We just spent five nights at this amazing property and loved every minute! The owners are fantastic hosts and are super helpful answering questions and helping plan your stay.
We rented the house which has two floors above the ground floor. A deck surrounds the entire lower floor which makes up the kitchen and living room space. The upper floor is the bedroom, shower / restroom and has two decks on either side of the house. There are beautiful views of the sunrise from the upper deck with hammocks on each. Plantation shutters on all of the windows on both floors allows for lots of air circulation. The home is charming with a Caribbean style. Very clean and perfect for a couple. The location and hospitality of the owners make this an awesome place to stay!
Some specific items to note are: The home has low-voltage lighting 24 hrs per day. A 110v generator runs for about 2 hrs a day and is used to charge electronics. No a/c in the home. The stairs to the second floor are very steep like a ladder and requires some care to use. No hot water. The kitchen has a gas stove and a refrigerator for use. There are also additional accommodations on the property for multiple guest which may or may not be occupied during your stay. The ground floor is where the meals are prepared / served and drinks may be purchased. 5 gal drinking water bottle is in the kitchen for use for a small fee. Meal plans are available or meals can be prepared by the guest in the kitchen. It is recommended to specify the desired meal items. Bring lots of sunscreen and mosquito repellent. The caretaker and cook live in a separate house on the property and are always available.
This is a very overdue and difficult review to write, mostly because we want to keep Cayos as our little secret. But that wouldn't be fair.
My fiance and I are frequent seasoned world travelers who regularly seek out unique experiences and destinations off the beaten path. For this particular trip, we were seeking to get away from the concrete jungle of NYC and all the crap that goes along with living amongst 8 million people, to really deeply connect with nature and each other.
It was also my 30th birthday and I had a wish list: beach, turquoise water, hammocks, snorkeling, seclusion, and adventure. We found it all in Cayos Cochinos.
Daryl and Nancy, the property owners, are super stars. Not only do they offer their slice of heaven for others to enjoy, but help to curate an unbeatable experience. From shopping for and transporting our groceries to the island (everything except the fish and lobster which you can purchase from local fishermen) to helping coordinate our arrival, departure, and excursions - we felt completely taken care of. All that was left for us to do was relax and relax and relax some more.
The island itself is Cayo Largo Arriba (Upper Long Cay) in the Cayos Cohinos chain. There are three homesteads on the island. Daryl and Nancy's sits on the top end. In other words - you have your own island. There is also an uninhabited cay you can wade to just to the north.
There are several sleeping options and we stayed in the main house. Being set up with our own kitchen was perfect as we love to cook. Having our own decks and hammocks was priceless and the space also had a shower and toilet en suite.
Lola is half island caretaker and half the grandmother you've always wanted. For those who stay in the suites without a kitchen she does what cooking is required. For us, she provided tips and tricks on how to prepare the perfect lobster and snapper and make fresh tropical fruit juices.
Our one day off island was spent touring the other cays in the chain (including a Garifuna village) and snorkeling the reef. Our tour guide and his son were incredibly kind.
Logistically, getting to Cayos was quite easy. We flew into Roatan and ferried to La Ceiba for an overnight. On the way back we overnighted in Roatan before our flight the next day.
There really is just too much I could share about this amazing experience. You'll have to make it your own to find out how special Cayos truly is.
