We will be leaving "The Hideaway" in a couple of days and just wanted to tell you we have had a wonderful restful vacation. We want to particularly pass along our compliments for Reynold. All his assistance, providing us fresh seafood and generally being available to answer all our questions, has been invaluable. You have a real gem in having him care for your property.
We spent two adventure-filled weeks at the Hideaway with two families 4 adults and 4 children ages 11-17. The house is on an amazing secluded piece of coastline and upon arrival you immediately sense how special it is. The house was as described and everything worked well . The owner was very helpful in advance of our trip, helping with logistics and questions. One of our main reasons for choosing this house was to have close proximity to good reefs for snorkeling. The snorkeling in front of the house was as good as anything we found along the south shore of Cat Island, we regularly spotted eagle rays, large barracudas, turtles, various reef fish and had observations of a nurse and reef shark. The house provided a great base for exploring the rest of the island too which has dozens of isolated and interesting places to visit. The house is probably most suitable for 4-6 people in terms of sleeping and eating, but if you are good with air mattresses and not eating all together than it works for 8 just fine. The doors of the house were challenging to lock and the windows had severe condensation between the panes which is part of the reality of ocean front house maintenance in a remote Bahamian location. The house and Cat Island is probably best suited for those in search of a travel experience as a vacation and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something off the beaten track. Hope to return again one day.
My husband and I just had a 10 day vacation and stayed at the Hide Away. It is just that! We loved every minute of our stay. The house is very nice, clean and well equipped. The tiki hut by the beach is wonderful. I even had a massage therapist, Sheila, give me a massage under the tiki hut. She also makes amazing homemade bread. We only had 3 people to walk past our house in 10 days. It is definitely secluded and just what we wanted. This was our 3rd year in a row to vacation at Cat Island. We love this place and will return next year to the same house! Be prepared to be without phone service and internet from time to time. Cat Island looses service often. We had a rental car everyday and visited lots of places on the island. Fernandez Bay is a nice place to eat and also Shanna's Cove. The food, service, and company are great at both places. The locals are so friendly and helpful. You can actually feel safe here. It's not like any other place. Be sure and pick coconuts and mangos from the trees on the side of the road. They are wonderful. We feel truly blessed to have found this piece of paradise and we thank the Jenkins for sharing it with us.
The name Hideaway is very apt. The views are stunning. We were the only ones on the beach which is completely private. The owner and caretaker are both very helpful. The house was clean and well furnished and the listing photos accurately reflect the rental's appearance.
The main store we used is about 20 minutes away as is the gas station. Fernandez Bay where we ate several times is delightful. That also is about half an hour away from the house.
Beaches are lovely. For the most part deserted. Cat island is one of our favourite 'Family Islands'
There are some good bakeries on the island. The caretaker's wife baked good bread for us. There is also a church minister/school teacher who comes round once a week with a van full of vegetables and fruit and the owner's manager got us some good fish.
I would certainly recommend the house to other people seeking peace and quiet. We enjoyed our visit and look forward to returning.
My husband and his family used to live on Cat Island back in the late 80s. His parents were missionaries and had 6 kids! His memories of the island are vivid and he wanted to return. This house was exactly what i wanted: comfortable, modern, and private. The boys enjoyed spear fishing every day right by the house and the girls enjoyed the fresh fish entrees every night! We brought spices for the fish with us because they are quite expensive on the island. The view is breathtaking whether you sit on the beach or the deck. We went to Fernandez Bay one night for dinner and the ambiance was perfect for a romantic date night. We also visited the Kingdom Hall (30-45 min away from the house--the Bahamians didn't have a building in which to meet when my inlaws lived on Cat so many years ago, they met in private homes) and it was delightful to meet members of the same worldwide organization. It was like visiting family. If you are looking for a place to wind down from your normal chaotic routine this secluded house on beautiful Cat Island is ideal. I was able to read a novel I've always wanted to read in the most exquisite surroundings imaginable and experience serenity and peace you can only dream about. We can't wait to return!
My wife and I had been saving up for our honeymoon for 4 years. We had some specific requirements and they were met almost perfectly with this house. And the "almost" was a blessing in disguise. We wanted a private beach that we could walk out on from the house. Kayaks, snorkling, and tanning. Plus we wanted to be undisturbed but still have a nice tv and internet. We got everything but the internet. That was the blessing in disguise. Not having wifi (dial up was available but to slow to waste any time on) forced us to turn off our phones and computers and enjoy the paradise before us, it forced us to really relax. But the big screen tv came in nice at night to watch a movie before bed. The kitchen is fantastic and should be nice for anyone who wants and likes to cook. However, Reynold and his family also make outstanding meals. We had the seafood the first night and there was enough for left overs the next day and it was really really good. (Definitely ask for the rum cake. Best. Ever.). Reynold also brought us kayaks to use and it was worth it. The privacy is almost scary at night realizing how alone it feels, but looking up at the stars (and we lucked out with a full moon) without any nearby light pollution was heavenly. The cherry on top of this vacation is that I thought we might have been the first renters here because everything was so clean and seemed new and unused. I was surprised to learn that we were not and they've had quite a few renters. This was the perfect honeymoon for us. But the house is perfect for a family with kids too. We can't wait to return when our kids are old enough to enjoy the beach on their own for a week long family vacation in a few years.
