The Hale Hapu'u is a stunning, renovated home with two large king rooms and sleeping space for two additional teens or children in the large double living room. There are three full bathrooms and a kitchen with every major (and most minor) appliance including microwave and dishwasher. The large back deck has a table for eating or smoking, a hammock...

High def tv with premium satellite channels is included and there is a high def tv in the living room as well as a new high def tv in the forest room.

This home features cathedral ceilings, central wood burning fireplace, a custom gourmet kitchen with Koa cabinets, granite counters, etched glass, and many antiques throughout.
You will love the extra large, luxurious custom bathrooms - they are gorgeous with roomy tiled showers and exquisite forest views - except the third bathroom off the living room which has less views and a tub/shower combo. The main house upstairs suite bathroom has two pedestal sinks and the forest room bathroom has Koa cabinets and granite counters.
Other exceptional features include a massive covered deck with four person soft tub and table and chairs overlooking the lawn and the forest that blankets you in true serenity.

I am a Realtor/Broker and Artist and have lived in Volcano over 10 years now. I have also lived on Maui, Oahu and spent much time on Kauai so I can help you plan your trip throughout the islands.
My family is very active and love the local activities - our favorites are hiking Kilauea-Iki and picnicking at Bird Park.
Volcano is one of the most magical places on earth. The tropical rain forest - the only one of its kind in the U.S., the active Volcano and the amazing beauty of this area are all part of why I fell in love with Volcano.
The weather here is just about perfect - especially if you like rain!
If you spend time here you will come to believe in the power and magic of Pele.
The Hale Hapu'u is just a minute from the fabulous early Sunday Volcano Farmer's Market at the Cooper Center/playground/skatepark. Another minute and you are in Volcano Village with wonderful restaurants, shops and our intimate post office.
Just another minute down the road and you are at the entrance to the Volcanoes National Park.
Another minute and you pass the Volcano Golf Course, Country Club and Winery.
And just one minute more and you pass Mauna Loa Road which takes you to the enchanting Bird Park with picnic areas and more...
We just spent three nights at Hale Hapu'u for our visit to Volcano National Park. We loved everything about the house and grounds: the open layout of the house, the comfortable lounge areas and the welcoming back deck to relax and to listen to the sounds of the rainforest. The kitchen was extremely well stocked for a rental house; we found everything we were looking for. As for location and proximity to VNP, Hale Hapu'u could not be beat; we were in the park within 10 minutes. This made it easy to go to the park in the morning to explore and hike, take a midday rest and then return in the evening to view the caldera glow and hike to the lava flow. We would absolutely recommend this property and Krish was a pleasure to work with. Mahalo Krish!
Great location and fabulous property that was well maintained and Zen like in the experience of being in a tropical rainforest. The proximal location to the volcano national part was great and Krish was very helpful about suggesting grocery stores on the way in given the distant location from Hilo. We made it to the lava flow viewing area as well which was a real treat. I would come back in a heartbeat and hike some more in the park! Five stars for sure!
This is one of those rare times where the reality was better than the pictures online. Our family of 5 had a fantastic time at this peaceful and beautiful home in a magical rainforest setting. Every detail was outstanding, from the glass-walled walk-in showers to the hot tub on the deck to the well-appointed kitchen, I could go on and on. We appreciated the local fruit and coffee left for us by the owner. It was a perfect location for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The owner is extremely responsive and provided wonderful suggestions of restaurants, hikes, etc.
This was our second time staying at Hale Hapu'u and it certainly won't be our last! The kitchen is amazingly well-stocked with everything you'll need to prepare the food that you get in nearby Volcano Village....Sunday Farmer's Market...roadside fruit stands. The fireplace in the middle of the massive cabin is amazing - plenty of dry, split wood to keep make a magical cabin even more magical! Huge fern trees, bamboo, peace, and quiet. Just a short hop to the amazing Volcanos Park. You will love it.
This is a fantastic house, just as advertised.
It is very close to the National Park entrance making it easy to pop in and out of the park. And it is right on the edge of the little village of Volcano so you have easy access to the restaurants etc.
The owner was very responsive when we we were planning our trip and helped us out right away while we were there.
If you are looking for a place to relax this is it! Great kitchen, beautiful space, loved the fireplace!
Few traveller recommendations:
- Definitely do the longer hike in the park that takes you across the crater -- amazing!
- The Thai restaurant is great (and this is coming from a former Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand)
- Stop in Hilo and stock up on groceries (barely anything in Volcano) -- the owner recommended the KTA supermarket and it was great with lots of local Hawaiian fare.
- A side trip to snorkel in at the thermal pools in Pahao was totally worth it.
Enjoy! You'll be really glad you rented this lovely home.
I think there are probably a lot of nice places to stay around Hilo, but we don't have any interest in finding them. Hale Hapu'U is where we stay in Hilo. Period. Having spent three nights there, we felt SOOO comfortable. It took us a full day to stop yammering to each other about how awesome the place is and just start enjoying it.
Cosmetically, it's really nice to look at. Plenty of natural wood, koa, bamboo, etc. Granite counter tops. Nicely lit; good control of the lighting, etc. Seating options are plentiful and comfortable. The kitchen is well provisioned should you decide to do some cooking. Showers are amazing - with glass exterior walls (don't worry, they're frosted, and the grounds are private) so you can almost feel like you're outside. The forset room, which we also rented, is on the opposite side of the place from the other bedroom making it ideal for privacy.
But the best (and most central) feature is the 360 degree fireplace. We built a fire one evening and enjoyed the warmth and glow all evening.
The grounds are quite private and quiet; nice for enjoying the hot tub in the evening, and for sleeping.
Krish took excellent care of us. His attention to detail is awesome. Little things, like putting clear instructions for using the WiFi in the drawer under the modem on the kitchen counter. Everything was like that. There was fruit and danish for us to eat upon arrival. Coffee for the morning. The hot tub was clean and set to go. The place was so clean; we later found out that Krish had stopped by before we got there, and cleaned it again because he wasn't satisfied with how clean it already was!
Our only regret was that we didn't have more time to spend there.
Volcanoes National Park, Volcano Farmers Market, Volcano Winery, wonderful hiking, picnicking, bird park
