This updated 1950’s Cottage is the perfect basecamp for exploring the Southern Outer Banks without breaking the bank. Located in Smyrna, 8 minutes to Harkers Island, the Cottage is in a great location to access several different adventure options: Cape Lookout, Core Banks, Davis & Cedar Island Ferries, Beaufort, Morehead City and Atlantic Beach. Enjoy central air, a well-equipped kitchen with gas stove. There are two bedrooms, each accommodating 2 people (1 queen bed and 2 twin beds). On the screened-in porch, along with a delightful hammock, you will find an outside propane grill and wonderful sitting area. There is ample boat parking in the yard with a fenced-in backyard, surrounded by Pine, Oak, and Wax Myrtle trees. This Downeast get away is a great choice for getting away from it all.

From mid-June to the end of August, rental is weekly from Saturday to Saturday. Please check calendar for availability.

Watersports: Free public ramps are minutes from the Cottage with access to kayaking, surfing, fishing, diving, sailing, beachcombing, birdwatching. If you don't have your own boat, access is quick and simple via the passenger ferry located at Cape Lookout Visitor's Center. They will drop you off on your own pristine part of the beach and haul all your gear as well (including surfboards) for no extra charge. Rates are reasonable and the captains will give you a history lesson on the way over! Interested in kayaking? You can tackle the 3-mile crossing from Harkers Island to the Cape or spend endless days exploring the many bays, rivers, and inlets around Core Sound. Seeking flounder, wahoo, cobia, blues, kings, trout, snapper, puppy drum? You've come to the right place. There are also numerous diving opportunities found in this area, known as Graveyard of the Atlantic. Take your own boat to the dive site, or utilize the services of the dive shops in Morehead City, Beaufort or Harkers Island.

Shopping and Sightseeing: Historic Beaufort by the Sea, just 20 minutes away, has many specialties, antique and curio shops. Spend time on the boardwalk, people watching or take a boat tour of the harbor or one of the many historical homes. For the lover of history, the Old Burial Grounds, the Maritime Museum, and Wooden Boat Building offer insight into the history and culture of this area.Beaufort also has many outstanding seafood restaurants. (Fresh seafood is also available roadside, as many fishermen sell directly to the public from their own homes). The Morehead City waterfront, famous for its fleet of deepsea head boats and seafood restaurants, art galleries and museums, is just over the bridge from Beaufort. And the NC Aquarium is located in Atlantic Beach.

Or, you may want to take the Cedar Island Ferry and explore the many small communities with varied and colorful histories! Head over to Harkers Island and visit the Core Sound Waterfowl & Heritage Museum or Cape Lookout National Seashore Visitor.

Landsports: A 3-minute drive takes you to the Smyrna recreational fields with tennis, soccer, softball/baseball and basketball courts that are open to the public.

About Sisters Mary Barnum & Jeanne Barnum Josephson

My sister Jeanne and I are joint owners of Sea Grace Cottage. We grew up in Morehead City, but have both moved out of state. We are from a very large family, most of which still live and work in Carteret County. Once upon a time, we were both avid kayakers. Now, we just get dropped off the boat onto the beach and relax! We truly love to be out-of-doors, exploring the natural world.

Sisters Mary Barnum & Jeanne Barnum Josephson purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Sisters Mary Barnum & Jeanne Barnum Josephson chose Smyrna

We purchased Sea Grace Cottage to have a place for our families to stay and relax while visiting our NC family. The Cottage is tucked away in a very peaceful hamlet but allows us quick access to the salt life that we loved as children.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Mary,

We're heading out now. We LOVE your cottage and hope to come back next year. One small thing you should know (not a problem for us). This morning, we turned the stove burner on; it worked; then when we tried to relight, nothing happened (except that it made that lighter clicking sound). We didn't have a chance to go to the store to buy matches to see if that would start it. You'll probably want to have your cleaning people check it out.

Thanks for letting us stay at your beautiful home. My husband will have to pry me of the porch now!

Awesome quite getaway

  • 5 of 5

It took us 3 hours longer to get to the Cottage due to the snow the day before. It was all worth it. The Cottage was very well set up and was more than amazing for our dog. He loved the back yard. We got exactly what we wanted... a quite low key weekend. We will stay again. Loved it!

Feedback for Sea Grace

  • 2 of 5

Hi Mary,

My husband, two dogs and myself loved your cottage, but there were some things that really overshadowed our stay. First of all we came to Sea Grace to relax and unwind, unfortunately the only peace and quiet was at nighttime. We were not told about the house construction across the street from the cottage. It started approx. at 8:00 am each morning and continued all day, so most mornings we were awoken by banging, hammering, nail guns, electric saws, and the coming and going of vehicles to the construction site including large trucks delivering lumber. Being located on a small quiet dead end road sounded peaceful in the Home Away listing but it was anything but. My husband and I walked our two dogs down the road one morning and one of the lumber trucks roared by us, never even slowed, very rude we thought especially for such a small, short street, a few minutes later a car went by very fast not even acknowledging us and came close to hitting us, all in such a hurry. I remember years ago I spent some time in the Carolina's and was impressed by the southern hospitality and kindness of the South but I see that seems to have changed.

Apart from the noise there were a few other things I want to mention. There was no soap, we brought a bar of our own soap for showering, but there was no hand soap or even dish soap in the kitchen or bathroom. We couldn't find any washcloths except two under the bathroom sink and they were very worn and would be classified more as rags for cleaning.

We did enjoy the beautiful yard and so did our dogs and also enjoyed some time fishing, but overall we were hoping for a peaceful location and it was not.

Sincerely, Lynne and Bobby Simms

Owner's Response: Hey Lynne: Thank you for sharing your concerns with me. I do strive to make the Cottage as comfortable and welcoming as possible and I do appreciate your feedback. Until you informed me about the noise from the construction, I was not aware it was a problem. In fact, I did not even know construction was taking place at that time. I have attempted to share the information with guests who have since rented the Cottage. I am surprised that you found no hand, dishwashing or laundry soap as the housekeeper refills these after each guest leaves. This is something that has not been mentioned previously but I will ask her about it. I do apologize for the wash clothes. Ann did say we were running low and I did not resupply her until recently. Again, thank you for your feedback. Mary

Exactly as advertised

If you want a great place to hang with your dogs, this is it. If you want a quiet place away from it all, this is it. If you want a simple, clean, no frills, no tv, no access getaway, this is it. If you want to be within walking distance to water, this is not your kind of place. If you want to view the sunset or sunrise from the house, this is not your kind of place. If you don't like to drive 20 minutes to get just about anywhere, this is not your kind of place. The owners and reviewers clearly detail what the property is and isn't and we made our decision based on that and we were not disappointed. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because of housekeeping checkout procedure. Guests are required to wash and dry sheets and towels and put away before leaving. This added almost two hours to our departure. I prefer option of placing used linens in a designated area for housekeeper to manage.

Owner's Response: Hey Sue: Thank you for your candid review. I agree; people who base their decision to stay at Sea Grace Cottage by reading the descriptions provided seem to be happy with their decision to stay with us. If you are looking for a laid back, retro get away from-it- all vacation with quick access to Cape Lookout National Seashore, and grilling out on the deck, you will be happy with your choice. If you want to spend your time eating out, shopping and watching tv, you will be disappointed! Based on your comments regarding linens, perhaps we should review our check out policy. Thank you!

Very nice, clean, and comfortable place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This is my 5th stay at Sea Grace. My dogs love the fenced back yard. If you are looking for a place on the water this is not it BUT you are literally minutes away from a ferry to Cape Lookout, fishing dock/boat ramp, and charming historic Beaufort, NC.
