Why The Owner chose Iowa

I believe in preservation. This building housed law practices for over 100 years. When the last lawyer left, the building sat vacant... Waiting for adaptive reuse. This apartment is the first of three levels to be renovated.

I wanted to give more stars but unfortunately cannot.

The property had a lot of character and charming decor. However, the blow up mattress kept deflating, there were numerous spider webs at both the front and back entrances - inside and out , the entrance steps were crumbly, the shower curtain kept falling down, we dealt with a large centipede crawling in a suitcase and a large spider in the shower. Also, if you need wifi, cell service, a blow dryer or tv this property is not for you!

Owner's Response: A simple phone call, day or night, would have had the mattress replaced in a jiffy. My contact information is prominently posted in the unit. The listing information is clear that there is no wifi. There is local TV (we are a small population center so choices are limited) and DVD. I have never had an issue with cell phone use anywhere in the building.

Great little place!

  • 4 of 5

We were happy with the location of this tastefully restored basement apartment! We spent the week in Nauvoo and were able to get there quickly and easily with the bridge being only one block away. Everything was clean and comfortable (loved the soft bed and the air mattress worked well for my daughters....towels were fabulous). The microwave wasn't working and we didn't have wifi, but because we spent most of our time sight seeing this wasn't a problem. Very nice place.

Great looking apartment!

  • 3 of 5

We love this apartment! It has been renovated so well and was the perfect place for us to stay on our trip to Nauvoo. Having said that I can only give it three stars because as a previous review stated the bed was awful. It was like a giant foam pad that held in heat and with my husband and I both in the bed we sunk to the middle and got stuck there. It was a challenge to get back out. (I have a broken sternum) and we woke up sweating from the heat the mattress held. there was also no wifi which I didn't even think of before reserving the place. Thankfully for us it wasn't a huge problem, we were not at the house a great deal and our devices all have data available. We also could not get the microwave to work to warm up our leftovers. I'm not sure why, we tried different power levels, etc and even after 6 minutes in the microwave with it running our food was as cold as it was out of the fridge but I was able to use the stove top to reheat our food so that wasn't a huge deal either. So, having said all of that the atmosphere was super cool and we loved it, we would definitely stay there again if the mattress were replaced. The other two issues were not a huge deal to us, I just mentioned them so that others wanting to rent this place will have the information.

Owner's Response: Sorry about the microwave. My phone number is prominently posted and a simple call would have taken care of the problem in a jiffy with a fix or substitute microwave.

More than I could hoped for

  • 5 of 5

Growing up in Keokuk, I couldn't have imagined that such an gem was hidden in what appeared to be an abandon building. Don't judge a book by its cover as they say. Cozy and stylish, I recommend this place to anyone wanting to stay in Keokuk.

Apartment rental

  • 4 of 5

My husband & I thought that the apartment was very neat. It is located in a brick building that is over 100 years old. Owner did a fantastic job rehabbing this area into a cute studio apartment. A great place to rent for just a couple of days.

Renters do need to be aware that there is not any cable TV service. A DVD player & movies are there to watch which was enough entertainment for us because we did not spend that much time during the day there and a brief period in the evening.

Overall it was clean but the floors could be have been swept & mopped a bit more thoroughly. One other item that could be improved upon is a MUCH firmer mattress and better pillows for the bed.

Great place to stay

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was as advertised - rustic with modern touches. For the price, you are not going to find a better place to stay in Keokuk. I would definitely book this location again.
