This beautifully renovated colonial apartment has one of the best views in all of Old San Juan. From its three big balcony windows you look out over the 500 year-old San Cristobal Castle and over the city walls, onto a panoramic ocean view. Swing the Spanish shutters open and let the sun and ocean breeze into your bedroom in the morning. Pull up a chair and read a book looking out over the Atlantic. It's a wonderful place to relax for a week or more (**4 night minimum stay please**)
The apartment is spacious (1150 square feet) and architecturally designed with very high ceilings and interior archways. It’s on the second floor of a bright blue colonial two-story building and takes up the entire ocean view side (the entrance is on Calle del Sol but the apartment is actually on Calle Norzagaray so the views are unobstructed). It has two bedrooms - a master bedroom (with the view right from your bed) and a very nice medium-sized bedroom - each with its own Spanish-tiled bathroom for privacy. The living room space, dining area and kitchen are all open, and connect to an indoor patio where the occasional afternoon rain can be heard coming down through the open skylight. This also allows for a refreshing cross-ventilation, so the air conditioners are usually only necessary on very hot days. The place is furnished with traditional plantation-style furniture in dark hardwood - the two queen beds are modern and comfy.
We love this apartment, and if you’re like us you might be tempted to spend a lot of time just relaxing inside, but you have to get out and experience Old San Juan. The location is super-convenient:
• You’re right next to the San Cristobal Castle which, along with El Morro just a few blocks away, are the two oldest and best restored military fortresses in the Western hemisphere.
• There is a scenic walk (or free trolley) along the city wall connecting the two castles, with grassy parks along the way where the locals fly kites (you can buy a kite for $3 from the guy who sells piraguas from a cart).
• Walk 10 minutes the other way and you get to a nice small beach, and a little further is a bigger beach and then Condado, the more modern and trendy side of San Juan.
• There are great restaurants and bars within a few blocks of the apartment, as well as live music, great shopping, art galleries, quaint museums, and all the necessary conveniences (supermarket, pharmacy, etc).
• All of the main historic sites are within a 10-minute walk. Most of the streets in the area are made of Italian blue cobblestone that dates back to the 16th century, and the whole place - pastel buildings, lively people, artsy vibe, and tropical warmth - feels like unique little jewel.
Don’t waste your money on a hotel with no view, no kitchen, and no privacy, or on a standard apartment that’s more or less the same as any other. Stay in our wonderful condo and be part of the real Old San Juan experience. **please note: the apartment is in a residential building - guests must be willing to respect our rules and maintain a peaceful and quiet environment. No parties or loud behavior is allowed, and mature guests are preferred.

Location was perfect. Ocean breezes in the living room and one of the bedrooms were great with a view of the ocean. You could walk to wonderful restaurants to eat out or you could stay in and cook a meal in the apartment kitchen. I loved the ability to go anywhere in Old San Juan to sightsee or visit historical places and museums. Apartment was well maintained and very clean. Kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms were up to date. Only misfortune (and not the norm) was our electricity went out two nights in a row due to a city generator on the blink. So it got a little warm in the bedrooms. I will recommend it to friends and family. We stayed 3 nights.
Our January 2016 visit to this wonderful apartment was great. We were met by a young man who showed us everything that we needed to know about the rooms and he even made some suggestions for dining and site seeing. He was very cordial and helpful. When we opened the living area shutters to the view of the water and the fort, we were astonished. The view was breathtaking, the waves were crashing against the fortification walls and the breezes were so refreshing. We probably stayed in the apartment more than we anticipated because we loved the view and the breezes. People walking on the street below looked up in envy at us as we sipped on a cold drink and watched the waves. The kitchen is very modern and has all of the amenities needed for a pleasant stay. There is an garden next to the kitchen which is open to the sky. What a great idea and was not a problem. We only used one bedroom, but used both baths. The bedroom beside the living area is huge and also has shutters which open to the fabulous views. Both baths were clean and quite usable. We never had a problem with the air conditioning or the water. Everything worked very well. The location of this apartment is excellent for the views, for catching the shuttle bus and for walking around the city. I made a few simple suggestions the owner about how to make this vacation apartment an A+ rating. I would recommend this great apartment to anyone who can climb a few stairs.
