I purchased this 1870s home in 1988 when the neighborhood was depressed but now it is on a revival slated to have the worlds tallest Ferris wheel (tallest in the USA) finished by April 2017. The NY Wheel will be not quite directly in front of the house and so will the all new attractions of Staten Island which is the 5th borough of New York City. The island is serviced by a free ferry to Manhattan and it is so close to the terminal and that is one of the reasons I bought the house. Convenience of Location, a safe neighborhood with trees and a garden, what more could you ask for? I am a professional interior designer and have had many years of renovating and decorating this wonderful old house. I hope you will love it as much as I do.
Robin Levin purchased this house in 1988
Very happy with the stay at Robin's rental. Robin was a pleasure to rent from. Welcomed us warmly...and then gave us complete privacy. Never even heard them upstairs. The home itself--very much like staying at your aunts home. We rented the first floor-- a 2 bedroom unit of a large 3 story home for 6 nights. 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 10 &12). Very quiet place...so much better than a hotel for a light sleeper! Charming old fashioned home with high ceilings and a nice mix of modern (wifi, flat screen, updated kitchen, new comfy sofa, a/c) and traditional or antique furnishings. Everything was very clean and good working order. Kitchen well stocked beyond the bare bones usually found in vacation rental kitchens. Although I did not locate a cookie sheet, betting Robin would have provided one if I had asked. New mattresses the day we arrived which we found very comfortable, but are firm. If you prefer squishy beds, pack a topper. Queen bedroom spacious. Kids bedroom was super tiny but fine for 2 kids. They liked the twin trundle and preferred the 2 twins to sharing a hotel bed. Only thing we lacked was a 2nd bathroom, but no different than most hotel rooms. Loved having full kitchen/dining/living room and *free* parking in front of the house all week. Never an issue with parking. New key foods supermarket nearby...but you must drive. Smaller convenience stores nearby (walkable) but we preferred the key foods supermarket. Neighborhood walk from the house to the ferry takes 5 - 10 minutes & always felt safe. Ferry is super convenient, free, and runs every 20-30 minutes. Never waited longer than 10 minutes. About a 20 minute ferry ride. Always able to get a seat, and gorgeous views from the ferry. First time taking the ferry over we found the subway station just outside the ferry terminal bought our 7 day subway passes...and we were off. We explored most of lower and mid manhattan and brooklyn from the rental. Highly recommend seeing a staten island Yankees game while here. Wish we had more days to explore staten island itself, and the other bouroughs. Next trip!! We would rent here again, and if the kids ask for another NYC vacation we will try to rent from Robin again. Next time, we may opt to rent the small downstairs apartment too to give the kids a bit more space and gain a 2nd bathroom. Nearly perfect! Kids had a fabulous and memorable NYC trip. Thank you Robin - we had a very enjoyable stay.
The Queen bed in the Master bedroom now has a "squishy
My son and I visited New York for the first time and we're so glad we chose to stay at Robin's apartment on Staten Island. She is a great communicator and was a big help to us in planning our trip. The apartment was comfortable, clean, well provisioned, and in such an interesting old house. The best part to us was the wonderful open views from our living room and along our walks to and from the ferry terminal. We did enjoy having the bus available in front of the house and used it when it rained. The ferry ride is easy, fast and enjoyable, and we never tired of it, with interesting sights in every direction. Subways and buses are convenient to the Whitehall terminal and we enjoyed using mass transit all over Manhattan, and had no problem even to and from LaGuardia. It was a great place to stay, adding a whole different and beautiful point of view to our trip to NYC.
We stayed here for 4 nights. We all felt like being in our own. Home had everything more than what we need. It was more spacious with 2 bed rooms, living and dining room. It does have huge kitchen with backyark / patio to sit, relax and have a cofee :-). Robin was wonderful host. She was very kind and helpful. She was comfortable to cancel and re-book my travel dates without fee.Location..! This home is walkable distance to Staten Island Ferry or 3 minutes bus ride in front of the home to the ferry . Every single day my family enjoyed the free ferry ride to lower manhattan in 20 minutes.Kids had a good time They were surprised by seeing those toys which we forgot.Pack 'n' go was very useful for our 8 months old baby. This home has a good ocean view and downtown view in few yards away. Free street parking in front of the home. It so easy to take senior people to for visiting NYC attractions without metro & crowd .It was sad to leave the home after a short vacation. Hosts checks to make sure guests were comfortable.I strongly recommend this We will hit this place when we visit our favorite city NYC. Above all, It is highly secured and having police station a block away from this home is a plus. Thanks !
