Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday home in Upper Manhattan - Harlem top-floor brownstone

semi-private with kitchenette, central to city, transportation, and parks.

Willkommen! Bienvenidos! Welcome. I speak english, hablo espanol, ich kann deutsch. You have your own floor (the fourth floor) of a historic Harlem brownstone with queen bed with memory foam, private bath and private roof terrace with bbq and city view. Please note that we are NOT renting a separate apartment; the entry to the upper floor is through our living area on the floor below. I have just added a kitchenette: you have your own small refrigerator, toaster oven, and electric kettle. Central, quiet, happening neighborhood. I am a psychologist and raised my teenage son here in Harlem. The room is light-filled and airy with two desks, armchair, everything you need for your new york city adventure. We have two cats but they can be kept out of your area, so this is only a problem if you have a severe allergy.

My downstairs neighbor, Carolyn, runs the business Welcome to Harlem, and we can give you discounts on jazz brunches, historic walking tours (of African-American and Jewish history of Harlem),, and more.

About The Owner

I have lived in Harlem for 17 years, and raised my son (now 15) here. While the neighborhood has been very gentrified recently (there are dozens of upscale restaurants, bars, cafes within minutes walk), it still has a historical Harlem feeling and is a great place to live. While I have worked for 20 years as a psychologist, I have always had a great interest in history, especially the history of different immigrant populations and their interaction with each other. I am also now a licensed tour guide and give tours of Jewish Harlem (100 years ago Harlem was the third largest Jewish community in the world!!!). If this is something that interests you, let me know and I will make sure you can join a group tour or I can give you a private one, at 50% discount.

What makes this house unique

We are within a ten minute walk of several great parks (central park, morningside park, and marcus garvey park. Very convenient to subways which will bring you downtown, to times square, in less than half an hour. Harlem is more historically preserved than much of Manhattan, and has less population density, so has a distinctively relaxed but lively feeling. The bedroom is back-facing so incredibly quiet for the city.

Authentic neighbourhood and house

  • 5 of 5

My mum and I stayed here beginning of September, the neighbourhood is amazing.Easy to walk to the metro and 20 minute walk to central park. Hannah is very friendly and accommodating, the view from the balcony is amazing. The kitties are friendly and a welcomed addition. As a side note, a whole foods is opening this fall which is going to be right around the corner! Everything you need for your stay in NYC, will definitely come back again.

The stay was great! Warm welcome, good advices, great location on a quiet typical browstone street in Harlem in between the main subways routes.

The guests floor is big , clean and cosy with the rooftop terrase that has an amazigh view over the skyline. Thanks again!

I simply felt welcome and at home!

  • 5 of 5

Your host

Hannah is just fantastic. Communication before arrival was always same day within hours. She really made me feel welcome when I arrived and that didn't change during my entire stay. She gives great advice on places to go if you don't know your way around and always cares about you feeling comfortable and at home.

Your room

It's a lofty gorgeous rooftop room with nice brick walls, your own bathroom with tub and an amazing rooftop terrace overlooking midtown Manhattan. You can see the Chrysler and the Empire State in the morning for coffee and in the evening the skyline is glowing while you have your glass of wine. Never had view like this in NY before! I might add that the mattress is really great, which is important for me!

Your neighborhood

I used to live in Manhattan in the late 80ies and at that time no one would go close to Harlem. In our days the neighborhood is quite gentrified. Even though it is still a mostly black community - which I like - I felt safe at all times, walking around, doing some food shopping or going to a bar. Even at night I felt safe taking public transportation up to 116St and walking home the rest of the way.

And the cats

Hannah has two simply fantastic cats. Upon arrival she asked me if I mind having the cats around but I didn't since I've got one at home myself. These two calico cats (tortoiseshell - cause they have three colors) are very friendly, nice and lovely cats that are around if you like them to but also mind their own business. Just like cats are. I absolutely loved having them around and miss them already.

In a nutshell: fantastic host, lovely place, great neighborhood and two simply amazing cats

Hannah: I will be back ;-) Thank you for a memorable stay in my favorite city in the world.

Convenient base with super roof garden

  • 5 of 5

Hannah is a most helpful host with plenty of ideas of what to do and where to go. The cats are pretty friendly too - always wanting to see what's going on upstairs!

Comfortable accommodation (with vast library) with roof garden - excellent place to chill out in the hot evenings.

Nearby metro lines and buses to downtown Manhattan - the bus (No. 2?) is more convenient than metro for the Met museum.

Plenty of parks nearby including Central Park and a lovely park near the Cloisters museum.

We enjoyed our stay - but not suitable if you don't like cats or cannot climb 4 flights of stairs.

great sightseen

  • 4 of 5

the room is plenty of light, has a very comfortable bed, a lovely terrace with a great views of the skyscrapers of Manhattan Hannah is a very nice and helpful woman.

The only problem is that the room is full of books and other belongings of the owner that leave little room for the guests' luggage
