My husband and two teenage sons and I stayed here from 8/21-8/27/2016, and it was hands down a wonderful experience. Stella, the neighbor, met us the first day and showed us around, gave us suggestions for restaurants, showed us her favorite cafe and locals farner's market, and thoughtfully stocked a bit of coffee and laundry detergent for us. One day, she made us homemade pesto, which we ate for dinner on one of the 3 terraces, with views of most of Old Florence. That meal was one of our best in Florence! Make friends with Stella--she's a lovely person, the embodiment of Italian generosity and makes a mean pesto! She also arranged a taxi for us for a 4:30am departure.
The apartment does indeed have 123 steps to the living room and more steps to the terraces and upper bedrooms, but hey, daily wine, pasta, and gelato... We had travel backpacks and were quite pleased that we did not have roller bags or big suitcases. There are 3 bedrooms with plenty of space, 2 full baths, a cozy but workable kitchen, comfy couches, and the VIEWS. Really, we had to balance all we wanted to do in the city with all the time we wanted to spend enjoying our apartment. Half of our dinners were at home, outside enjoying the sunset and happy din of the city. The AC was most welcome, as it was very hot last week (every day, we took a mid afternoon siesta from our touring efforts). Despite being a 13th century building, the apartment has every modern convenience, including great water pressure, and had all the non-food essentials you could need.
The pizza place across the street is fantastic, and there's a grocery around the corner. All major sites are within easy walking distance. We would absolutely stay here again.
Thank you for a wonderful home away from home!!!
This is the most wonderful and charming apartment you could hope for. Yes there are over 100 steps uand if you have any physical limitations this will not be a good choice for you. However..... After you get your luggage to the top you will have the most AMAZING views of Florence that cannot be beat! We were breathless when we stepped out onto the top terrace and there was the Duomo in front of us. This is what we were looking for. We enjoyed sitting outside and taking in the sights and sounds from our panoramic viewpoint. Inside the apartment we had plenty of room for my husband and myself and the three 18 year old boys we were travelling with. The apartment was clean, both bathrooms were spotless and everything worked perfectly. We also had a lovely kitchen with all of the supplies you might need if you decide to cook up a great meal for yourself.
The apartment was simply amazing! Yes, there are a lot of steps, but to say it is worth it is an understatement. From the wonderful neighbor that helped get us settled, to the cleanliness, to the nice bottle of regional wine to greet us-everything was perfect. It was a terribly hot week when we were there but the AC worked great and the evening breezes on the rooftop terrace made our apartment a welcome oasis at the end of each day. Thank you!
A spacious, well-equipped apartment with wonderful views from its three terraces. Photos can not really do justice to the views of the Duomo dome and campanile one way, the towers of the Bargello, Badia and Palazzo Vecchio the other way, and the hillsides on both sides of the valley too. If you can cope with the steps (there are quite a few, but they are not steep or narrow), stay here!
Wow...where do we start??? This apartment is incredible! From the location of the apartment (WOW - so close to the Duomo), to the layout and cleanliness of the apartment, everything was perfect! This apartment has such a wonderful layout with beautiful balconies, the top terrace high above all the others and a wonderful panoramic view of Florence. We didn't need for anything...although we were prepared with all of our toiletries, there was plenty amenities available if we were needing of any. If there was something that was in need, there was a market right around the corner along with fresh fruit and veggie stands very close by.
Now, let me brag just a moment about the wonderful neighbor, Stella. She met us upon our arrival and what a wonderful, kind, and knowledgeable woman she is! She showed us around the apartment, gave us many suggestions on restaurants and places to see (she was spot on), she even surprised our family with a special Italian treat. Thank you again Stella for being a wonderful host and now what I call friend.
If we are able to make it back to Florence, we will definitely return to stay here.
For those who are less active or do not like climbing stairs, there is no lift and this apartment is on the top floor. Approximately 120 steps. However, we didn't mind the steps. We were walking and climbing all over Italy, so this didn't bother us in the slightest. There were 5 of us....my husband (45), myself (43), daughter-in-law (26), daughter (18), and little daughter (10)...none of us had any problems climbing the steps even after a day of sightseeing.
Thank you again for allowing my family to spend our vacation in your beautiful apartment and city. We hope to return one day. Best wishes from the Thompson Family
Practicalities first: There are 102 steps up- punctuated by multiple, wide landings- from street level to the entry hall of this 3 bedroom, 2 bath apt. From the entry hall to the 1st floor- dining area, living room, kitchen, master bedroom, both bathrooms- there are 20 steps more. Since this building was built in the 1500s there is no elevator. If stair climbing is a difficulty this is something which needs to be considered.
The reward for climbing stairs is a matchless, stunning view of the Duomo &, indeed, from the top deck (there are 2, complete with table & chairs, plus an intermediate landing) of all of Firenze- an unimpeded, 360 degree panorama.
The apt is located in via del Proconsolo. If one gets the free Tourist Map of Firenze (nearest Tourist info: Piazza Duomo, perhaps 200m from the apt) & places a pin in the center of the map it will land on via del Proconsolo. The Duomo is 200m to the N, the SMN train station is 15 minutes to the NW, the Bargello is just down the street to the S, the Ponte Vecchio & Uffizi are slightly SW, Santa Croce to the SE, the Accademia slightly NE, the central market to the NW. A good grocery (Orange City Conad) is about 500m away, but a Carrefour, Spar, fruit vendors & a good butcher are even closer by. Yellow Bar (30m from the apt) is open until 12am, is inexpensive & serves thin crust pizza, calzone & handmade pasta. It's excellent. Morning coffee: that's Bar 16 on the next corner (50m)- a latte is e1.50 (the hot chocolate is also great).
The apt was clean & everything worked. Miss Ana met us punctually & took care of all arrival paperwork . Stella showed us around & provided much information about Firenze, both its history & recommended places to visit. We met with Stella several times during our stay & very much enjoyed her company. On the last day she made sure a taxi was reserved for our 5am trip to the FLR airport.
As others have pointed out, Internet connectivity was spotty. As we left, Stella told us she was switching providers so this shouldn't be a problem in the future. The beds in all 3 bedrooms were comfortable, both bathroom showers worked well- there was plenty of hot water & the apt was well-heated (our visit was in Dec). The kitchen is a bit constrained; it has a 4-burner gas stove, sink, decent refrigerator, microwave, cutting board & plenty of pots & pans but it's really a one-person space.
For location & view this apt is unmatched, we definitely recommend it.
