Simple house on best beach on the island

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a simple place to stay that comes with an AMAZING experience, this is it! The sea turtles in the bay were incredible to watch each day. It's not like you see them once or twice during the week, you see them several times every day. Peter is a great man and helped us with everything we needed including giving advice on booking tours, restaurants and more. He was always available when we needed him and we can't thank him enough for such a wonderful vacation. I would recommend this vacation property to anyone!

The Perfect Place

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Sunset Cottage earlier this month. It was a special treat to celebrate my 50th birthday!! And what a dream come true!! It was our first time to Exuma and hopefully won't be our last. Peter was very helpful and generous! We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in a sweet little beach house. We heard the wonderfully peaceful sound of the waves day and night. We had a great time kayaking and enjoying the beautiful view! My favorite part was seeing the sea turtles!!!! Our last day, I waded out in the water in front of the house and saw seven sea turtles (or one turtle seven times!) ;+) Smitty's store is very close and we liked cooking meals and enjoying the cottage. The laundry facilities were also very beneficial. We rented a car so we could explore Exuma and little Exuma. I highly recommend going to Coco Plum Beach, Tropic of Cancer Beach, Santana's and going over to Stocking Island, Chat'n'chill on Sunday is really fun. The cottage is conveniently located near George Town and a lot of the local restaurants have live music - Rake'n'scrape. We really loved listening and dancing - everyone is so friendly. Hope you have an amazing vacation wherever you go but I know you won't be disappointed if you go to Exuma and stay in the Sunset Cottage.

Loved our stay at the Sunset Cottage on Hooper's Bay

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd visit to Exuma and we love staying on Hooper's Bay near Georgetown. We prefer staying in cottages rather than condos or home shares and the Sunset Cottage on Hooper's Bay was perfect for us. We found the cottage to be homey and cozy and perfect for the 2 of us. It has everything needed for a relaxing stay, and we enjoyed cooking and having our breakfast out of the oceanfront patio looking for sea turtles which swim by often. There were kayaks and paddle boards onsite for us to use, and paddling the incredible waters of Hooper's Bay was fantastic. There was an outdoor shower for rinsing off after time in the ocean, a washer and dryer onsite for doing laundry, a fully equipped kitchen and full size frig, plus ample beach towels and a cooler. We loved spending time out on the back patio just gazing out over the beauty of Hooper's Bay, and when motivated, grabbing a paddle board for some water time. We found the location to be extremely quiet, with the most noise coming from the waves and ocean, lol. At night we would go outside and check out a star filled sky that was breath taking.

The cottage is equipped with 2 AC units, but it was so comfortable at night in late Feb with the windows open that we never used the AC. Smitty's Market, the Fish Fry and Georgetown are just a short drive away. The cottage doesn't pretend to be perfect or high end, but we don't seek perfection or high end lodging, rather great value for our lodging dollar. And the cottage delivers this completely. From the very 1st day of our stay, we felt so at home and relaxed here. We are very fortunate to be able to travel and seek out places like the Sunset Cottage wherever we go. Thanks Peter for a great stay at the cottage and for the awesome boat tour of the Exuma Cays. See you on our next visit to Exuma.

Cosy beach house on the bay

  • 4 of 5

Sunset Cottage is a rough and tumble kind of a place, directly placed on Hooper's bay in Great Exuma. Sandals, this is not, but if you are looking for a simple, comfortable and perfectly located little spot to spend your vacation days then you cant go far wrong with this one. Do not come here expecting a glamorous spot to spend your time. Do come here if you want a perfect little porch to sit on, with all the necessary amenities to hand. Do come here if you want a comfy bed, loungers on your own little bit of beach and an "easy" approach to rental owner's involvement. Do not come here if you want to be waited on and/or have the owner available to you 24/7 (we saw Peter 3 times and that was adequate). Do come here if you want to experience the real Exuma.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Peter's little part of paradise. We would probably book again for our next trip and given that we have been to Exuma 5 times now, that says a lot. Book with confidence that the pictures are what you get, albeit a bit rough around the edges. Just go with the flow.....

Amazing location

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much to Peter for being such an amazing host. The Sunset Cottage is perfect. It is literally on the water. During high tide the waves will occasionally spray up onto the edge of the balcony, it is a great experience. Peter provides all of the necessary items, bottled water, dish soap, bath and beach towels, fresh bed linens, paper towels. There's even a small igloo cooler to pack picnic lunches for the beach. It is such a luxury to have the washer and dryer on site. Bring tide pods with you to do laundry. Smitty's grocery and liquor store has everything you need and is only 1/2 mile up the driveway. We did rent a car. Highly suggest this as you will want to explore the island. The jeep was a bit pricey ($140/day vs $60 for a small car) but we enjoyed the experience of driving it around the island. Some of the roads and driveways are extremely bumpy.

There are several spots close for good food and entertainment. Splash Bar at the Hideway Resort has good pizza, the Fish Fry is a series of individual operated beach shacks that offer a variety of food from Shirley's table top dining to BBQ on the grill at several spots. All was delicious. Stop by the Caribbean Flavour bar and have a drink with Marcus. Georgetown is a short drive in and has a larger market with a better variety of fresh fruits and veggies. Blu is a nice bar/ restaurant overlooking the marina. And Elvis's taxi leaves from the government dock to Stocking Island and Chat N Chill.

The Sunset Cottage has several sweet dogs that stop by regularly to ask for handouts. It was fun to watch them playing and wrestling with each other on the beach. The big black pup is nicknamed Homeless. He is particularly affectionate and very well trained. He will swim with you in the bay and even ride on the paddle board if you let him. The cottage has two paddle boards, a single kayak and a double kayak. The water in the bay is the most amazing turquoise blue and has sea turtles that will pop their heads up occasionally. Just a short paddle out is a separate private beach that is a slice of paradise and only accessible by the water.

We had such an amazing experience here that we hope to be able to return soon to do it again. When we do, we will happily return to Sunset Cottage to pick up where we left off.

Don't miss the Exuma Cay Adventure tour with Peter!

Beautiful beach vacation

  • 5 of 5

The location was amazing, we enjoyed our own private beach and the water was beautiful! There were paddle boards, kayaks and bikes available for our use. Peter took us on a fantastic island tour of the Exumas, it was the best tour I have ever done! Peter and Rita were great hosts and we would be happy to return.

Location

Car: necessary

Directions to house. Travel south from round about at airport which will be a right turn, you follow road pass a nice strip of beach

With nice homes along the way for about 5 miles or so. You will pass a tennis court on a curve and go up a hill where you see the ocean once on top of the hill about a half mile from this point you will pass The Bank of The Bahamas on your right will be 2 big blue buildings which is a plaza on the right. About a 1/2 mile from here on your right you will see the sign Sunset Cottages take that left and follow the signs. Peter's cell is 357-0390. If you see a Grocery Store, Smitty's that mean you pass the turn and then need to go back a few hundred feet then the turn will be on your right. Hope this is clear!
