Guestbook comments from the manager

Our stay on the Delphinus Houseboat was unusual, enjoyable and memorable! As we expected, the space is compact and functional. Our adult daughter opted for the couch, rather than the tiny sleeping loft, which she would have adored as a child. The bathroom was functional, the kitchen was well equipped, and we enjoyed our morning breakfasts on deck. Does the boat rock? Yes, it does, gently most of the time, it was like sleeping in a waterbed, which my husband had back in the day. When other boats puttered by, the boat did rock more, but it was thrilling, reminding us that we were at sea. Communication with the host was excellent. Our check-in was smooth sailing! Donovan even helped us figure out how to use the DVD player and the coffee maker. The location was fantastic! We loved being so close to the harbor, and near to Fells Point restaurants. What was the best part? Telling everyone at the family party we were attending that we were staying on a houseboat. A great conversation starter!

Delphinus sold....switched us to DRACO A TERRIBLE SUBSTITUTE

  • 1 of 5

We rented the Delphinus but were switched to another boat DRACO.

WHEN FINAL PAYMENT posted to my credit card I notice a charge of 81.00 from Homeaway. This is not website that sent me charges for the boat. After further investigation we were told Homeaway is booking agent for other website. BUYER BEWARE of these up charges. When we arrived at the boat DRACO it looked nothing like the pictures on the website. We tried to talk to representatives from other website and they pretty much said we were being "bullies". I'm a 60 year old woman...really?

We did not stay on the boat...the description of the boat said sleeps 5 which is misleading. We are three women that like each other but prefer to have our own beds. The man that showed the boat to us said the couch was very uncomfortable...so we did not even consider using the couch. We had to book a hotel at the last minute and we are out $624.34 from other website. This does not include $81.00 from Homeaway. We feel totally ripped off and no customer service from either Homeaway or other boat rental website associated with Homeaway. BUYER BEWARE.

Lesson learned...it's all about the money not customer satisfaction!!!!

Owner's Response: This guest was given the opportunity to cancel her reservation, with a full refund, when she was informed that the boat she originally rented had been sold by the boats owner (vs Sleep Afloat who managed the boat for the owner). The first declined this offer. Instead, she chose the second option we offered which was to move to a smaller boat for a reduced price! The guest & her party arrived at the boat & 2 of the 3 person party found in acceptable but 1 did not so they advised the SA site manager they wanted to go have lunch & think about it. This guest called during ‘the lunch’ to express her disappointment by asking for a discounted price & threatening a bad review if we didn’t comply. She refused to acknowledge the offer to cancel or switch to a smaller & less expensive boat even tho our records clearly reveal the offer made by SA. The guest & her party did not return to the boat. A week later the guests husband called to complain & asked for ‘something...anything...a token gesture’ in the form of a refund. The husband informed me he was a Fortune 500 executive & he would ‘smear my reputation online & in social media’ if I did not offer them some amount of refund. I advised the husband to avoid threatening behaviors that intend to harm personal and professional reputations without any factual basis for a dispute. None the less, I advised the SA Reservations office to issue a ‘nuisance’ refund w/agreement by the guests to never rent from SA again & refrain from making negative remarks re SA. This is a blatant example of ‘bad guests’ intent on exploiting the threat of a bad host review if they are not given a discount for unfounded complaints & issues of personal choice & personal accountability No good deed goes unpunished! Cozy houseboat made for an enjoyable weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time on the houseboat. Only one small mechanical problem, but the property manager was literally there within 5 minutes to correct the problem. More enjoyable than a hotel - would highly recommend this experience.

Dismissive Owner

  • 2 of 5

The boat is exactly as pictured, no frills but close to some great restaurants. We were staying for a week and our first two nights were great, head space in the loft was a little tight but exactly what we needed. On the third day we noticed a smell and reported it the next day. While we did get a response right away it was completely dismissive of our complaint. By the fifth day it got so bad that we couldn't be in there any longer and checked out early. The owner refunded us for our one day however insisted that there was no smell. I was staying there with a professional plumber who has been desensitized to say the least to bad smells and he has never smelled anything like this before. The owners instance that there was no smell and blaming it on us was the most frustrating.

