ON all the lights and the electric equipments at the same time, but the caretaker referred me that usually everything was ON: also the lights of garden in the morning!!! I arrived at Villa just after him for my usual summer vacation and now I’m here and never the electricity went off. This year I had many guests at El Encanto (see feedback in the Airbnb website) and in the past I worked for more than 10 years with an agency in London for renting El Encanto and I always had wonderful reviews. I can’t permit that the unjustified frustration of a person could compromise the reputation of El Encanto, also because he has been the first Homeaway guest and this means that El Encanto will have on Homeaway only a negative review. And I find this profoundly unjust. Giovanni Modica August 7, 2015

Peaceful beauty

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks at El Encanto in July 2016 with two kids (3&6 yo) - and it was perfect

+ very large, park-like garden with plenty of places to sit down and relax

+ very quiet and private

+ spacious house, privacy for everyone

+ large and beatifully situated pool (separate area of the garden so that it was very clear for the kids that they must not go here without parents)

+ all amenities in place (dish washer, washing machine, kitchen utensils, bluetooth loudspeakers, outside kitchen, Nespresso coffee machine, ...)

+ great service by Giovanni and Mariangela (however, did not really need them since everything was functioning)

The only minor imperfection is the kitchen which is a bit outworn (e.g., sink has many scratches etc so that it is impossible to really clean it etc) - but still acceptable.

By the way: the pictures are realistic - this is really what it looks like.
