About the property

Recapture the 1920's Jazz Era in the heart of Macon's Historic Dis

Welcome to our 1920’s Harwood Cottage... a Jazz Era mansion in the very heart of modern Macon, just a couple blocks off I-75's exit 164 but nearly a century beyond. This wonderful home has 6 secure bedrooms (4 king) & 3.5 baths accommodating up to 23 adults with relative ease. It isn't perfect (yet) but it is spacious, well appointed and full of discovery. It's a perfect place to gather. Our popular 'Whole House Rental' includes up to eight adults and/or older kids and our three suite rentals have a two person max occupancy on available nights. We can also customize a space to fit your exact needs. Each option is a ‘hard to beat value' and as always, children under 10 are free.

AMMENITIES

The Harwood Cottage is a 30 room mansion on five levels.. The whole house & individual suite rentals are both on the two main floors but never at the same time. All guests enjoy the use of our home's public spaces including: formal reception & main stair halls, living (drawing) room, ‘Chinoise’ dining room, breakfast room, media lounge, music library, conservatory & kitchen. Our garden level is partially available for those using our exercise studio, hot tub grotto or laundry, up to 6 free secure lighted garage or motor court parking spaces, free hi-speed internet, free Continental Breakfast, plus the use of our china & silver service, art & antiques, grand piano, flat screen tv, DVD, book & music collections, gardens, outdoor grille, fire pit, outdoor deck dining area and our historic house & downtown tour plus 24 hour concierge, laundry, security, cleaning & livery services with affordable in-house catering services available through Byron Gay Hospitality Services.

BOOKING

(We are pleased to announce that as of 1/1/18, for the third year in a row, we’ve been named the number one destination in our region by Home Away/VRBO. and also for our third consecutive time we have earned 'SuperHost’ status from a leading competitor. We wish to thank the over 5,000 wonderful guests who have supported us over these past three years).

There are two ways to book The Harwood Cottage:

Option A: The Standard Whole House Rental

Our most popular booking... an exclusive accommodation unshared by other travellers. We ask a modest nightly fee (standard rate of $298/nite for the private 20 room main living area for up to eight standard guests) and welcome larger groups to a maximum of 23. Please plan on a $19/nite guest gratuity for each additional guest beyond your standard 8 guests which covers the added incremental cost of the additional breakfasts, linens, towels, utilities, trash removal, cleaning & maintenance. (Please note: Each of the following 'special requests must be made in writing at least 48 hours in advance of check in: a. 'Remote Owner Stay' sometimes events call for maximum privacy. We can make provisions for that when you agree in writing to waive all on-going services including: laundry, concierge, livery, security, repair, maintenance, breakfast and landscaping services. You must also include an acknowledgment that you will pay any additional fees that may apply. b. Professional Bonded Cleaning Services are also available. We offer a 'swept clean' accommodation that meets the standards outlined by each of our booking partners. If, for personal reasons you require something more, we can arrange access or even recommend local services once a written request is received. Additional fees may apply). Wherever possible, please use our instant booking option to reserve your desired dates. If you find a date or set of dates that appear unavailable, please contact us. Often, just a single suite has been 'spoken for'. With a bit of flexibility, there may still be a work around so reach out to us and let us see what we can do.

Option B: Choosing A Private Suite(s):

Sometimes you don't need a whole house. That's ok. When the property is not fully booked, we invite singles, couples & small families to stay. Choose from one of our three 'Private Suites' (based on availability) at their more modest nightly fares: The William Suite $65/nite, The Eudora Suite $75/nite or The Sidney Suite $85/nite. All have private baths. Please note: Recently, we streamlined our offerings to a single property listing which is our whole house rental. So, when booking a suite, please contact us by text through the booking service prior to filling out your booking worksheet and tell us what your needs will be. Simply review the three suite photo collages to determine which you prefer, then tell us your custom needs and we'll be right back to you with our best tailored solution. (Please note, your suite may also include: private balcony, gas fireplace, large jacuzzi tub, marble or hardwood floors, built in vanity, sleigh bed, antique furnishings, cedar closets, mirrored dressing area, stained glass windows, reading nook, private entrance, leather sofa, original art by Banksy, Remington & others, autographed first editions volumes, Murano or Lalique chandeliers or a first floor 'stair free' option. All suiite guests have access to all the (shared) public spaces that Whole House Renters enjoy.