We stayed 4 nights with 2 bed rooms in this house. We could take Staten Ferry easily when we entered Manhattern. We saw Stature of Liberty on the ferry. It's a very convenient place and welcome mood. Moreover we could park our car on the street. Staying this house was a good experience in NY.
Our family has visited New York City several times and usually would stay in New Jersey. This time, we chose to stay at Robin's house on Staten Island. We were so happy with our decision. The house was cozy, comfortable, clean, stocked with kitchen needs, paper products, linens, towels, etc. We were so happy with our decision. While making our decision, Robin responded immediately to our emails and questions. When we arrived, Robin immediately greeted us. She directed us to the local grocery story and helped us get settled in. The house sits directly across from Manhattan. It was awesome to look at the breath-taking New York City skyline on our walks to and from the Staten Island ferry terminal. The walk is less than 10 minutes. We took the ferry to get in and out of the city. The ferry ride was easy, fast, relaxing and enjoyable. While on the ferry, we saw the Statue of Liberty... and other beautiful sights--the skyline, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. Once in NYC, we used the subway or walked. Overall, it was a wonderful trip and a great place to stay. We would recommend others to stay in Robin's beautiful house! Thank you, Robin.
My husband and I spent 8 days in Robin's apartment. The apartment was clean, comfortable and well-equipped. We had communicated with Robin and she was comfortable that we were bringing our 20 lb. dog. Her only feedback was "not to let the dog get on the furniture" or to "run free in the backyard." I am very careful to follow the rules in the places I stay, and it was my mistake to not ask more detail. I understood the "run free in the backyard" to mean don't leave him out there off leash or to keep him under control, she meant "I don't want your dog outside off leash at all." We were out working all day with our dog, so our he was in the yard ~5-6 times for about 1.5 minutes each. He simply peed by the hostas/dirt/tree and came back in. There is no grass in the yard, only dirt, trees and hostas (and some mugwort) running up a hillside. This is not a groomed yard. When Robin returned home from a trip, the fourth night of our stay, he went out to pee at 12:30am. Immediately, I received several extremely upset emails and an extremely upset phone message (all around 1am). A simple phone call the next morning would have corrected the misunderstanding and I would have quickly complied. The emails continued beyond my apologies. I have replaced the plants that my dog "ruined" and am now hesitant to rent VRBO again. I have had many lovely experiences, but this was stressful and awful. She watched when we came and went, knew when we were running the air conditioner and was worried we were working behind closed blinds. Even after I apologized multiple times and accepted responsibility for misunderstanding, the chastising continued. I couldn't wait to go home. :/
My daughter and I spent 11 wonderful days in Robin's beautiful apartment. It is a charming old fashioned home with traditional and antique furnishings - including Wi-Fi and a flat screen. The apartment is well equipped, very clean and comfortable. Sitting on the couch in the living room, you look out on the water and can see the Statue of Liberty and New York skyline. What a wonderful sight!
We enjoyed preparing breakfast and being able to cook our dinners every day in the well-equipped kitchen. The weather was fantastic during our stay, warm and sunny so we also enjoyed sitting on the outside patio when we returned from our daily trips to Manhattan and all the other beautiful sights.
It is so convenient - the walk from the house to the ferry takes only 10 minutes and the ferry is free, runs every 30 minutes and is a 20-25 minutes ride. Always able to get a seat and have the most awesome/ spectacular views from the ferry. The ferry terminal is close to both subway and bus routes to all points in Manhattan. The subway station is immediately outside the ferry terminal and it couldn't be easier for getting around all the amazing sites of New York. A weekly transport ticket makes travel easy. The bus to the Staten Island Mall stops outside the house. We loved going to the city, but we certainly enjoyed getting back to the peaceful Staten Island.
We have had the most wonderful holiday staying at Robin's and will strongly recommend others to have the opportunity to stay in Robin's gorgeous apartment! From the bottom of our hearts - thank you, Robin.
