About The Owner

We opened Crooked Cabin Properties in 1991 with the original Crooked Cabin. In 1996, we purchased The Meadow Cottage which was a 1930's mother-in-law bungalow on a quiet, private 2 acre meadow in the heart of Abingdon. We restored the property to its original condition and added new amenities and lovely furnishings. We then went on to restore 2 other properties, The Brook House and The Creekside Hatch--both in the historic district. We love providing guests with the help they need plannig their trip and selecting events and activities o make their stay in Abingdon perfect!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1996

Why The Owner chose Blue Ridge Highlands

We chose to buy our properties in the historic District of Abingdon, Virginia because we know how important it is for guests to have the feel of being in the heart of town and having easy access to all the wonderful events and activities that Abingdon has to offer. After staying in cottages in the middle of Colonial Williamsburg and seeing how fun it was to actually be in the center of things...we decided that we would like visitors to experience the same fell in our town. You have the experience of being in SW Virginia's oldest town, yet have easy access to all that the area has to offer in outdoor recreational activities, festivals and arts and music. All of our properties are close to The Virginia Creeper Trail, Barter Theatre as well as great shopping areas, fine dining.

What makes this cottage unique

Guests have an easy walk to The World Famous Barter Theatre, Virginia Creeper Hike and Bike Trail, Wolf Hills Brewery as well as great shopping and dining! We are close to TVA lakes, Appalachian Trail, Bristol Race Track, and the Country Music Road. Heartwood Artisan Center and William King Regional Arts Center are only a short 10 minute drive.

Guests can enjoy the privacy of the cottage, yet are close to all events and activities. The outdoor dining/firepit area provides a great gathering place on cool evenings.

We provide our guests with complimentary passes to the Coomes Recreation Center, a state of the arts facility just minutes from your door...indoor/outdoor pools, tennis courts, exercise facilities, playground, walking trails and skateboard park. We also provide complimentary pastries, juices and coffees/teas on arrival mornings.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were looking for a few days away from kids, work and responsibilities and after looking at options settled on The Meadow Cottage. We wanted to be in town, but in a quiet spot. We hit the jackpot! The cottage is very charming and beautifully decorated....not over the top, but comfortable and very unique. Everything was provided to make us feel at home...fluffy towels, fresh ground coffee and my favorite teas! The owners left us surprise apple bread one morning and yummy cookies on our last day. We were able to walk everywhere because the weather was unusually warm for February. We discovered wonderful restaurants and quaint shops....a favorite was Katbird's for coffee and wine. We even fired up the firepit one night and enjoyed bundling up under the winter sky with a cup og Irish Coffee! We will go back...would live to see this beautiful spot when everything is in bloom!

The house is very close to town with a very large and private yard. It was perfect for a short vacation.

Relaxing, beautiful cottage with lovely garden

  • 5 of 5

My two daughters (11 and 13) stayed at Meadow Cottage for a week and had a wonderful time. The cottage is charming and so peaceful (I slept better than I have for years), and the garden/yard is beautiful. There are several areas to sit and read a book outside, have morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening - the porches on the front and back of the house as well as a fire pit and a table and chairs in the garden. Jim and Jennifer are the kindest people and we loved getting to know them - the pastries and coffee/tea/juices left for our arrival made us feel instantly welcome.

We stayed during the Abingdon Arts festival and spent a couple of days wandering around there, we also (upon Jennifer's suggestion) biked the 18 mile Virginia Creeper trail which was so much fun! It's the easiest bike ride we have ever been on - a shuttle drives you to the top of the mountain and the entire ride is downhill with multiple places to stop and climb rocks or put your feet in the water. We also kayaked which the girls loved and the biggest hit was seeing Mamma Mia at the Barter theater.

We plan on returning - Abingdon is a lovely little town and we will absolutely stay at one of Jennifer and Jim's properties again. They become like friends!

Relax and breathe

  • 5 of 5

After many years of talking about doing the Virginia Creeper Trail, we finally made it down from Norther VA. We wanted a cottage so that we could come and go as we pleased. What a great getaway and Jim and Jennifer were so welcoming and friendly. We usually do B&Bs...we for sure will be back to Meadow Cottage. It was pristine and so cheerful and the quiet we enjoyed was unbelievable...made coming back up to Beltway City even more sad. We arrived to find a loaf of Jennifer's apple bread, juice and 1/2 and 1/2 for our coffee in the AM and on the last evening, Jennifer dropped by with cookies.....loved this place!!

Owner's Response: We loved having you for a week and so glad you enjoyed your stay and your miles of biking! Abingdon and our area offers many opportunities to bike ..not just the Creeper Trail, but a new trail in Saltville as well as many scenic back road trips on country roads. Our firepit is always ready for a roaring fire, some star gazing and a glass of wine after a day of exploring. Next time you come, you can enjoy the addition of a hammock! Thanks for choosing The Meadow Cottage and look forward to you return!

We have found our spot!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely had a wonderful time in Abingdon where we stayed at the delightful Meafow Cottage for 4 nights. We took our daughter and her two children to ride The Creeper Trail and ended up requesting an extra night. There is so much to do and see..Barter Theatre, Heartwood Artisan Center, Artist Depot, Farmers Market...we walked our legs off...but the best part was returning to "our little cottage" to unwind and enjoy the quiet. The cottage is totally private....seems like a country setting in the middle of town. We had deer that visited each night and enjoyed watching the baby rabbits chase each other. The cottage is equipped with everything we needed, right down to board games and cards. The owners gave us a guest pass to the Coomes Center for swimming...but we did not have time to do anything but use the great playground. The owners also had plenty of juice, coffees and teas for us to enjoy and the best apple cinnamon bread. We couldn't have asked for a better spot for our family trip. When we asked the kids what they liked best, they were unanimous "pizza by the firepit"! Success!

Charming and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

What a treat to find such a quaint cottage to call our home base for a recent get-away extended weekend. We started each day with our coffee and pastries before exploring the local attractions. We would end each day relaxing in the cozy Living Room. Even though it was early February, and chilly, we were comfortable sitting in the sunshine on the front porch mid day as we planned our evening outings. The location feels private and secluded, but is so convenient to town. There is so much to do and see in this area, and excellent dining options. The owners provided special touches to make our stay pleasant, and were nearby if we needed anything, but respected our privacy so that we truly felt at home and relaxed.

Ray of Light

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were going through an adoption looking for something other then a hotel and close to the hospital having a baby in tow.

The experience staying at the cottage was a beam of light from heaven guiding us on this path. We both have nothing but excellent things to say. Bringing our new born back to the cottage was the perfect atmosphere. A full Kitchen to cook meals instead of dining out and a place to do the extra laundry. From the beginning, we felt right at home. Because of the adoption, we had to spend 2 weeks in VA. During the planning stage, we decided on the second week to move closer to PA. It was truly heartbreaking after our time was up that we had to leave, wishing we could've stayed the whole 2 weeks.

Crystal and I would like to sincerely thank the home owners Jennifer & Jim for the personal warmth we both felt, going above and beyond to help with our needs.

We plan to return in the future to show off our little girl and further enjoy all the quant charming aspects of the cottage.

Thank You so much!
