A note to guests considering this home: THIS HOME IS PERFECTLY IMPERFECT. In our experience over the years we have learned that there is a small percentage of very discerning guests who require absolute perfection and there is nothing wrong with that - to each his own. If you fall in that category, then this lovely home may not be a good fit for you, and we encourage you to look elsewhere or even go with one of the many hotels in the Pittsburgh area. We truly want all of our guests to have a positive experience and we do our best to facilitate that. We know that it begins with an accurate description on our part which will inspire reasonable expectations on the part of the guest. The photos and detailed description of this home have been assessed and are very accurate in our opinion. With that said, for our more adaptive guests, this just might be a wonderful choice at a great value for you and your family to call your "Home Away From Home" while visiting Pittsburgh. Overall what we do offer and can control is an updated, nicely furnished, comfortable and clean home that is fully functioning. What we cannot offer or control is someone's unique experience of it. What some may perceive as flaws, others may perceive as character charm. It truly is in the eyes of the beholder and the majority of our guests have found it to be a great home at a great value, that fit their needs exceptionally well.

Why Barbara Dawson, Property Manager chose Pittsburgh

We absolutely loved this home the moment we walked through the front doors. The huge welcoming kitchen and downstairs sunroom are our favorite rooms! We were so excited to furnish it and share it with Pittsburgh travelers. We love how it is literally minutes from Interstate 376, so it's easy access to just about anywhere in Pittsburgh. And right at the top of the street is a huge shopping plaza where just about everything you need is can be found, including a grocery store. It's so close you can walk there!

What makes this house unique

We've had many guests comment on the deer and other wildlife they've been able to observe in the backyard from the sunroom that is basically 3 walls of windows.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The house was very neat and the owner was very helpful. The host, Barbara, responded to msgs and requests quickly. Also, the location was very convenient. It was close to grocery shops, restaurants and not far from downtown area. The nice thing about the property was we got to use the garage and it added a lot ease for entry and exit. However, it would be more handy for guests if the owner could leave a hairdryer in the bathroom and some aluminum foils in the kitchen. Overall, we had a great stay there.

We stayed 5 days and had a great time! We took advantage of the BBQ and the Tiki Room during this time. One of the things we enjoyed was seeing all the wild animals run through the the back yard , deer, fox and some animal we could not make out, at dusk. The place was very clean and comfortable. I like the fact there was a "throw" blanket to cuddle up with in the living room. We were able to prepare our meals, as there was ample cookware and dishes. We never had to purchase anything during our stay. Shopping was very close, for whatever our needs were.I liked the fact, even though there are TV's in every bedroom and living room, I could go down to the family room, turn the TV on early in the morning, and not bother anyone. I would totally recommend this home for those that want "A home away from home". It was very nice that the property manager left a "welcome letter" giving all info needed to stay or questions we might have. I would recommend this property .

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for the glowing review. We are very happy that you enjoyed the home and it's amenities! Thank you also for leaving the home in such pristine shape! I am thinking perhaps the animals you saw at dusk that you couldn't identify may have been our groundhog couple that have been dubbed by our guests as Mr. & Mrs. Pittsburgh Pete. Hope to have you back in the near future!!

Somewhat Misrepresented!

  • 2 of 5

Based on the property description, I expected a comfortable and clean home. While the home comfortable in size, I would not describe it as clean by my standards. For example, I had to scrub the shower walls and tub. The mold and grime was obviously not cleaned in quite a while. Additionally, the floors were filthy . That was evident when we walked in our white socks. The tiki bar room had a strange brown substance leaking into the room. Lastly, 2 of the 3 bedrooms have air mattresses. The mattresses however, weren't the only obstacle to sleeping well. The fire station siren went off every night of our stay. Overall, I was somewhat disappointed.

Near perfect Location

  • 4 of 5

This lovely home is convenient to the shopping plaza and just off both the turnpike and the parkway. back yard is HUGE and a great place for dogs to play.

The driveway is not for the feint of heart when it snows. We parked at the fire hall and walked down after getting two cars stuck there.

Good pet-friendly very close to busy road

  • 3 of 5

The rental had everything we needed. We always appreciate it when an owner is willing to share their home with us and makes sure that we have the essentials. The property is located on a very steep hill and very close to a busy roadway. There were some challenges pulling in and out of the driveway with our pick-up truck and the road noise is not something we are used to so our dogs were a bit stressed. The home does smell musty/damp and this permeated all of our clothing and travel bags but the place was very clean.

Excellent place to stay with kids!

  • 5 of 5

I dread being cooped up in a hotel room shushing my kids, so we decided to try renting a house for this trip. I couldn't be more pleased with the Universal House! Everything was exactly as promised, or better. The house was clean, comfortable, well-furnished, and pleasant. We had plenty of room for the kids to play inside and outside, and the 3-season porch overlooking the back yard was a favorite spot to sit. I found absolutely everything I could possibly need stocked in the kitchen (pans, tools, spices) so I was able to cook meals and save money. We loved the board games we found in the closet, and enjoyed spotting deer and birds in the back yard all day long. The house has no clutter; even the garage was empty so we could keep our bikes, bike rack and second car inside, which was very handy as it rained a lot. I loved being able to throw in a load of laundry, too! We found all the paper goods and cleaning supplies we needed (even though we expected to have to purchase these). Staying in this house was like going to house-sit for a very neat and considerate relative. It is not fancy or hotel-like, but very clean, comfortable and felt like home. Having a door code instead of a key was also very convenient. The grocery stores, restaurants and, my favorite, Dunkin Donuts, are just a minute away. It is very easy to get on 376 and drive right into Pittsburgh about 10 miles away. We would recommend this house to our best friends and hope to go back the next time we visit Pittsburgh.

Comfortable and private.

  • 5 of 5

We loved this home. Clean and well-stocked, with a really nice sunroom/Tiki bar. Lots of privacy in the wooded backyard for our dogs and us. My husband managed to back into the driveway so it was easy to get out safely. Pittsburgh was great to visit. We recommend Point State Park, The Andy Warhol Museum and Market Square, for an outdoor café.
