Photos and Description of this 6 bedroom holiday home in Lostanges - Dordogne Holiday home

Large hilltop house in 2 acres of land sleeping 10 in 6 bedrooms

Stone house with private pool, patio, terrace in two acres of garden, with a fabulous 270 degree panorama and views to the cliffs of the Dordogne. Peaceful location on top of a hill. Sleeps 10 in three double, one twin and two single bedrooms, two shower rooms, dishwasher, washer, dryer. “We were very happily surprised by the magnificent house and brilliant view… Really, a perfect holiday”. £400-1100 per week. Normally Saturday to Saturday bookings. Great for one (or more) families.

More details...There is one large double room (see photos), one other double room and a room with a double sofa bed. There is a downstairs room with two single beds. There are two single bedrooms - with room to bed down on an air mattress if you need more room. There are two shower rooms. There is a living room and a kitchen. In summer much activity occurs on the outside, shaded, terrace which has great views (see photos). The pool is about 6 by 3.5 metres in length. There is carpet upstairs and tiles downstairs. The house has central heating - but this will not be required for typical rentals.

We use the house ourselves and have three boys - so it is not completely pristine! We trust you will find it clean and comfortable - but it is not a Four Seasons hotel! We have a dishwasher, washer, dryer, and the house is generally fully kitted out with the necessaries and various games and toys.

We own the land around the house which is grazed by sheep periodically to keep the grass down. You are free to roam around. We have a small garden around the pool with a supply of herbs.

Our (English) neighbor takes care of the property and is extremely capable, being a builder and farmer who also rents his own properties - so any issue can normally be dealt with quickly. On request they may be able to sell you home grown produce at very reasonable rates.

The location is between Brive and Beaulieu, up in the hills but only 20 minutes from the Dordogne river. There are many sites within easy striking distance and there is great walking all around. We can provide more information if you email us at jo.whitehead@ashridge.org.uk. Some typical sites nearby are Collanges la Rouge, Curemont, Beaulieu sur Dordogne and the river itself. Within an hour you can find Turenne, Rocamadur, the Gouffre de Padirac, Chateau de Castlenaud, Soulliac and numerous pretty villages and caves. A little further afield you can get to Lascaux, Sarlat and the heart of the Dordogne (we are to the East). Local activities include tennis, kayaking, golf, horse riding. There is lots of swimming, walking and bird watching.

We can arrange for sheet and towel hire if required.

We can provide some reviews of previous visitors if required (this is our first year on this site). Typical comments are that the views are magnificent and it is an extremely relaxing location, with plenty to do. The house is comfortable and the kind of place a family can hang out and relax. The pool is a great asset during the summer. We seem to have very happy customers in general!

About Jo Whitehead

We live in Cambridge but have lived for over 10 years in the US. I am now an academic although I was in business. My wife is a doctor and the three boys are rapidly growing up.

Jo Whitehead purchased this house in 1989

Why Jo Whitehead chose Brive la Gaillarde area

We love our French family home - bought over 25 years ago. The area is beautiful and the house has a unique location - perched up on a hill with wonderful views. There is lots to do - but if you don't want to do much that is fine too!

What makes this house unique

Peaceful, great views, lovely countryside - the French rural idyll. Lots of things to do nearby but the house is a lovely retreat at the end of a busy day.

There are lots of medieval villages and sites as this area was very wealthy when the economy was based on agriculture. There are plenty of prehistoric sites including the famous caves of Lascaux. We can provide more details of the many sites to visit.

Although this is a rural holiday, there are things for the kids to do. Kayaking, swimming, horse riding, tennis, pizza restaurants, table tennis, searching for preying mantis, picnics, and kicking a ball around are things we have done with our boys over the years. There are also some more touristy things such as caves, water parks, and dinosaur parks (models only!). However, it is probably not the best location for night clubs or theme parks!

Local delicacies include fois gras, duck and goose products, mushrooms, walnuts and walnut oil, a bit of wine, goats cheese as well as all that France has to offer in general.

The Dordogne river is nearby and offers swimming and kayaking. It is spectacular with towering cliffs in places. There is tons of walking and hiking for those interested.

Most visitors comment on the view which is spectacular and provides a daily sense of well-being. It is hard to capture in photos. Watching the sun cycle round during the day and then the bright stars come out is a great way to unwind! There is very little traffic as we are off the beaten track and on the edge of a very sleepy village. The house is taken care of by our (British) neighbour who lives in the farm behind us. He and his wife are wonderful and can sell you their produce at very good prices. Very tasty eggs and try the vegetables too. The house is somewhat basic - you should get a sense of the decor from the photos. Perfectly adequate but definitely a family home (we have three boys). We are just north of the Dordogne river and there are plenty of tourist sites and things to do, covered in many guides. We personally like the walking, swimming and kayaking and supplement this with trips to sites and pretty villages.
