We had a wonderful time. We live in a rural area so this was perfect for us. My husband can't do the typical tourist area for more than a couple days. So to convince him to spend a month in Florida this fit the bill. Relaxing, private and interesting. Will be back!!

Relaxation on the Ranch

  • 5 of 5

My wife Ruth and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Jeanne and Harry Lewis' ranch. It was neat and clean, comfortable and tastefully furnished.

We felt welcome from the very beginning, finding a gift basket and note from Jeanne on the kitchen counter upon our arrival. Harry stopped over for a nice chat the second morning, giving us a little history of his life and their home.

Jeanne, unfortunately, was ill during our visit, so we never got to meet her in person. But that didn't prevent her from staying in touch through email, both during the visit and after. She and Harry take obvious pride in their place, and enjoy sharing it with others. That makes for a very pleasant experience for renters.

We thought to ourselves can the past reviews be true? Was this ranch oasis all they claimed it to be? The answer is a resounding Yes!! Harry and Jeannie were wonderful hosts at this escape just a 20 minute ride from the beautiful city of Sarasota. We had a wonderful stay the month of Febuary enjoying the beach, arts, entertainment and great restaurants and how nice it was to open those gates and drive down a dirt road to our own quiet haven of rest at the ranch! We didn't miss CT. winter weather one bit.!!!!

Owner's Response: Our ranch rental is surely a peaceful place yet close enough to the many downtown offerings, and beaches, that renters can enjoy both!

At Home on the Range

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect location for those who wish to experience the peace and quiet of 'Old Florida' yet be near enough to the beaches, shopping, restaurants, art and culture of present day Sarasota and environs. Ten miles East of Interstate 75, Old Myakka is a different world indeed.

A mile off the paved road, this beautiful ranch house and attached rental wing are surrounded by pasture, woods, and of course cattle. Upon arrival, we found the unit to be replete with every amenity we could wish for, including a thoughtful supply of basic foods, fruit, drink, and toiletries. The apartment lacked nothing, and included a dishwasher, laundry room, two televisions, wi-fi, and much more.

The owners, Jeanne and Harry answered any questions we had about the property and the area in general. They were extremely helpful and friendly without ever being intrusive.

We spent three relaxed and wonderful weeks there, look forward to returning, and would recommend it highly to anyone who wants to get away from the usual traffic, congestion, and crowds. Here one can unwind in a truly bucolic setting.

Wonderful peaceful setting!

Very well kept, neat as a pin guest home on a large ranch. Great "old Flirida" feel. Owners were very attentive and helpful- I would definitely recommend this as a nice alternative to the hectic Florida beach scene!

Everything we were hoping for--and then some!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were looking to escape the gray, overcast and cold Midwest winter for a week. We searched for a rental near the beach in the Sarasota/AMI/Longboat/Siesta Key area, but everything affordable was booked solid.

We regrouped and defined our “must-haves” for this trip: 1.) Warm weather; 2.) peace and quiet; and 3.) something within our budget.

A broader, more comprehensive search turned up an interesting (and affordable) alternative: a small rental unit attached to the main house on a working cattle farm, just 45 minutes inland from Sarasota, Florida.

The rental is a former "mother-in-law" addition with one bedroom, a full bath, a small living room, and a fully-equipped, full-sized kitchen. Although the unit and the main house are connected (they share a common wall), the unit is quite private, with its own entrance and utilities (including cable). Breakfast is not provided, it had a very "bed-and-breakfast” feel to it. The unit was beautifully decorated, and spotless. We were warmly greeted by Jeanne Lewis, who provided us with a quick tour of the unit, as well as a comprehensive “Welcome Book” that contained lots of information about the farm, things to see (including wildlife), and some places to explore.

The unit is indeed situated in the middle of a 100-acre working cattle farm, which is further surrounded by another 400 acres of otherwise unoccupied land (unless you count the neighbors’ cattle). As such…it’s quiet. No airplanes, no highway noise, no sirens. To get there, you’ll drive more than a half-mile off the main road, and then down a nearly half-mile private drive to the main house. Jeanne and her husband, Harry, both encouraged us to explore any part of the farm we’d like, and Harry explained which gates to use, and what paths to walk, in order to get to some prime wildlife-watching spots.

Jeanne and Harry Lewis are, by a wide margin, the most prepared and thoughtful property owners that we have encountered in many years of renting in Florida. You will not be treated as a “renter”—rather, you will be greeted as a family guest and friend. They are very attentive, yet completely unobtrusive, hosts. The cows are very friendly, too. ;)

Overall, we could not have asked for anything more in a winter “getaway” location in sunny, warm Florida. We look forward to visiting Jeanne and Harry at Lark’s Nest Farms again in the future!
