Romantic Steiner Log Cabin at Mt Hood, Oregon's playground for skiing & hiking

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6-8)

Dancing Bear Log Cabin is a beautifully preserved example of the Steiner Log Cabins that are unique to the Mt Hood Area in Oregon, and a highly valued piece of its history. Steiner is well known for having also worked on the construction of Timberline Lodge. This vintage, three bedroom, one bath cabin is located on historic Barlow Trail nestled next to Hackett Creek. Let the creek lull you to sleep as it babbles under your window-- backing to a canopy of old growth fir trees and whispy alders. Cross the creek on a wooden bridge to your own private picnic area where you can toast marshmellows by the outdoor firepit or play a friendly game of horseshoes at the horseshoe pit. The back deck overlooks Hackett Creek and the woods and there is a private creekside hot tub. The authenticity of this home has been carefully maintained, and the furnishings artfully capture the period in keeping with the spirit of the 1930's era. The master bedroom has a queen log bed with luxurious Pendleton Woolen Mills bedding, rustic light fixtures and furnishings. The guest bedroom offers a double bed. On the main level you'll find a third bedroom with a day bed/trundle and a second TV/VCR. Two futon sofas in the living room provide extra sleeping space. The massive stone fireplace provides warmth and a feel for what our beautiful Mt. Hood area must have been like back in the day. Romance, charm and a warm fire await you at this lovely home. This is a great place to experience Mt Hood from an historical perspective. Sleeps up to 6 adults in beds, with living room futon for additional sleeping space.

About Jeanne Paul

We live in the Portland area and have vacationed at the cabin for over 12 years with our sons…skiing, hiking and taking in all that the Mt Hood national forest has to offer. There is no better place to enjoy everything that Oregon has to offer.

Jeanne Paul purchased this cabin in 1999

Why Jeanne Paul chose Mount Hood Village

We've enjoyed Mt Hood for over 45 years--especially the year round skiing at Timberline Lodge where they have one of the nations only glaciers offering summer skiing (and they host the US Ski Team). My parents honeymooned at Timberline Lodge in the 1950's.

In the summer months we boat and swim in one of the many mountain lakes (our favorite is Trillium Lake) and we frequent the miles and miles of hiking trails--a family favorite being the Mirror Lake Hike. Pack a lunch and eat along the lake or continue up to Tom, Dick and Harry ridge for amazing views of the cascade range. The kids enjoy the Wildwood Park Trail with interactive displays beaver dam and underwater view of the river.

Our cabin feels like it's remote, but it's only an hour from Portland, 10 minutes from charming Sandy Oregon, and 20 minutes to some of the best skiing Oregon has to offer.

What makes this cabin unique

After a good hike we love to relax on our deck by the babbling Hacket creek, fire up the barbeque and then enjoy a game of horseshoes on the deck. Our ritual includes at least one dinner at Burro Loco for a little Mexican food, and a breakfast at the Barlow Trail Inn. For special occasions we treat ourselves to a meal at Rondezvous --they never disappoint. Or if we're up at Timberline lodge for a historic tour and hike we make it a point to enjoy the world-class brunch (YUM).

Guestbook comments from the manager

loved the craftsman expertise, the Steiner history book , all the perfect TLC touches. Adored the deck, bridge and creeks beyond. The fact that the owners share this is a gift to us".

A very special place no one should miss :)

We spent our honeymoon at Dancing Bear Cabin. This cabin and the setting was exactly what we were looking for. Rustic, cozy, chill, wooded, with a fireplace and hot tub and close to Mt. Hood. On top of that, it is a historical cabin built by John Steiner in 1938. Steiner was a master craftsman that built several cabins in the area and he helped build Timberline Lodge. This man was incredible and very skilled and you get to see it first hand staying here.

The cabin is stunning and has been taken very good care of. The decor is so clever and fun (hint: bears). There's a lot to do on the property with the deck and bridge out back settled over Hackett Creek, and a natural, wooded area across the bridge to have a bonfire, explore or throw some horseshoes. A well kept hot tub, grill and shed with firewood in the side yard. The inside amenities were perfect as well. The rooms were so cute and had very comfortable beds. We were amazed at how complete the kitchen was and had everything you need to cook. I cannot say enough about this little piece of rustic heaven. The owner Jeanne is so kind and very helpful with any questions or suggestions for what to do in the area. We will definitely be making several trips to Dancing Bear Cabin. We're smitten :)

Tip: Take the tour inside at Timberline Lodge. It was so interesting and made our stay so much more special. Lotta history to preserve! Enjoy :)

Classic, Historic Steiner Cabin.

  • 5 of 5

If you want a taste of Mt. Hood history then Dancing Bear Cabin is perfect. This was so original throughout the entire cabin. Loved the history of the Steiner cabin, and the Steiner legacy on Mt. Hood. The decor was so perfect for this classic NW period authentic experience. We all really enjoyed the sound of the rushing creek, and a star filled night in the hot tube. A great way to stay and enjoy the Mt. Hood area.

This is a quintessential cabin, like you are stepping into a story book. Our 3 year old especially loved all of the bear decor all over the house. The hosts have thought of all the details a guest might need, from towels for the hot-tub to a well-equipped kitchen. My only tip for future guests would be to put your GPS on to find it. It's on a main road, but it's easy to drive past the driveway in the dark.

The Dancing Bear Cabin was just what we were hoping for. Perfect cabin in the woods.

  • 5 of 5

We spent my birthday weekend with my family at Dancing Bear cabin and it was perfect. The cabin is somehow magically preserved in time, like we stumbled into the 3 bears cottage. And still it functions beautifully. The tiny bathroom worked for us- everything was set up so well. Although the cabin is not huge, the 6 of us fit easily and it felt roomy. We loved sitting in the kitchen dining area and looking out at the creek. And sitting in the living room by the fire in the evening and morning playing games and reading. The beds were comfy and easily accommodated the 6 of us. The bedroom downstairs is quite small with a twin daybed but the trundle does pop up and makes it into a king size bed, if that’s what is needed. And although it is off the living room, and without a official door, (which just wouldn’t fit) it does have a heavy curtain over the door. It felt quite private to us. The cabin is so well insulated with its thick log walls that we barely needed any heat. And the kitchen has everything you need to make full meals. Although there’s a very small fridge in the kitchen there is another full size one on the back porch area- so plenty of room for perishables. There were even some staples like sugar and salt and some spices. During the day we went for a wonderful hike to Hidden Lake- magical walking through a snow dusted forest up into a very snowy pond area. It had some steep areas on the 2 mile one way trail but overall a medium challenging hike. And on Sunday after a yummy breakfast at the cute Barlow Trail Roadhouse, we went looking for snow for a x-country ski. Found some decent snow at Meadows Nordic Center. Such a warm winter we’re having! We had a wonderful time and would love to go back in the summer to enjoy the lovely deck and the woods nearby where I’m certain we would find dancing bears and fairies!
