Named for its Union Street location and domestic tranquility, A MORE PERFECT UNION is one minute's walk from the exact center of town. This beautiful, art-filled home makes a deliciously comfortable base for a weekend in Hudson. It's ideal for wedding guests, and well-provisioned enough to feel and function like home for longer-term stays.
Staying here feels like borrowing the immaculate home of a friend who's supplied every little thing you could need, including vibrant art—from local folk artist Earl Swanigan to Spanish abstract expressionist Isabel Santaló to surrealist John Fenton—and a wonderfully cozy ambiance. The house, whose wide old floorboards feel warm and solid underfoot, blends historic Federal-style construction with an exuberant mélange of art and other eclectic furnishings that delight the eye and nourish the soul.
Built long before the Civil War, the public spaces—living room, dining room and kitchen—are roomy with high ceilings. The bedrooms (one with a queen-size bed, two with doubles) are cozy, and generously appointed with soft linens, blankets, pillows and rugs. All the beds are super comfortable, and there's a queen-size futon couch in the living room.
With all the necessities and niceties of home provided, including a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, Cuisinart, blender, old-fashioned juicer, dishwasher, pots, and enough utensils to stock a Sur la Table outlet) and a pantry with staples, you can cook pretty much anything. The bathroom is stocked with toiletries including toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, Band-Aids, and blow dryer—plus a very comfortable clawfoot tub and enough white towels to make Leona Helmsley weep.
There's a propane barbecue and lots of seating in the yin-yang buddha garden, a lush oasis where hummingbirds flit through orange trumpet flowers all summer long.
