2 Bedroom, 2.5 Bathroom, Sleeps 6

If you're looking for the peace and seclusion of a home in the woods, with views to die for, but don't feature driving long miles to reach the nearest store or restaurant, this is the place for you. It's a custom-built forest hideaway that's completely private, yet only steps from hiking trails, shopping, restaurants, even a health club. Perched atop a cliff, surrounded by two and a half acres of woods, with flower and rock gardens, the 2-bedroom, 2 1/2-bathroom home has two working fireplaces (and lots of firewood).

It's beautifully furnished in country-antique style, and is full of books, music and art. (It would be a ideal for a writer, artist, musician or academic.) There's a spacious deck overlooking Esopus Creek with a panoramic view of the Catskills eight miles away, plus a large screened porch, all equipped for al fresco dining.

Amenities: There's large-screen TV with DVD, wi-fi, a fine stereo system, a well-equipped eat-in kitchen with a view. Washer and dryer in separate laundry room. It sleeps six, in large master bedroom with queen, and on two full convertibles. Spacious and elegant living room with mountain views, formal dining room, wood-paneled den opening to the deck. Parking space in a two-car garage, lots of additional parking in long driveway.

Location: Less than five minutes from the heart of Saugerties (and its Thruway exit, less than 2 hours from the George Washington Bridge) and local bus service to New York City; 15 minutes from Kingston shopping malls, 15 minutes to Woodstock, half an hour to skiing at Hunter Mountain, convenient to HITS.

Local amenities: Esopus Bend Nature Preserve, with extensive hiking trails and riverside walks, is around the corner. Falling Waters Preserve, with spectacular trails along the Hudson River, is five minutes away. Saugerties hosts the summer HITS, the Garlic and Mums festivals in the fall, a weekly farmer's market, and the festive First Friday each month, with special events at its restaurants and galleries. Nearby Woodstock is loaded with charm and fine restaurants and galleries, and hosts the summer Maverick concerts and year-round music events. Bard College, 20 minutes away, has an attractive concert and opera schedule and a terrific art museum.

Suitability: No smoking, no pets.

Prices: We especially welcome long term stays, for which the rates are significantly discounted as follows: $850/week, $2,500/month, and $12,000/6 months. Minimum stay: 7 days. Maximum stay: 6 months.

We are a professional couple who work in publishing, and have enjoyed living in this house in every season for many years.

Why barbara braun chose Saugerties

We constantly marvel at its comfort, its peaceful wooded setting and marvelous mt. views, also its close proximity to all the delights of the Hudson Valley area.

Amazing house for weekend getaways!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriends and I decided to escape NYC for a winter weekend - and were lucky enough to find this gem of a house in the cutest town! The house is spacious, beautiful, cozy, artfully decorated and there are two fireplaces! The kitchen is big enough for 2-3 people to be cooking at one time, which is always a plus. The porches are a huge bonus - and have beautiful views!! When I return this Summer, I can't wait to bbq and eat on the deck, while watching the sunset over the mountains. Barbara and John were attentive and very organized -- the checking in process was a breeze and we had everything we needed for a fabulous, relaxing weekend. My friends and I truly had a weekend we will never forget!

Beautiful location and lovely home

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful and comfortable stay over a long weekend. The fireplaces were perfect as the weather was unseasonably cold. Our only concern was the house had an overwhelming smell of moth balls, and there were cobwebs and bugs everywhere. But that was our only issue. The view from the home was breathtaking.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

Stayed here for July 4th weekend and had a great time. The listing undersells how great the view from the deck is, we spent most of our time sitting outside. The kitchen could have been a bit cleaner on our arrival, but that was a minor issue.

We had a lovely time and found the house to be very charming. The views from the deck are wonderful and just what you're hoping for when you're in the country. The house is very comfortable, and convenient to town.