THE WRAP UP...

Come & experience an authentic Southern home, complete with all the artifacts, heirlooms & imperfections you'd expect. Here you'll find a bygone era hidden in the tales of Barons of Lumber, Boisterous Bootleggers, Baptist Ministers, Bedside Nurses, Budding Aviators & Broadway Bankers; who have called this place home over the past century. You’ll find the energy of the pioneers and plantation folk who came before them. You’ll find the heritage and hallowed hills of the native people who came before us all. What you won’t find is the glitzy pseudo-perfection of a corporate chain with its gleaming mini bar and greedy pricing; or the vacant, faux time share with its empty cabinets and last year’s ‘must have’ colors. Most of all, you won’t find yet another lonely, neon stained, Interstate motel replete with dozens of white contractor trucks.

Hey, if you think you might find peace in a palace sized room, pleasure in a croissant covered tray and promise in a piano by the fire... relax! You already have a place in the heart of Georgia! If you secretly want to visit us just to “Tear ‘ole Dixie Down”, please, pass us by. That battle’s been won (around here they say it was a draw). Let’s work from love people... time is getting short, now.

Hurricane Irma Update: Thank you to all who have supported us since last Fall's historic hurricane, the strongest ever recorded. We are told the last of the fence and roof repairs should finally be completed by the end of April. Our Spring ‘18 spotlights are: Music: The Hot Sardines, Literature: Faulkner-Argumentative Fiction, Art: Liondecker, When Art Became Commercial, Restoration: Interior Frescoes & Grisaille, Exterior: Fountains & Footpaths.

About John Cappelano

I am an eclectic individual who loves the contradictions that make life interesting. I have reached the middle of my life, living in Macon, GA but the son of a Mayflower Mom and a first generation Italian dad. I love the arts, painting, music, writing but I have made most of my money over the years on Wall Street. I haven't made that much though because I have chosen to be honest in a game that doesn't pay the honest very well. I love old houses and new cars. I believe in tradition though I am totally iconoclastic. I love to travel but I could be totally happy never having to leave Harwood Cottage again. I am a hometown boy who finds himself traveling over 3,000 miles for work, frequently. I am a Cancer (zodiac wise only). I am single. I am over 50. I am nostalgic.

John Cappelano purchased this house in 2006

Why John Cappelano chose Macon

This property was chosen by my parents many years ago as their ideal place to retire. It was found by chance on a historic homes at Christmas tour in the Macon Historic District. The house became loved by both of them because of its first floor suite with private full bath and the Music Library which could be used as an extension of that suite. They loved the many sets of pocket doors and access between rooms on every floor allowing for an endless configuration of open or semi-open floor plans. The old back porch allows for access to the kitchen just steps from the William Suite (their first floor suite), bedroom. Though they didn't have much money, they did their best to honor their favorite Southern writers and the literary history of the people of Macon. My dad passed a few years ago and several months ago, my Mom joined him. My nephew and I are currently restoring the home back to the glory of my folks early retirement and then some. Our guests have even helped us with ideas on projects like the secret garden and the Chinese Dining Room. Each week, something new is completed and it's all because if people like you! All in all, the house is very ingenious given the 1920's era when it was imagined. Come visit and live the life of a Southern Novelist of The Jazz Era with all its quiet romance, boisterous bravado and faded hints of tawdriness.

It was just what we were looking for the family attending a wedding. Really enjoyed the nostalgia of the home and neighborhood. Host was most accomodating and very welcoming.

