Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 10

No vehicle access in Winter Season. Come up for an adventure. This beautiful cabin sits on the bank of a rushing stream on a large private lot. On one side it looks into a forest with old growth trees . On the other side, the view is of a sunny area with lodge pole pines and huckleberry bushes. It is in the Trillum Lake / Summit Meadow area, in a small settlement of homes, totally surrounded by national forest but close-in to Government Camp amenities. This is a place to enjoy peace and the natural world.

The location is a mecca for those who love cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and tranquility. In winter, there can be 12 compacted feet of snow on the ground burying the windows of two of the bedrooms in a sheet of white while the winter views from the main floor are spectacular.

In summer, sitting out on the covered porch, the sound of the stream is a joy hear. A quick walk takes you into Summit Meadow with its gorgeous flowers and one of the best views of Mt. Hood. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the out of doors. For those that want to paddle or fish, the boat launch at Trillum Lake can be reached in ten minutes. There are hiking trails and gravel roads offering mountain biking opportunities.

Winter access is limited to skis or snowshoes. Most guests park in the parking lot across from the Timberline lodge cut-off and come in along the groomed ski /snowshoe trail that starts there. The cabin is 1 ¼ miles down the trail. The beginning of the trail down is steep, so many guests will want to snowshoe in.

Summer access is by vehicle after the Forest Service is satisfied that the road is adequately cleared of snow. The road in is also closed prior to the first major snowstorm. So guests coming in during the months of November through May need to be prepared to get in without a vehicle, although some years it is possible to get in during November and May. If you can’t drive-in, you can access the cabin along a gorgeous trail through a deep, beautiful forest or walk down the peaceful closed road.

Once you reach the cabin, you will find a very comfortable home filled with beautifully finished wood and many interesting artifacts from the 100 some years that the Marshall family has enjoyed family-owned cabins in this area. This cabin, built in 1996, has a living room, kitchen and dining room that are open to each other, providing a nice venue for relaxing and enjoying a fire in the wood stove.

The kitchen is well equipped and has counter space for several cooks. It looks out over the stream.

The master bedroom, with a queen bed, has a lovely view out over the stream and its cathedral ceiling gives it an airy feeling.

The two downstairs bedrooms (queen in one and queen + twin in the other) have very large windows and views out over the stream, until snow builds up too high to see out.

The loft area (leave the door open to heat) is a great place for kids. It has 1 queen bed,1 full bed and two twins. The door to the loft area is locked off for smaller parties but will be opened up for 7 guests or more. It can also be available, on request, for parties of 4-6 who need it, but for small parties there will be an additional $30 cleaning fee, in addition to the any normal extra guest charge and cleaning fee, paid with your reservation.

While you may not want to use it given the sense of tranquility and peace this home offers, there is wifi, so you can stay connected if you want to. Please call us with questions you might have about this truly unique property.

Without prior discussion and agreement by the owners, this special property is limited to no more than 6 adults or 10 total guests including children.

Reviewer Comments:

Nestled away in woods next to a babbling brook, this cabin was the perfect place to unwind and decompress. Yet it was still close enough to Government Camp to pop in for groceries and a stones throw from Trillium lake and an array of trailheads for hiking. The cabin was immaculate and well appointed with everything we needed to cook or grill. And the fire ring outside was the ideal congregating area for smore making. Just loved it. Would certainly stay again. Highly recoomended!

Reviewer Comments:

We were pleasantly surprised with this cabin. It was very clean, well supplied, spacious and offered a ton of sleeping options. The backyard fire ring with plenty of firewood was awesome and it was fun to sit on the porch and listen to the creek near the cabin. We didn’t think the photos in the VRBO ad did the place justice, as it was much nicer and offered more amenities than expected. We’d highly recommend this cabin.

Reviewer Comments:

Great cabin, well appointed. Comfortable. Nice location, a bit remote, but not too remote. Be aware the upstairs bed area is not normally accessible unless you precoordinate with property managers. Without the upstairs, you only have 4 beds. The upstairs adds another 4 beds. Highly recommend. Be sure to read the history and stories in the binder written by Mr Marshall, one of the owners, very historically interesting.

Reviewer Comments:

We trekked back into the snow with kids, a dog, and a hardy group of adults. Super pleased at how accommodating and well appointed the property is. Everything you need is there. The layout is super for a small group or big family, with lots of beds and places to sit. We never felt crowded. Two and a half feet of snow fell while we were there - we couldn't have gotten much luckier. Digging the cars out at the end of the weekend was a chore, but gladly suffered, for the opportunity to spend a weekend at Marshall Cabin.

A group of us spent the weekend here over MLK weekend. While there wasn't a lot of snow, we still had a wonderful weekend hiking to/from the cabin, circling Trillium Lake and enjoying the cabin. The cabin was very comfortable and well appointed. The kitchen had all of the supplies we needed, the beds were comfy and there was a good selection of games. We had issues with the internet but it didn't bother us. I would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a mountain getaway with family or friends. We look forward to returning next year.

Reviewer Comments:

Staying at Marshall Cabin during New Year's week is the perfect anecdote to the craziness we all experience in the days and weeks leading up to Christmas. It is peaceful, serene and relaxing. We also get a good daily workout skiing in and out to go to Trillium lake, Timberline Lodge or Government Camp. But mostly I love to feed the wildlife, watch them enjoy their treats and feel the spirit of David Marshall, a dedicated conservationist and naturalist. Thanks for this wonderful opportunity to commune with spirit of nature.