This was the first time I had used VRBO, so was a little nervous about what I would find when I arrived at the property. I had been in text contact with the local representative who would meet me at the apartment after arrival. We were able to meet the local representative at the apartment. After a climb to the second floor, we were amazed at how large the apartment was, and the fact that it included a section of open roof. When the local rep opened the 3 sets of Spanish doors I was awed by not only the cool breeze from the ocean, but by the spectacular view. The photos on the website cannot do justice to this view! from the apartment we were able to see one of the forts, a vast view of the ocean along with the mouth of San Juan harbor. I spent a lot of time just hanging out of one of the doors, taking in this spectacular view.
The rest of the apartment was great. Both bedrooms had air conditioning that worked like a champ. Although the water pressure in the showers was low, it was not a problem. The kitchen was modern and very clean.
The location was extremely convenient, being on block up from the main plaza (Plaza de Colon). If you go, do yourself a favor...save a couple of days to just wander the streets of old San Juan, a European city, transplanted to an island paradise. The city is much smaller than the tourist map indicates and it does not take long to walk to every corner of the old city. A half day trip to the rain forest is a must, and there are many reputable tour companies you can book with. Was not a big fan of the Bacardi factory tour (very underwhelming).
The check out process was easy and we were even given a late one, due to a late flight.
When I return to Puerto Rico, I plan to stay here again!
You cannot beat this location!!! The view from the villa-style flat, from the living room and master bedroom, is incredible!! You stand at the railing of antique wooden French doors and see the most beautiful ocean, waves breaking at the foot of the oldest, most historic, walls of the Old Fort! Breathtaking! The flat is located in the best possible location to see all of old San Juan! It sits at the top of the hill, with amazing views and ocean breezes, with cobblestone historic scenic streets to wander through... Such beautiful historic homes!
The owner is the perfect host, from booking, to checking in and out and the return of deposit- so easy! She was 100% top notch in terms of professionalism and hospitality !
The rooms are spacious, kitchen very well equipped and very very clean. The atrium was delightful - when it rained and when birds flew in for a dip in the fountain!
We LOVED our stay in this delightful home and cannot wait to return again some day!!
The apartment was comfortable, perfect for two couples, accurately described in the listing, clean and well-maintained for a building of its age. Wanda was wonderful, very helpful, met us at the apartment and saw us off when we left. The owners provided a good list of restaurants nearby. We especially enjoyed Il Barcaro Venezia in Calle de la Cruz. All of Old San Juan is within walking distance, and the free tourist trolley stops at the end of Calle Sol less than a block from the apartment. That made exploring easy. It is a steep walk up Calle O'Donnell from the Plaza Colon, and 25 stairs up to the apartment's front door, so not a good fit for persons with limited stamina or mobility but we found we could avoid the uphill climb by accessing Calle Sol farther west. The building is built with traditional ventilation (open central courtyard) so the strong breeze off the ocean kept the main living areas comfortable all day and the air conditioning in the bedrooms worked well. Ear plugs for sleeping are a good idea as San Juan can be noisy and there is construction going on down the block. We enjoyed being in a real (non-touristy) neighborhood. Everyone we met was friendly and welcoming. We especially loved the free concerts Saturday nights at the waterside near Darsena Plaza and Sunday evenings on Paseo de la Princesa where local musicians play "oldies" and people dance or sing along.
The apartment was old and not fancy, which made it feel authentic. Definitely clean and airy just like the photos. Great location. We had a wonderful time walking around the city and visiting the forts. The sound of crashing waves was beautiful and the views are spectacular, but there is also a tremendous amount of road noise and late night activity under the master bedroom window. The air conditioner helped but it means keeping the shutters closed at night. Also, there is no door between the bathroom and bedroom in the second bedroom. Overall a good place to stay.