Loved the mansion; interesting history; super nice owner. Our only problem was one of the bathrooms was not cleaned, so we couldn’t use it. Still a cool place, tho.

Beautiful Large Home Just Needs a Little TLC

  • 4 of 5

This is a beautiful large home in a lovely neighborhood in Macon. Lots of room for our family of 10. (6 adults, 2 toddlers and 2 one year old twins) John was great in communicating with us through out our reservation process. He asked us what time we wished to arrive and we agreed on the 3:00 check in. When we arrived, house was not yet ready, so we went out exploring Macon. When we arrived back at 5:30, house was still not ready for us, but John showed us the house, gave some history and then he finished up. All good. The rest of our family arrived very much later in the evening, and bedrooms were set up. It rained hard that night, and one of the rooms (thankfully one we chose not to use) had quite a good leak thru the ceiling.(mentioned several times in previous reviews) John later explained that the roofers didn't secure the tarp well that had been placed there till further repairs could be made. The kitchen was well stocked, with coffee, tea, cereals, milk, spices, literally everything you would need. On the first day John left bagels, fruit, croissants and juice. What a nice treat. During our stay we had a couple of issues and tried to communicate with John, but he didn't receive and of our messages. He indicated that it was due to a "Home Away" glitch. Didn't effect our stay, but weird that we didn't hear from him, as he was so good at communicating during our initial process.

The positives staying here definitely out weighed the few issues that we encountered. Place has lots of history and lots of room! Kitchen was well stocked, tons of dishes, glasses, pots and pans etc.. Rooms were spacious and 2 large living areas for families to gather.

The house is old, and really needs a bit of T.L.C. The roof especially in need of repair to prevent further leaks. Organization in the kitchen would be great. (Tons of stuff, just very disorganized) John did a great job, but the floors were really dirty, and socks were black. It's a huge house and probably hiring someone to assist in cleaning would be necessary, and ensure an on time check in. I definitely recommend this home for a large group or family, but caution on some of the issues that were pointed out in some of the previous reviews, and check on the status with John. Hope you are well John.

Nice Small Wedding Venue

  • 4 of 5

I booked this location for 2 days and has my wedding there. It was a nice intimate location for my ceremony. There is lots of space and the bedrooms were nice. The bathroom next to my room was still being renovated so it left a little to be desired. We used one of the others with a large tub and it was much nicer. Overall, I was very pleased with our stay. John is nice and helpful. I couldn’t have imagined the wedding being any better.

Amazing stay! Incredibly helpful host!

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the Harwood was incredible! We had a large group and filled the whole house over our wedding weekend. John was very responsive and went to get any supplies or clean bedding and towels as needed. We also hosted two great parties at the house.

Outstanding stay and we would highly recommend the Harwood Cottage!

Owner's Response: What can we say? This was an amazing family to host. Great in so many ways that the words were hard to find but find them we did. Try: thoughtful, polite, conscientious, fun, pleasant, cheerful, engaging, inclusive, welcoming, understanding, charitable, charmingly gregarious, never cold despite the circumstances or weather, beautiful, interesting and a stunning couple atop the cake on New Year’s Eve made this New Year’s wedding one for our keepsake book. The stay was wonderful. The parties were meticulously managed, the property was left exactly as we expected it to be. We coukdn’t Be more impressed with a guest or the large group of well wishers who joined them here on their big day. A lifetime of happiness with a 2018 full of adventure should await this incredible couple!!! We were truly honored...J

Owner's Response: Thank you Zack for your review. We gave you a solid five star review, as well. It was so nice to end the summer season and head into the holidays with such a great guest and friends. You all were so honest, respectful and straight forward that we’d forgotten how great it could be when wonderful guests turn out to be appreciative of how hard we work to deliver a solid venue at a really good value. It restores our faith and gets us energized to work even harder! Thanks again, John C. The Harwood Cottage At Historic Macon
