super convenient to the subway

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Boston. This place was so convenient to the subway, it made getting around without a car very easy. The rooms were very small, but there were 3 bedrooms which is what we needed. We liked the ability to cook in the apartment. The market on the corner had a good selection of the foods we needed to supply meals at home. The family room was roomy and comfortable for us when we wanted to be together. The bedrooms, bathroom, and kitchen were very small but clean. The beds squeaked if you sat on the edge, a problem if you have to get up at night to go to the bathroom, and you are sharing the bed. I liked the neighborhood feel of the place. Our contact person answered quickly when we had a question.

Old, dingy, hot, and cramped

  • 1 of 5

If all you want is a place to sleep near a T stop with fast internet, this place is perfect. But don't be fooled by the pictures, which appear to show a light, airy, spacious apartment, because what you get is dingy and cramped.

The walls are not white like in the photos. They are poorly patched, poorly painted paneling showing excessive wear and tear, including duct-taped patches in the bathroom. This is an old place with a DIY makeover that apparently consisted of spray-painting everything white in the distant past, including the drop ceiling panels; many have dried drips hanging from them. Dirty hand-prints adorn door frames, scuffs and marks adorn the walls. The floor leading into the bathroom is coated in grime, scuffed clean in the center by many footsteps. Wall switches vary in color, depending on how much build-up they have; none are clean. Despite the general grime, we did not see any pests, so that was a plus.

The AC consisted of one window unit in the living room. When we complained of the heat, the manager put a second window unit in the kitchen. (Both units left gaps open to the outside heat and bugs.) There was no AC in the bedrooms, and if you closed the doors, no ventilation - the temperature in those rooms quickly became unbearable in August, even with fans. Even with the doors open, the rooms were very warm. There were two fans, but three bedrooms; we asked for a third fan but never got it, so one of us ended up on the couch. On the plus side, the noise of the AC units and fans masked most of the street noise.

There are very few outlets that are not in use. The photo of the kitchen shows the coffee maker & toaster, but they aren't plugged in. There is one outlet behind the microwave, but no available counterspace; you'd have to move the microwave to use it. When we took the toaster into a bedroom to plug it in, we found it didn't work anyway. The kitchen floor, 1-2 inches higher than the rest of the floor, is connected with a home-made plywood ramp. Vinyl tiles have curled up and show the subfloor. The bathroom door is cracked; the doorstop is a balled-up plastic bag. The bathroom towel bar is gone; all that remains is one mounting post. Water pressure varies from poor to mediocre. The bedroom with the queen bed has no place for clothes or luggage; even our suitcase was too big for the tiny "closet," and the limited floor space is needed for walking. (We put our clothes in the adjoining kitchen, the only place with room.)

It was just OK.

  • 3 of 5

The exterior and the inside stairway is awful. The apartment itself was just OK. But we were really disappointed, staying in the middle of July, that the apartment was advertised with AC and in reality there was only 1 portable AC unit in the living room. The back 2 bedrooms & kitchen got NO AC at all. The living room was the nicest part. All 3 beds were very creaky and uncomfortable. The knives and some other kitchen supplies were very dirty. We had to really search for on-street parking, but did finally find something 2 blocks away. The location to the T was the only redeeming factor. We will not stay here again.
