About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

What makes this house unique

Capitol Hill townhouses are quaint but tend to be very deep and narrow, and in consequence dark. This house is the antithesis of that, with its open floor plan and skylights. It is a whole-house rental, not a basement or condo, and within the context of Capitol Hill's 19th century houses, is relatively large at 1700 square feet.

Great house in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

We were two families, with three adults and three teens. The house had plenty of room and had everything we needed to be comfortable. We were able to walk to the grocery store and a few restaurants. Quick Lyft rides to the Holocaust Museum and other sites. Will definitely rent again!

Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

We just returned home from our week long vacation in DC. 622C Street NE was the perfect location to allow for lots of walking. Close to the capitol, could walk to all museums and memorials. Safe neighborhood! The home itself was comfortable with nonstop hot water. We had no trouble finding parking if we drove our car someplace.

Bright, airy, clean, comfortable in a great neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our stay in Washington. It is bright, airy and comfortable without being over the top luxurious, which made it feel just like home. The beds are comfortable and the living room is a great place to hang out.

Walking Distance To Everything

  • 5 of 5

This home is the perfect place to stay if you see yourself walking to all that D.C. has to offer. Parking in the area is tight and I am thankful that we did not waste our money on a rental car when all the good stuff was within walking distance or easily accessible by Metro. Also, if you want to do day trips that might take a car, Union Station is just a few blocks away and you can rent a car for the day, as we did to get to Gettysburg.

Beds were very comfortable. Upstairs there is a shared bathroom with the 3 bedrooms and downstairs there is a 3/4 bath so that you don't HAVE to go upstairs. After touring each day, we came back to air-conditioned comfort and relaxed. We had Safeway deliver our food the first day we arrived and they were excellent. The kitchen was full of all the necessary equipment. We loved that there were plastic dishes for the kids so there were no worries about dropping things on the tile floor of the kitchen.

The living room furniture was comfortable and the master bedroom upstairs had a lovely chair/lamp combo in the bay window where I enjoyed reading in the evenings. The home was clean, comfortable, and in a safe neighborhood. We would certainly stay here again.

The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.
