Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1.5 Bathroom, Sleeps 4

An intact 1880 farm on 55 acres of open rolling pastures. There is a small stream named Walnut Run that traverses the entire property.

Walnut Run Farm is 80 miles from Washington DC and just 10 miles from Skyline Drive and the hiking trails of Shenandoah National Park.

What makes Walnut Run Farm so special is the farm's location. The house is perfectly sited in a small bowl along a little stream. The farm is intact with a barn, smoke house, spring house, well pump and storage shed. Visiting the farm is like stepping back in time. It is an exceptionally serene rural setting.

The house is clean, quiet and minimally decorated. There are two bedrooms. There is a queen bed in the master bedroom and two twin beds in the second bedroom. The kitchen is fully stocked and there is a large library of classical literature. There is a living room with a baby grand piano and a studio that opens onto a 50 foot screened porch. A perfect getaway to enjoy peace, beauty, and privacy.

I am fighting like mad to save this farm and every guest stay helps me protect this beautiful property. Thanks!

Notes:
What makes Walnut Run Farm so special is its location. The house is spectacularly sited. Whoever initially built the house tucked it away in the hills along a private stream. There is a half-mile drive up to the house and the nearest neighbor is about a half-mile away. There is privacy, quiet and beauty. In this crazy world it offers a unique peaceful sanctuary away from everything. Walnut Farm is also surprisingly intact. Not much has changed in the one hundred and forty years since it was built. There is a smoke house, a barn, a spring house, a corn crib and a tool shed. All original. A lot of people have told me it is like stepping back in time at the farm. I am trying like mad to hold on to this beautiful property and each stay helps me with the never ending bills and upkeep. Thank you so much. John

A step back in time

Loved the farm and farm house. Very relaxing. My dog loved being able to explore. My teens didn’t like the limited Wi-Fi, no cell coverage and only one TV but somehow they survived! I would stay here again.

Beautiful and Secluded

  • 5 of 5

We had the most memorable Thanksgiving at this immaculate, historic farmhouse. What a lovely, charming house in a wondrous setting. We spent much time walking the expansive grounds and relaxing in the comfortable living room. To go outside at night and gaze at the stars and not hear a sound but the waters of the stream was restorative, to say the least. The house was spotless, and the owner, John, was helpful at every stage. Hope to be back soon.

The worst vacation experience

  • 1 of 5

We spent only one night at the house. The farm was nice and the house was clean. The following day, when we got back home, I received an email from the owner. I thought that I would receive a friendly thank you note since we left the house in excellent condition (followed all the instructions and cleaned the dishes that we used). To my great surprise, I received an aggressive and threatening email. The owned claimed that we damaged his lawn. Supposedly, our car left deep tire tracks. Without showing any evidence, he demanded that we send $250 directly to his PayPal account or otherwise he would send letters to my employers and take me to the court. This was shocking. We saw so many nice reviews about the property and the owner. Did he just snapped with us (and this is an anomaly), or there were other cases like ours but people were intimidated to post their stories? I don’t know. I feel it is my responsibility to say what happened to us so other people can make their own decisions whether they want to stay at his property. In any case, regardless who is right or wrong, there are better ways to resolve differences and not through threats and extortion.

Owner's Response: I have been renting out my property for a little over four years. Through the various online agencies I have had over 150 different group stays. 99% of the guests who visit show great care and consideration of the house and property and have a wonderful stay as reflected in my reviews. This guest damaged my property. I requested $250 to repair the damages. He refused and I said I would file a civil suit in small claims court. He knew he was in the wrong, knew I had the physical evidence of his careless actions, and knew he wouldn't have a chance if the matter was litigated. He promptly paid for the damages he incurred and now he is angry. His only recourse was to write this negative review. This whole matter has been very upsetting but I'm not going to let one bad apple spoil what has been a very pleasant experience for me: opening up my beautiful house and property for others to experience and enjoy.

Peaceful retreat, full of beauty

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay, a quick overnight away from the hustle and bustle of DC. John, the owner, was very responsive via email and made us feel at home. The farm house was perfect. Lots of space, very clean, full of art and books. The land around couldn't have been more beautiful. We explored the property, my kids played for hours outside near the stream, our dog was happy too. It was perfectly silent there. Wonderful night away.

Perfect Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was exactly what my wife and I were looking for. Peace and quiet in a beautiful setting. The farmhouse has all the charm you’d hope for in 150 year old house. The huge screened in porch was a wonderful place to enjoy coffee in the morning or wine in the evening. We’re already talking about the next time we will go back. Highly recommended!

Excellent stay in Sperryville

  • 5 of 5

Yes, we got away from it all for two nights! Lovely quiet, freshest air in a handsome old farm house. The place has the high ceilings, white walls and antique furnishing that give you a good view at every turn, both inside and out. We spent the time reading and watercoloring, walking the grounds, horseback riding in the Shenandoah National Park, and eating some good meals in Culpepper. The kitchen was well stocked, though we brought in our own groceries for breakfast and lunch from home. Look for the stars in the very dark sky! Thank you, John.
