Apokoronas is a historic and beautiful area of Crete with a landscape of wild mountains and fertile valleys. It was a place where emperors and lords of Byzantine Empire could reside and enjoy its' wealth and beauty. Vafes is one of the villages of Apokoronas (32km away from Chania and 28km away from Rethymno and the southern Crete). It's the only village of the prefecture of Chania which was declared a historic preservable place because of its' history and the beautiful traditional architecture.
“Patitiri” is a two-room apartment built of wood and stone. It has one bedroom with a double iron bed and two bathrooms. The one bath is built on a rock with a bathtub to the kitchen which has an old stone oven built on a rock that transports the visitor to another era. Next to the kitchen there is another bath and over the kitchen there is an ondas with a sofa bed that can host one or two people.
The visitor will surely impress by the space which is decorated with antiques and offers calm and relaxation. Outside the apartment there is a yard with trees of the area while on the terrace, visitors can enjoy the view of the gorge and mountain where live goats and sheep.
The beautiful stone walls outside, the traditional oven, the barbeque and the swimming pool offer to the visitor the change of a unique and peaceful stay in beautiful natural surroundings away from the bustle of tourism. Scents and colours of the thyme, the oregan, the jasmine and other kind of cretan plants and flowers give to the visitor unique moments. George Patsoumadakis purchased this villa in 2004
We really enjoyed our stay at Vafes. It is a beautiful quiet village and Irini villa was perfect for what we needed. The villa was beautifully restored with many original features. A small kitchen but with 3 tavernas in the village cooking was not essential. I especially recommend the first taverna as you leave Irini house, next to the gift shop on the left. I hope that we shall be returning next year. Liking cats is essential, there are two very friendly cats who will visit. We wanted to take them home with us!
I stayed at Irini House with my wife and 2 y old son.
First of all, it was a bit difficult to find this place at night. We arrived at 10:30 at night, and there is no sign of any sort indicating this was the place.
The owner told us that there will be a paper with my name on the gate and on a door to the unit. It could have been helpful if it was my name written on the piece of paper, but unfortunately he had it wrong... it was completely different name. Nonetheless, we managed to enter the unit after walking around the area looking for the gate. I opened the door and turned a light on, and my initial impression was "wow, very small".
Place was very unique and nicely restored, but the particular room we stayed at had very steep stairs leading up to a bed room and a ladder like stairs up to a mezzanine. The bed in the main bedroom was a bit small for two adults to sleep on, so my wife and son shared it, and I slept on a small sleeper / day bed like sofa up on the mezzanine. Place was relatively clean, but there are many pill bugs inside and the outside of unit. There is not much place to sit down and relax inside the unit, but you could sit around the pool.
Again, the place is nice, but a bit too small for a family. If you have a small child with you like we did, I would look for somewhere else.
A delightful conversion and restoration which contrasts with the many con"Crete" developments !
Set in the quiet village of Vafes in the foothills of the White Mountains but only a few minutes from the main "National Road", this property is one of four which have been sensitively restored , with a shared pool, and decked area. The property whilst retaining many original features such as wood-burner oven and fireplace has modern comforts of a en- suite deep tiled bath, another bath/ shower and air conditioning. a sitting arewa and the bedroom are reached by wooden steps, making it an interesting area inside and maximising the use of space. The building has thick walls and few windows so remained cool, despite the heat outside.
The basic kitchen facilities are adequate for simple food preparation.
The property is away from it all- you leave your car in the village street and access it down a small sightly stepped lane.
The village- although small has a couple of tavernas, a mini market and a craft/gift shop - close by.
The owner was very helpful- making the booking arrangements simple.
We were perfectly satisfied with the house, the area and the whole village. The house were nicely refurbished, modern equipped while keeping the traditional spirit by using interior, furniture and equipment matching to this historic buildings.
The access to the area was on one side through a nice iron gate and from the opposite side through a small archway that gave the whole property the appearance of a real manor.
The panoramic view over the valley and to the hills where stunning.
In the direct neighborhood was a small mini-market where we could by fresh bread, among others. The two taverns in the village were both very good serving real cretan food at good prices. In addition there were a shop called Lotus arts shop offering souvenir and genuine antiques. The owner showed us an old olive oil mill and told interesting facts about its use and history.
The people of the village as well as the stuff from the Irini Houses very nice, friendly and hospitable. The village itself was very beautiful, clean and we felt absolutely comfortable and more safe then at any other place on the world.
