Property type lodge
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

Lodge, 4000 sq. ft., 6 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 16-22)

Welcome to Moonlight Lake, the High Sierra & Yosemite's premiere vacation home rental!

Moonlight Lake is the premier vacation home in the High Sierra & Yosemite area! It boasts 33 acres of private land with a 4000 square feet home perch atop a hill overlooking the private lake. Lago de la Luna has been the host for many events such as summer vacations, family reunions, and its share of weddings and receptions.

The best feature of property is the private lake. Come and enjoy your own fishing hole that is privately held by the owner of Moonlight Lake. Only the owners and their guests are allowed access to this water which means you could be the only one fishing this majestic water. The best catch so far has been a 19' BASS from a friend in Argentina, who is going to beat this record?

There are so many activities you can do without having to leave the premises! From swimming (in the pool or in the lake??), fishing, hiking, riding, or playing horseshoes there are so many things for everyone to enjoy while having the privacy for your own party!!

Moonlight Lake (ML) is a split tri-level home that is approximately 4000 square feet with 6 bedrooms and 3 baths. It posseses amenities such as a large media room, two levels of outdoor decking, a large dining room table, custom-built fireplace, volleyball pool, jetted hot tub, horseshoe pit, and views of the water from every single room. The master bedroom is tucked downstairs with an access to the lower and larger deck. The master bath has a great jetted spa tub that overlooks the lake. The media room is equipped with the latest gear such as a 55' 1080p LED TV, Blu-Ray DVD Player, and High-Def satellite for the ultimate viewing pleasure. There are two levels of decking in the back of the home that has hosted wedding ceremonies for those interested in intimate settings. Moonlight Lake is definitely about family and fun especially with the pool and hot tub conveniently located next to the house.

ML is a great piece of property in the center of all the action in the mountains! It is only 5 minutes away from Bass Lake and 10 minutes from the center of Oakhurst. The property is conveniently located 30 minutes away from the South Entrance of Yosemite National Park!

About william deruyter

I am an investor in the Yosemite area and have several unique water properties in the Oakhurst area. Please let me know if you have any questions about my homes or the area itself.

william deruyter purchased this lodge in 2010

Why william deruyter chose Oakhurst

I couldn't resist when this property became available in the market! This home has only had 2 previous owners; the first owned it for 30+ years until they sold to buyers in 2004 that eventually lost the home due to the housing bubble! We're here to pick up the pieces and bring this home back to the market for people to enjoy and make their own memories!

What makes this lodge unique

What a great getaway from everyone but still the convenience of being in town! Private 33 acres conveniently located just 10 minutes from the nearest grocery store! There are so many great things to share with this home; but I think the best feature of this home is the backyard! It's rare to have your own fishing hole; the water is private to the property therefore no one can fish without the owner's consent.

The property shows it age because of a lack of a little TLC.

  • 3 of 5

It's an older home that could definitely use some love, but despite that it's big and a fun place for kids and dogs. Also a little pricey for things not to be in working order like lighting, air conditioning and hottub.

Great place for a family gathering

  • 4 of 5

This house accommodated our large family well. The paddle boat and pool table were well used. Very functional kitchen and ample pantry space. Wonderfully large dining room table. Shaded and comfortable outdoor seating areas. The house was clean and ready for us. Recommendations for improvement:

Our arrival information did not include driving directions. The actual address of the house was somewhat buried in the emergency information section.

There were no specific instructions for dealing with trash. We figured out that the large shed on the driveway housed a dumpster. There were several full recycling containers on the deck - even though we had been warned that bears could be nighttime visitors.

The lighting in the living room is very dim.

Finally, there were no replacement trash bags and dishwashing liquid and dishwashing detergent were almost empty. The housekeeper did respond to our call and came with more supplies.

Poorly Maintained, but lots of potential

  • 2 of 5

This property is very large and beautiful. It was a short drive to Bass Lake which was perfect for us. The house easily accommodates larger groups.

Upon arrival, we had to unload the previous guests dishes from the dishwasher, empty loads from the washer and dryer. (Not a single towel was folded in their cabinet for towels- and the ones on the racks in the bathrooms did not appear clean). We cleaned the bathrooms that were visibly dirty. The pool required chemicals and cleaning (it was green). We bought a blower for the large deck area to blow the leaves that are pretty sharp if you have bare feet (which you usually would by the pool).

We also struggled with the AC unit- but the owner did come and put one window AC unit in the bunk bed room. The couple staying in that room said it made a huge difference. (So maybe they will consider doing that in the rest of the bedrooms). At that time the owner did say he would give us our cleaning deposit back; however, we have not heard from him since to take care of this. It's highly unfortunate that such a beautiful property with so much potential is so poorly maintained.

