The Bamboo house is not your typical vacation house experience - it is for true adventure seekers, who want to immerse themselves into the surroundings, and have an amazing time doing it! If you want a cookie cutter resort getaway, then this may not be the place for you. The easiest way to describe this house is like you are in a surreal tree house with all the amenities for you and your family or friends to have a memorable adventure. I celebrated my 30th birthday here with 9 of my best friends and it exceeded our expectations. The house itself is easily accessible, with a fun bike ride to the city, or a short walk to the beach, bars and restaurants. The lot that it sits in however, is perfect because it offers privacy and relaxation with the house overlooking the lagoon. It is entirely surrounded by a tall bamboo fence, and the bottom level offers an amazing area to grill, play volleyball, basketball or ping-pong, or just relax under the hut in a daybed or hammock while you fish for fun, There are a couple of nicely set up rooms on the bottom floor, and a separate hut with it's own AC which is detached - and makes for a great experience. The second level contains the large kitchen/living room, and 2 bedrooms. By far the best part of this level is the deck. It is setup with chairs, a pool (great for after a hot bike ride), and a table for dinner or drinks while enjoying the sun, sunset, or stars overlooking the water. The prime spot by far is the hammock on this level! Inside the kitchen offers a microwave, gas stove, and refrigerator - and has everything you need for making meals - if they are not being made for you! The living room portion of the room offers comfy daybed type seating, AC, fans, and a TV which is nice, but we only used it once on a rainy night. The top level offers the best view, and has a constant warm breeze blowing, to the point that AC really isn't required! Hammocks, a day bed a chairs make it the ideal place to watch sunrises and sunsets, read a good book, or enjoy the morning air with a cup of coffee.
This house should be viewed as an amazing, and well run base-camp of adventure. All the staff are amazingly friendly and go out of their way to make sure everybody is having an amazing time. We set up cave tubing, zip-lining, fishing, snorkeling and a beach barbecue with a private tour guide Selvin - who works closely with the bamboo house staff. We are already planning our next trip back to the bamboo house - it's an adventure.
There were many things we did not know about before arriving at the Bamboo House, they are NOT on the reef (east) side of the island, so there is no ocean swimming or beach to hang out at. They are on the lagoon side which is too dangerous to swim in, and you can't even get close to the water. The house is old and run down. You have to buy all your own paper products, including toilet paper which cannot be thrown in the toilet. The Master bedroom is on the top floor and the shower/toilet is not private, completely open to the bedroom, very uncomfortable. When it rains, which is did every night while we were there, the rains leaks through the windows and doors, so there was always water on the floor of every room. We all slipped on the wet surfaces daily. The only rooms with luke warm water for showering were the three rooms above ground level. The ground level bedrooms were miserable, the one closest to the lagoon smelled of sewage and the couple in that room had to burn insense to deal with the smell. They also had water dripping on their heads from the thatched roof. If we would have known any of this, we would never have booked this place. So, three bedrooms with couples in them had to come to the upstairs bedrooms to take a luke warm shower. The toilet seat in the master bedroom was broken, lots of things were falling apart. The bedroom on the kitchen level had a air conditioner that was shooting sparks and finally died, they were afraid it would catch on fire. There was no sign of improvement and kitchen was lacking many essential equipment, 1 burner on stove did not work, so food could only be prepared two pots or pans at a time. For the amount of money we paid nightly this place is a rip-off. This house is located north of "the bridge" which will charge you $5 american every time your pass over the bridge. The pictures on this website are very deceiving, there are NO jet skis, NO boat, NO paddle boards, NO beach access, and NO swimming in the ocean like the pictures show. The bicycles were available, but they do not have fenders so as you pass over puddles be prepared to get wet and muddy. You have to buy your own condiments, water, paper products, and ice. The refrigerator barely worked and it did NOT make ice. There is NO washer and dryer as most rental units have. It was a miserable week at this property. There were mosquitos every day. I would NOT recommend this property to anyone, it is dangerous and falling apart.
