t was the fourth and last voyage of the Admiral. After discovering the island of Guanaja, Columbus goes ashore to Punta Caxinas, now Punta Castilla. It is the discovery of Honduras, the beginning of the Conquest. The natural conditions of the Bay of Trujillo were ideal for turning it into an emporium. Protected by the barrier of Punta Castilla, the bay was a haven of calm and deep waters. In 1525, Juan de Medina founded the city of Trujillo, named after the Spanish city, birthplace of his superior, Francisco de las Casas. But life in Trujillo was never easy. From the beginning, friction among several Spanish captains, plus diseases and the resistance of the Indians placed the city in a precarious situation. Trujillo was barely starting to prosper, when the first French outlaw attack was made on the seaport, July 7, 1558.
From there on the city became the target of pirates and privateers; soon the Spanish crown was obligated to appoint resources to protect the city. The first attempts to prevent the attacks were in 1575 when the Spanish provided the first pieces of artillery and decided to build a stronghold. The building was designed by the year 1586 and than eventually built in 1629, according to the customs and techniques of the time. But the defensive system was so weak that the city remained a victim of the bandits. Trujillosuffered about ten massive attacks in just that century alone.
Nevertheless, the city and the stronghold survived. The times of the banana company came to Trujillo and with it great prosperity. The city enjoyed years of splendor. Trade intensified and consulates of other countries settled in the city. After the departure of the multinational corporation, the city lost power. Now, convinced of its enormous natural wealth, Trujillo begins a new chapter.
The Guaymoreto lagoon, The Capiro y Calentura National Park, the Santa Fe or Campamento beaches (the most beautiful of the north coast) are part of the natural wealth of this land. Added to that is a colonial legacy and hundreds of pre-Columbian sites yet to be uncovered. Trujillo still has a story to be told.
Far from the beaten path of tourism, Trujillo rests against one of the most beautiful beaches of the Atlantic while being guarded by the mountains of Capiro and Calentura. Come to Trujillo to escape commercial tourist destinations and seek refuge in the peaceful town. The natural attractions surrounding the city will make your trip most enjoyable. A place to explore and really relax.
