About Paul Manning

I'd best describe myself as a responsible professional who enjoys new adventures, hosting friends and family, sports/fitness, and meeting new people. I'm very easy going - rarely getting stressed out or too worked up about anything - lifes too short. I also love Chicago. I take great pride in our city - always happy to share the hot spots, local festivals, tourist locations, vintage shops, restaurants, transportation directions, etc.

Paul Manning purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Paul Manning chose Bucktown

1) I'm originally from Boston, MA. The great people of Chicago are what originally attracted me to the city and they're what keeps me here. No other city of 6 million people will make someone feel so welcome. It offers all the convience and trend of a major international destination but yet often feels more like living in a small midwest farm town. It's a special place.

2) Forbes Magazine recently rated Bucktown/Wicker Park as the 4th hipest hipster neighborhood in the country. Chicago's hottest restaurants, nightlife, and shopping is on our doorstep.

3) The house I purchased was built in 1892. It's an historic workers cottage originally home to some of Chicago's hardest working immigrants. As neighborhoods transition these historic homes are disappearing. The opportunity to preserve this piece of Chicago history was something I was most attracted to.

Not awful, not great

  • 2 of 5

Pros

• Great neighborhood w/ abundance of bars & restaurants.

• Plenty of free street parking right in front of the house.

• Good water pressure & plenty of hot water.

• Nice plush bath towels.

• Nice big flat-screen TV.

• Unit mostly clean w/ a couple of exceptions.

• Owner was very easy-going & quick to respond to questions.

Cons

• Unit was not ready for us to check in until 5pm, as cleaning crew was running behind due to bad weather/traffic (reasons given by owner). This was not a big deal, but if you are going to delay check in because the cleaning crew needs more time, then you should really make sure place is in tip-top shape when you eventually let guests in.

• First let-down came when opening the fridge, as it was not stocked as pictured in the listing. Rather than a nice selection of soft drinks, bottled water, etc., it was completely empty save 5 cans of Coors Light. Snack basket was also not stocked as pictured in listing.

• No paper towels, dishtowels, or tissues, and no dish soap were provided. Host did bring us about a 1/3 of a roll of paper towels when we asked for some, but again, it was a bit of a let-down to have to ask for stuff like this, especially after check-in was pushed back to give the cleaning crew time to get the unit ready. Had we known this would be the case, we could have run to a convenience store to stock up on our own drinks/snacks/supplies while waiting for cleaning crew to finish.

• Mattress is extremely soft and lumpy. You can actually see the waves in it. Despite preferring a firmer bed, I actually slept pretty comfortably, but be advised that if you do not tend to sleep well on a soft mattress, then this bed is probably not for you.

• Staircase in/out of the unit is very tight & steep. Getting luggage down/up is no easy task and if mobility is at all an issue for you, getting down & back up, even without a bag, will be a challenge.

• Ceiling is also very low. I kept hitting the hair dryer on the ceiling when styling my hair.

• Furniture is heavily worn w/ lots of knicks, and there’s no nightstand by the bed.

• There was only 1 plate & 2 bowls in the kitchen, and 1 of the bowls was chipped as noted by a previous reviewer.

• Carpet also ripped as stated by another reviewer, and not just in one spot but several.

• Loud, high-pitch squeal in the pipes when using shower.

• To access backyard, you must go thru owner’s basement/laundry room & also pass the entryway to his kitchen.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. We’re glad you thought the apartment was clean and in a desirable location. We’re also happy you were able to take advantage of the WiFi, HD TV, coffee and snacks we provide at no additional costs to guests. Although we’d have preferred you simply let us know how we could’ve improved your stay during your time with us, we understand it is our responsibility to meet or even exceed guest expectations. As evident by all of our past reviews... we normally achieve that. Pease note: carpet has been fixed, chipped plate replaced, body soap, paper towels, and sugar are now once again in the apartment for guest use. As far as the mattress, we continue to consider replacing it however we often receive feedback from guests who love the soft pillow top. To guests considering a stay with us... please always feel free to write or call with questions or concerns. Thank you!

Quiet, safe, studio type basement apartment

  • 5 of 5

This is a nice place in a nice neighborhood. Paul met us when we arrived to give us the ins and outs, and was available for help when we needed it. Very knowledgeable of the area. Just about anything we could think of was within walking distance. Took a Lyft to downtown and it was less than 20 bucks. Just know if there are multiple people in your group, it's a studio setup so the bedroom is not private. Great place, can't beat the location, felt safe! Would stay there again!

True to Reviews

  • 5 of 5

Instead of repeating all the wonderful reviews already on VRBO, I'll just say that my experience was consistent with all the other positive comments. At 6' tall, I never had an issue with the low ceiling (6'4" - 6'6"), even when showering. Great neighborhood with plenty of good restaurants within walking distance. Easy access to public transportation taking you to many of Chicago's touristy destinations and districts. When not taking the train, it's centrally located to make an easy drive to other locations. We'll definitely consider staying here again if/when we visit Chicago again.

Location

Car: not necessary

Wicker Park/Bucktown was recently ranked by Forbes Magazine as the fourth “Hippest Hipster Neighborhoods” in the country. It is a safe, vibrant area full of record shops, boutiques, great vintage shopping, art galleries, music venues, neighborhood bars, and book stores. You can find the best restaurants in the city here. It also has many attractive outdoor spaces, including Wicker Park, Holstein Park (with swimming pool), and the brand new Bloomingdale Trail.