If it was well maintained, it is somewhere I could see taking your family annually.

Secluded Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This place is awesome and I would highly recommend for multi-families. We went in late March so the weather was sunny and in the high 60's / low 70's (no snow what-so-ever). The pool is not heated during this season, but the hot tub works pretty well. There is plenty of room in the house to have personal space and separate sleeping arrangements for large groups. What's nice about the location is that it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, but are only 10 minutes from all the basic amenities that you would need (i.e grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacy). I would just caution to drive a SUV or truck for the dirt roads are pretty rutted to the house and you need the ground clearance. What we loved most about the place was the yard and lake. Our group was outside nearly the whole time and mostly fishing.

The lake has a ton of bass and were hitting all weekend for us at nearly every spot that you casted from.

The weekend went by way too quick and this is the type of place where you literally do not need to leave once you are there. We will definitely be back.

Lovely setting, but NEEDS ATTENTION!

  • 2 of 5

We rented this property last month for a large family gathering. I want to start by saying we had a wonderful time. It was a perfect setting: the private(?) lake, the pool and beautiful surroundings. However, there were issues that must be addressed before we would rent again. I waited to write this as I had hoped to hear back from the owner, who I contacted weeks ago with all this feedback. I have gotten no response.

MOST IMPORTANTLY FOR FUTURE RENTERS: There is a large house being built very close to this house with its own dock and “no trespassing” signs, which prevents you from walking around the lake (we did it anyways). This would GREATLY affect future use of the property. The listing makes a big deal that this is a private lake where guests have sole use of the lake. Although beautiful, we would not rent this if the lake were shared and there was not the privacy.

Additionally, the house needs better upkeep. First, if you allow dogs, you need to clean up after them! We are dog owners and animal lovers, but the state of the house was unacceptable. The bed that my husband and I slept in was COVERED in dog hair. There was dog waste all around outside, including near the front door and the pool area. The outdoor areas were generally quite dirty. Not only did we deal with dog poop, there was trash strewn about: bottles, gum wrappers, my nephew even found a cigarette butt. Although I'm sure it's difficult to keep up with the dirt and dust, the outdoor furniture was covered in dust and cobwebs. The outdoor kitchen had not been cleaned (sink and cushions were filthy and trash strewn about). We spent a lot of time cleaning when we arrived. We left the place in a far better state than when we arrived!

More outdoor furniture is needed. The house holds a large group. But there was only a handful of chairs on the deck, and nothing by the pool except a stonewall. Also, basic necessities were not provided, including NO toilet paper or trash bags.

There was a VERY large noise associated with the plumbing. It occurred anytime any of the toilets were flushed and when the dishwasher was running. It made sleeping downstairs almost unbearable. It put a damper on the visit for half the group who were sleeping downstairs given we were unable to sleep. An easy fix? No idea given zero response from the owner.

Overall, our stay was lovely. BUT we would not recommend this to others or rent it again ourselves until we knew the above had been addressed.

Better than the photos!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this beautiful location in August 2016 with our extended family.

Everyone was so impressed!

Here are a few of our favorite things...

--The huge kitchen table!

--The TV room with multiple pull out beds (even in the ottomans)

--Catching fish on the dock!

--The paddle boat

--The beautiful swimming pool and hot tub!

--The outdoor pool table

--The expansive deck

--The gorgeous view!

--The town of Oakhurst had everything we needed, as far as groceries,

restaurants, Urgent Care and a pharmacy. (What would vacation be without a sick child?!)

--There is also a bus stop in Oakhurst that made it possible for a relative to take the

bus from Bakersfield for about $15.00! Fantastic!

It's a very spacious home and could accommodate our large group of children and adults.

We set up craft tables on the upper decks, played games and enjoyed meals at the long kitchen table,

and played family minute-to-win-it on the outdoor deck. It was relaxing and peaceful... and also secluded enough

to not worry about making too much noise when we were playing in the pool!

A few issues we ran into...

--We never did figure out how to work the remotes for the TVs.

--Some of us (especially T-mobile customers) had no cell service at this location.

--The wi-fi at the cabin is not very strong in some spots... a little bit temperamental.

--The fastest route to the cabin is on a TERRIBLE "road"... however, the rental info provides directions for a smoother, longer route.

--There is no gate around the pool area, so you must be VERY vigilant if you are with young children!

--Also, Yosemite is actually much farther than we thought, and Mariposa Grove is closed till 2017. Bummer.

Overall, I am still giving this location a 5-star rating because it was a perfect location for our reunion!

The home is clean and cozy. Some rooms are spacious, others are not... and it's definitely not cheap.

But, everyone was disappointed when it was time to leave... (A sign of a truly great trip!)

And I'd love to return again someday!
