Coastal Living featured Turtle House and its artist/proprietress in April 09! An enchanting tropical retreat situated on a tiny little lane in Old Town Key West. Hidden beyond the gate of a 6 ft. weathered wooden fence, two historic cigar maker’s cottages joined by a deck and an elaborate garden.
Turtle House is appointed with beautiful, artful dishes and linens and cookware that offers a comfortable elegance without losing its rustic simplicity. Its owner offers to her guests the beauty she has created for her own inspiration. Cloistered within a periphery of green hedges for total privacy, the lush garden is teaming with butterflies and birdsongs, extinct native plantings original to the island, palms, lemon trees, key limes and exotics like the aromatic ylang ylang which is the basis of Chanel #5! The covered breezeway connects the two cottages and serves as an indoor outdoor dining area: a rustic wooden table under a large wooden ceiling fan.
The master suite is its own cottage with cathedral ceilings and pristine white floors, a king bed and a large desk with a comfortable ergonomic desk chair provides a perfect perch for work or rest. An indoor/outdoor bath connects to the master suite and is also accessible from the deck.
enjoy the privacy of Turtle House or bike through Old Town Key West, dine on Duval Street, bike to Fort Zachary Taylor beach....all a stone's throw away. Find inspiration and respite in the unique hide away! TURTLE HOUSE.
Please note, Turtle House is not available for short term rental. 30 day minimum.
I am a painter, dividing my time between NYC and Key West. Turtle House is my haven. Tenants seem to fall in love it as their own during their stay. The property has a charm about it, hard to describe....
I have worked with great pleasure to create a magical domain, inside and out, for all to enjoy.
Key West is as far south as you can go without leaving the country. The village is unusual and captivating for its architecture and its culture. It feels both wonderfully remote and yet we have access to all amenities...sophisticated theater, art, music ... Fed Ex, grocery stores, gourmet bakeries, apple computer store, etc.
When I am here, I feel I can step out the gate and delight in a very lively social life ... or hide in my studio, and work, undisturbed for days!
The home and environment of this accomplished painter is full of Old Key West charm. It was easy to hop on our bikes and explore Old Town, the beaches, the harbor (though I was perfectly happy hiding out in the garden!!!!) The abundant gardens, the unique open-air architecture, the lovely linens and towels and well-stocked kitchen made our stay comfortable and romantic. Turtle House is indeed an oasis of serenity, beauty, and creativity.
Off a shaded lane find "Turtle House," a cottage that merges so naturally with it's gardens and towering palms that "inside, outside" is forgotten. The urge to explore becomes compelling, as opening one louvered door after another or opening the sliding doors to an expanse of weathered deck brings not only rushes of surprise at the varied views of an exquisite, small rain forest, but the comfort of finding any modern convenience. Discover fine linens, wonderful mattresses, unique earthenware dishes...even silverware with burnished handles... even gleaming champagne glasses amidst wooden bowls. Beautiful and creative. It is an adventure of a house, perhaps like the places you created as a child or dream about now.
When we first entered the Turtle House we knew it would be the place for us. The lush garden and wood accents enveloped our being. We so needed a place to unwind and totally relax and decompress away from our busy lives. We stayed here 10 beautiful days and settled in and felt very welcomed by the owner. The dipping pool was enjoyable on those hot days. So nice to be in a private home and not a resort. The history of the house was so interesting. We Rented bikes at Eaton a few blocks up( they also deliver but book online and get 10% off).
It was very quiet at night but a short walk to busy Duval and some of the best restaurants we have ever eaten at. Our favourite being Santio Bodega on Petronia. Lots to see and do in Key West. Dry Tortuga tour was fabulous as well as Fort Zachery beach.
Thank you to Susan we would love to return anytime.

I loved Turtle house, private, well appointed and super location. Just a short walk or bike ride to Duval St. The two houses are very comfortable, nice linens and the the garden is very tranquil even though the main street is one block away. Very helpful owner, who directed me to all the best art galleries. I will stay again when I return next year.
Key West Artist private hideaway. Delight in the uniqueness of this property which was designed by the artist and her late husband, an architect. It has been featured in several magazines, including the April 2009 edition of Coastal Living Magazine. Turtle House is enchantingly simple ... a wonderful vacation retreat. Behind the six foot fence, you will find the magic and charm of Old Key West along with a black tiled heated jacuzzi with a flowering trellis and all the amenities of modern living.
