About Mike & Cynthia Sommer

Our family has been enjoying this cabin and beautiful South Lake Tahoe (and the surrounding Tahoe basin) since 1997.

Mike & Cynthia Sommer purchased this chalet in 1997

Why Mike & Cynthia Sommer chose South Lake Tahoe

This cabin is out of the hustle-bustle of the main town. The neighborhood is very quiet. Surrounded by undeveloped forest lots.

We offer a 2 car garage for sheltered parking. A HUGE bonus during the winter snow season.

What makes this chalet unique

Have the cabin all to yourselves. Fully self-contained, most guests who visit end up just hanging out at the cabin enjoying the quiet and going for hikes and snowshoeing in the surrounding forest, just 1/4 mile from the Upper Truckee River.

Owners delightful; property aging

  • 3 of 5

As others have noted and as should be clear from the rental's pricing, this is not an ultra modern property. The bedrooms have plenty of space, if minimal lighting. The interior walls are rather thin--not sure how much dry wall, if any, lie beneath the paneling. The kitchen is perfectly adequate for coffee, toast, and simple meals. If your vacations require creature comforts, this homey cabin with it's kitsch decorations and confounding window coverings may not be for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for a very convenient place to crash for your skiing or mountain biking get-away in Tahoe and you recognize that you will mostly be sleeping there rather than loafing, this cabin merits consideration. We stayed here for the front half of President's Weekend 2017, when the front stairs and hot tub in back were completely snowed out. Our kids had a blast playing in the snow in the back. Our car would not traverse the iced driveway into the garage without chains. A decent snow shovel on the property would be a welcome addition. The hot air popcorn popper was nowhere to be found and the top silverware drawer in the kitchen was broken. But the range, toaster, fridge, freezer, micro, dishwasher, washer/dryer, and hot tub all worked just fine. The furnace worked, there were ample blankets, the showers were hot and the water pressure sufficient, the owners were exceedingly responsive and solicitous providing detailed information about the rental, including restaurant recommendations, and we had a great time skiing powder! We enjoyed our trip.

Great location, Close to everything Great Skiing

  • 2 of 5

The house is in a great area, Close enough to South Lake for Dinner, 5 minutes to Starbucks 10 min to Heavenly Gondola. Overall the house was in built in 1974 and NEVER updated.LOOK AT THE PICTURES, THEY ARE THE REAL DEAL. None of the snow was cleaned off any of the stairs, The Hot Tub was inaccessible due to the amount of snow on the deck. There are Mold issues everywhere in the house even mold on the fire wood in the garage, water in the garage all over the floor. The house was clean though and the heat was adequate. I guess you get what you pay for...I'll definitely do better research next time

Owner's Response: Yes, it's the real deal. We have nothing to hide. The cabin is advertised as such -- a cabin. Very affordable and user-friendly. This is our private family cabin in the mountains that we share on the rental market. It's not the Taj Mahal and it is not advertised as such. You'll be hard pressed to find a hotel in South Lake Tahoe for rates better than these rates with all the amenities, excellent location, and privacy we can offer. As for the snow: We were blessed with record amounts if not historical amounts of snow and rainfall hopefully breaking the long California drought. That's a good thing but it did introduce some challenges for residents all over Tahoe -- and California. If you are considering a trip to Tahoe any time of year, I suggest keeping up with current events, news and weather to see what conditions might be in store for you and alter your vacation plans if you think it will be a hindrance for you. We spent 100's of dollars (above and beyond the normal snow removal contract that is purchased annually) getting the road and driveway cleared enough for guests to be able to have access to the cabin through the garage during the storms bring record precipitation. Note: It is stated in the paperwork that during heavy snowfall, there is access to the cabin via the garage as sometimes the snowfall overwhelms the snow removal crew. Water in the garage? When a car drives in the snow, snow accumulates on and under the car. Then when the car is parked in the highly convenient garage, said snow falls off and melts. Magic, WATER! Welcome to Sierra living. As with any guest, I ask to be made aware of anything of concern If I don't know about it, I can help the situation. I would have gladly gone out of my way to make it right, as I always have done in my 22 years or renting out vacation properties. Some sage advice to anyone renting any vacation property -- if you feel there is an issue during your stay, address with the owner FIRST. Not later, in a bad review. I'll let the rest of the reviews speak for themselves. Enjoy Lake Tahoe! It has a lot to offer. "To breathe the same air as the angels, you must go to Tahoe" -Mark Twain

We had a wonderful time at this home.

  • 3 of 5

The owner was very nice and let us check in early. The house had plenty of room but the cleanliness was very poor. There was popcorn on the floor and under the beds. Also there were dirty tissues under the bed. There were garlic cloves under the microwave as well. Again we enjoyed the house but the cleanliness was horrible.

Thank you

Owner's Response: Typically this does not happen. The cleaners that I use are the best I have seen over the many years that I have owned cabins in Lake Tahoe. Our prior reviews reflect this. The cleaning service has been notified of the situation. Corrective measures are in place to make sure this situation is avoided in the future.

Great Location, Wonderful Property

  • 5 of 5

Much thanks to Mike and Cynthia for our stay in their rental property. The hot tub was clean, the location was easy to get to, and the constant communication to make the trip smooth was everything and more. I appreciate that they called up their local cable provider to allow us the opportunity to order a PPV event. There was plenty of firewood to keep us warm for the weekend, all amenities were as described. Definitely recommend to family/friends for the future, plenty of bed space and very centralized living space. Owner provided outstanding customer service.

Cozy place to stay with family

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to South Lake Tahoe. Mike and Cynthia were extremely friendly and helpful with any questions I had and even sent information for the surrounding area. The cabin is beautiful and very cozy. It is also close to a grocery store and a pizza and hamburger joint. Plenty of space for a family of 5 plus 2 children. I would highly recommend.

Great price, away from the hubbub

  • 4 of 5

Function and comfort, instead of luxury finishes, at a great price. One nice luxury item: hot tub! Beautiful spacious surroundings. (Many cabins in town are way too close together.) During the week, we did have one evening that the Internet and tv service was out. We knew this was a possibility since the property is out from town, which also explains why cell phone connection is only available in certain spots in the cabin. But for those that are on a get-a-way, these are not an issue.
