Overview

About the property

Centrally located 2 story, 4 BR, 2 Bath historic cottage near the beach.

This Beach Cottage built in the early 1900's approximately a block from the beach. The cottage sits on two large lots in a tropical setting of palms, large banana trees, camellia's, and oleanders. You will relax outdoors on the front porch or in the garden patio area complete with grill and fire-pit. Sorry, not wheelchair accessible.

The two story property offers a true cottage feel with original hardwood floors and eleven foot ceilings upstairs. Here you find a cottage style kitchen, one bath, two bedrooms and a sitting room. The upstairs is furnished with one queen bed, one double bed and a queen sofa sleeper.

The downstairs area has a beach inspired decor that will brighten your day. There you will find two bedrooms providing a queen bed and two twin beds. Additionally you will find a day bed in the family room. Downstairs includes one bath and a large laundry room.

The property is located one mile west of the Island View Casino and close to Historic downtown Gulfport with some of the best seafood restaurants the coast has to offer. Also nearby you will find Gulfport harbor which includes a free children's splash park and hosts many festivals, boat shows, Ship Island excursions, and fishing charters.

Just steps away you will find the kid-friendly Westside park which includes a splash pad and the westside fishing pier. You will enjoy long walks on the white sandy beaches, watch the sunrise across the barrier islands. All the while experiencing what the Mississippi beach life has to offer.

For the Sportman, guided fishing trips can be arranged as well. The owner is an avid fisherman and local fishing guide. All tackle, bait, fish cleaning, and valuable information included. Check him out at ReelOutlawCharters.com and WildBills-fishin-blog.simplesite.com.

About Bill Hancock

This property has been in my family for many years. In the past we have shared this cottage with friends and family as a weekend getaway. We now offer our home as a vacation rental. Our family has always enjoyed the Coastal life. Fishing is one of our favorite things to do and we still enjoy it today.

Bill Hancock purchased this cottage in 1974

Why Bill Hancock chose Gulfport

This property has been in our family for years. Our children and grand-children have many fond memories of times spent in this place. They look forward to using this place as their get-a-away. As it has been quoted, 'If you are lucky enough to live by the sea, you are lucky enough!'

What makes this cottage unique

The beach lifestyle is so accessible here. Everything is within walking distance or bike riding distance. No cars necessary to enjoy the sandy beaches or fishing piers. It is centrally located to the unique shops in Bay Saint Louis and Ocean Springs. There are so many festivals and events to experience; such as the fishing rodeo's. There is nothing like seeing the gamefish brought in daily during the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, held annually on the Forth of July weekend. This event is held right down the street at the Gulfport Harbor/Jones Park.

Cute place

  • 4 of 5

There are pros and cons to this place, just like any other. Before booking I noted the problems others had with the fact that there was only one shower and one TV and booked anyway. We were fine with only having one shower and one TV, the problems were the location of the TV and functionality of the shower. The shower is very small, my husband is 6'3" and could barely fit, and also has a problem draining, so by the end of the shower you'd be standing is 3 inches of water which kind of grossed me out. The TV is located in the downstairs living area, so you had to walk through the bedroom with the twin beds to get to it, risking waking people, or had to enter and exit through the outside door and re enter the house through another door. It would make much more sense to move the TV to the upstairs living area as it would be more centrally located and all of the upstairs bedrooms can be closed off from it so that you are not disturbing anyones sleep by watching TV.

The decor is super cute and the owner did anticipate needs...there are plenty of beach towels, bags, toys, a hair dryer, iron, lots of things like that.

I think overall this house would be best for adults only or for families with older children (like ages 4 and up). The stairs and decor were a problem with having a 2-year-old and crawling baby with us. Although the decor is cute, it could be kind of cluttered and we had to constantly worry about the baby getting into stuff. Also, the owners did provide baby gates for the top and bottom of the stairs, but they did not stay very well and served more as a visual wall for th kiddos rather than actually keeping them from going up/down the stairs.

Also, I was under the impression based on one of the reviews that the beach was within walking distance, however this is only if you dont have small children with lots of stuff that you are taking with you. We were fine with having to drive though with the price of the place compared to other places we looked.

Had a GREAT time!

  • 5 of 5

Easy Check-in. House is super cute. Close to the beach and not too far from Ocean Springs and Bay St. Louis where all the cute little shops are! Lots of great places to eat at as well!! The house was clean and we all enjoyed our stay. We used the charcoal grill and the fire pit! There is no Wi-Fi which was ok for most of us, but my husband was there for work as well and so he had to find a place to use his laptop. There is only the one TV but we didn't watch much of that during our stay, so no one cared. The only thing that was a little off was that there is only one shower ( there are 2 bathrooms, one just has a bathtub). And that one shower is small. I am taller and I kept hitting my hands on the ceiling when I was washing my hair. But Please don't let this stop you from this house!!! It is super cute and I would stay there again in a heartbeat!!! Mr. Bill was quick to respond when I asked him a question about firewood. He answered with a very detailed location of where I could purchase some at. Overall it was a great stay and my group had a wonderful time!

More than we could have asked for

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay in this beautiful "cottage". There were a total of 8 people in our group, and there was enough space for everyone to have an area to retreat to and not feel crowded. I'll agree with a previous reviewer and say, although there was only one TV, it turned out to not even be an issue. The beds were very comfortable. I also need to note that even the little details in the decorations were outstanding. They've gone through a lot of trouble to make you feel comfortable and to make sure you would not be in want for anything during your stay. If we find ourselves in the area again, we will absolutely stay here.

Great stay!

  • 4 of 5

The house is charming, lots of cute touches. Plenty of room for all 8 of us. We were concerned (at first) there was only one TV, but after the first day it didn't matter. We never even turned it on. We loved the fire pit and spent most of our time at the house outside. The house had everything we needed. We had a great time. Thanks to Bill and Rebecca.
