About Ian Martell

A resident of Eureka for 23 years, I am a life-long resident of Greenwood County, Kansas. Currently employed by the City of Eureka, it is my goal to help improve our rural Flint Hills community whenever I can. By offering this humble place to stay I hope to be able to showcase our peaceful way of life in small town rural America.

Ian Martell purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Ian Martell chose Eureka

I've been in Kansas all my life. Suffered through a lot of Wizard of Oz jokes but it's home. The Cottage was my Mother's home till she moved to assisted living. The Rental income helps pay her monthly expenses.

What makes this cottage unique

If you are from anywhere other than small town America, the pace of life here will be unlike anything you have experienced. You will find this a friendly town where strangers say hi, give accurate directions and lend a hand if you need help. It's a place where when the UPS guy leaves a package on your front porch and it's still there when you get home from work. As evening settles in it's quiet enough to hear cows outside of town lowing to their calves and it's easy to pick out the unique sound of the gas engine on the oil well to the North of town. Long lines do not exist here. If I go to the bank drive in and there are more than two cars at the window I come back later. Safe, peaceful, quiet, that's Eureka. That's The Cottage.

Eureka! I found it! Best little vacation home in Kansas!

  • 5 of 5

My children and I absolutely LOVED this place! I'd still be there if no one was renting it :-) ha ha. We stayed here for almost 2 months. It was so clean, the decor is gorgeous - warm, earthy tones, and the cottage has literally has anything you need while on vacation. I can't think of anything I needed while there that was provided. The setting is absolutely beautiful! It's located on a peaceful, very quiet little street on the outskirts of Eureka. You look out the kitchen window and see a country pasture. I used to love to wash dishes and watch my kids playing out in the field and feeding the neighbors horse across the fence. We took just about daily walks, enjoying the country setting, seeing the cows down the road, another horse, etc. We enjoyed getting to Mr. Martell as well - he would come and mow the grass. Any time I texted him about anything, he responded within minutes, never more than 30. He brought over a basketball hoop and my kids had a blast playing in the driveway, shooting hoops.

The cottage is about 5 to 7 miles away from Eureka Lake... a gorgeous place to go! We walked down to the library and G&W grocery store several times (it's about a mile there and back, so walking may not be for everyone). If you were to drive, it's about 2 minutes, maybe 2 and a half minutes :-) There's a Dollar General, Pizza Hut, Copper Kettle, Benny's, Sonic, and some other little diners. There's a hospital. A few great little thrift stores! Something super cool... they have a drive-thru liquor store! How neat is that?!

The cottage has WI-FI and a T.V. I'm not really a T.V. person, so I don't think we watched any at all. BUT....I did plug my computer into it and we watched a couple of movies on the "big screen!" That was fun!

I'm trying to think of some kind of constructive criticism, but I can't think of anything. I'm not a picky person in general, so...that doesn't help. But, really. Even if there were a few things I might have come across or needed...???...like I mentioned earlier - I'd text and almost immediately get an answer!

To be honest, I just couldn't ask for a more quaint, quiet, homey vacation home. It was just perfect for us. I met neighbors - they were great! It's just a beautiful, peaceful get-away, for sure! I think I could grow old on that front porch. A glass of lemonade and sunsets to die for....aaaahhhhh! I truly can't say enough good things about this cottage. I am so grateful that the owners allowed us to stay here!

Felt Like Being at Home

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the Cottage during my recent hunting trip to Kansas. Like others have said it was clean and comfortable. Owner was responsive on questions...a true hidden gem. Look forward to visiting again next year.

Great little house.

  • 5 of 5

This place has everything you need for a stay in Eureka Kansas. Cable, WIFI and everything is fully stocked, all you need is food and drink and personal items. Very nice and comfortable. Bed rooms are a little bright in the morning but if you are a early riser no problem. All and all a very nice place to stay.

Eureka is located in the heart of cattle country in the midst of the renowned Tall Grass Prairie. Cowboy hats, boots, and spurs are still common here but not required attire. Small town rural America, Eureka could be described more by what it doesn't have. Characterized by the absence of crowds, noise, long lines, pollution, heavy traffic, and crime, Eureka is a quiet and safe place to stay.

Drive the hills Northwest of town and see cattle country little changed from the late 1800's. Plan your stay in April and you will be able watch as local ranchers burn the prairie on quiet spring evenings. These controlled burns renew the grass in a ritual reflecting nature that dates back literally thousands of years. Enjoy Party In The Park on the 4th of July in a town where almost all fireworks are still legal for the public to shoot.

Book in August and attend the Greenwood County PRCA sanctioned rodeo. Be here on the first Saturday in November and help us celebrate CattleMens Day with a parade, barbeque and more.

For some of the best fishing in the state, Lake Eureka, 5 mi North of town, is available with a valid Kansas fishing license. No local license is required to fish. A City license is required to ski or recreate upon the water other than fishing. Also close by, both Fall River and Toronto reservoirs are a 20-30 min. drive.

Or just kick back on the porch and enjoy the peace and quiet.