Owner's Response: Ungrateful Guest & Gurst Agent: Our local site manager & I went on the boat each of the first two days of this guest's stay, as the guest struggled with the nuance of a houseboat vs a hotel room (as evidenced by misc. comments the guest made other than re an odor) and there was no smell whatsoever. The guests were part of a group & assisted by an agent who came by periodically to gelp them off & on the boat, etc. On the day in question the guests advised my manager they wanted to check out because of an odor. Our first reaction was to advise the guest we had boarded the boat twice & noticed no smell because we both hadn't noticed this smell & because we knew since the check in, that this group member guest was just not happy with being on a houseboat. However, my manager went aboard again and did notice a slight smell & observed the pump out boat servicing our boat & others, which on very hot windless days can generate a brief smell. So we advised the guest's agent that while we did not think the guests 'issues' with our boat were simply because of an odor, we would be happy to credit the guest for a night due to their early check out. The agent did not bother to return our calls for days & days & then finally called apologetically to say that she had indeed received our prompt follow up call, but, hadn't had time to return our call but now wanted to ask for some consideration. We again explained our perspective that these guests had not been comfortable since the day she Che led them in, but, we had been willing to offer them a credit & still would even tho its almost a week later & we do not appreciate it when guests threaten us with bad reviews if we don't make post stay adjustments to their bill re issues we didn't hear about until afterward or get a chance to address. However, we still gave the guest a one night credit without conditions despite our feelings that this was not the 'whole story' for these guests & despite our policy of generally not responding to post stay complaints with requests for discounts & comments regarding a review of our accommodations! No good deed goes unpunished as this ungrateful guest or agent gives us a negative review after being advised we would still offer the credit we first offered at check out even tho it's a week later, and saying 'thanks very much fur your credit & understanding'! Ah, The Good Life

  • 4 of 5

This past weekend, my husband and I stayed at the Delphinus houseboat. We really did not know what to expect because we have never stayed on a houseboat before, but after getting in and looking around at the interior, we could not have been happier.

The site manager, Donovan, was planning to meet us upon our arrival, but we were delayed and were running late. Because Donovan had to leave, he kindly had another gentleman, Dick, meet us and he showed us all we needed to know about the boat.

Yesterday morning, we had to call Donovan to come over as we thought the Keurig Coffee maker was broken - he came right over with a replacement, and then we discovered the problem was something we were doing - but I cannot tell you how appreciative we were to know how promptly he came by. It made us feel good that in case of a REAL emergency :), we could absolutely count on him

It was so nice sitting out on the front porch in the morning, and the back deck in the afternoons - quiet and peaceful is water living. Lots of great places to eat and drink in the Fells Point area, and one day we took the water taxi over to Ft. McHenry - good tour.

I would definitely stay there again and would highly recommend the Delphinus

Unique experience.

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying on the houseboat in the marina at Fells Point. The houseboat was roomy and the area was very safe. Much better than staying in a hotel room. There was a nice porch on the front and back to enjoy the surroundings. Highly recommend staying here if you like a unique experience.

Fun and different anniversary trip

  • 4 of 5

We stayed on this boat for our 25th anniversary trip, the boat was very nice site manager was very helpful. It was hard for me to get used to the motion of the boat but my husband didn't have any problems. Marine toilet was fairly easy to use the shower was tiny, the bed super comfy. Wish there was some dish towels and a drying rack for doing dishes and that the upper deck had been cleaned we wanted to sit out there but the chairs were covered in bird poop. It was very quiet in the marina neighbors were very friendly. The inner harbor is nice but wow was the water filthy.... not much can be done about that but it wasn't pleasant to sit out and watch hypodermic needles and garbage float by. All in all a fun trip but probably wouldn't do it again but not due to any fault of the property.