13 of us spent a wonderful week in Belize at Bamboo House. We loved Belize and felt that we experienced many different parts of Belize in the week we had there. Edwin was a welcoming host and available for questions and to take us grocery shopping in San Pedro. It took us about 2 days to figure out how this house worked. Our cook seemed new to Bamboo House. Meals she cooked were fine but she had trouble giving us a grocery list of what items she would need to cook our meals. Of course, we knew that we would pay for our food but we did not realize that we would have to grocery shop if we wanted to eat at our home away from home. Edwin would take us grocery shopping in town but that would count as one of our two allowed trips a day in the golf cart that held 3 persons other than Edwin. It would take us about 1 to 2 hrs to grocery shop every day. Once we understood how to manage those trips, it became much easier. Housekeeping was great. Rooms were cleaned daily. However, bath towels were in short supply. A room housing 4 persons got 2 towels or most of the 2 person rooms had one towel. Believe me, in July, with the heat, showers are a welcome end to a sweaty day. A towel a person would have been nice. Neither was there enough pillows for the 13 of us. Selvin was the tour guide that you can hire to take your group on day trips. He was super, informative and helped make our stay really memorable. What we did not know is that he does not take a credit card. So bring cash (lots) because he is really worth the cost and less expensive than you will find otherwise. Everyone loved the tours. There were many things at Bamboo House that were not working. 4 jet ski's, 0 fly boards, the motor boat, and the CD player all were not working and have not worked for a long time, so we were told. When you arrive with 6 teens as we did, and the teens see the jet ski's and motor boat as soon as they enter the grounds, their disappointment was palpable when they found out these were all broken. Know that you cannot enter the water from the lagoon side where the house sits. They feed a crocodile the food scraps so he/she sits under the house waiting for a bite of food (food waste or you!!). The ocean is not far, but the lagoon is so beautiful and right there that it is a shame not to have an entry into it from the house. If you understand this at the get-go, then you won't be disappointed. Bamboo House has a lot to offer if you can go with the flow.
We just returned from our vacation to Ambergris Island. The Bamboo House reminded us of our cottage in Ontario. It has everything you need to be comfortable, but is still rustic enough.
Our group of 13 only had one complaint really, and that was the fact that there was no hot water for the showers. A hot shower would have been sooooo nice to remove the day's sunscreen and sweat.
The owners/hosts were nice and informative as to what we should see and do on the island or mainland.
If you like having pets around, their 2 dogs and Balu the cat are good company while lounging on the many decks or playing ping pong in the lower Palapa.
The staff are great. Camilla made us some really yummy meals. Edwin was always available to run out and pick up something up for us or run an errand. The rooms were attended to daily - house keeping was good and the grounds were kept nicely as well.
Summary: If you want 5 star, this is not it. But, whatever it's downfalls and quirkiness; was a fun place to stay. Good location, nice people, very safe, and has everything you need for a relaxing stay.
Nice to meet you Bertrand, Kimberley and Noah, and to the rest of the staff at Bamboo house, Ambergris Caye.
Just got back from an incredible trip to Belize and loved our stay at Bamboo House! The house is amazing - 3 stories and just so beautiful. Tons of room, amazing views and a super helpful and kind staff. Kimberly helped us arrange our travel to the island and helped with a lot of our getting around once we were there. She was always available and super helpful not to mention so friendly and pleasant. House was cleaned daily and always pristine. The location was perfect - walking distance from several great bars and restaurants and very close to San Pedro while being on the more laid back side north of the bridge. Plus, the house comes with a large number of bikes so we were able to bike into town and take lovely rides north of us. Not that you even want to leave the house sometimes. Tons of comfy outdoor lounging and hammocks everywhere. We saw spectacular sunsets over the lagoon from the third floor and a double rainbow one afternoon! Beach side is a very short walk. Every room came with water coolers which was very handy - we did not have to buy bottled water. Some guests reported issues with the wireless but ours worked perfectly the whole time. It's an excellent value if you have a large group. I would definitely stay here again - the location is just so convenient and the house is a beautiful sanctuary. I highly recommend it!
Our stay at the Bamboo house was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone who is reading this review. The owner and his staff truly care about their guests and work very hard to accommodate their needs. The location has plenty of space for a family or group of friends to relax and take in the Belizean sun. Located just north of downtown San Pedro and south of some boutique resorts, the house is centrally located and it is easy to get every place on the island that you want to go.
I would recommend flying from Belize City to San Pedro. It is a short flight, and the owner of the house was able to help set it up. He also recommended a tour guide that took our group on 3 days of fun adventures. The staff was kind, and they were always willing to accommodate our needs. Everything was always very clean and the meals were delicious.
In another review there is the mention of no hot water and no beach. While this place might not be located on the beach, it is located on the lagoon where you are able to catch some great sunsets. As far as the hot water, the last thing I wanted to do after being outside all day was take a warm shower. The cool shower was refreshing.
I would recommend this place to anyone. The owner/staff are great, the location is great, and the house itself is amazing!
