Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

The Hideaway is a fabulous Mendocino Coast Vacation rental. You can feel the rest of the world almost slip away as you enter this enchanted place. Here you will find our house and property situated on the ridge above the ocean. In this very private location you feel as if time has paused in a different era, one where life is simple, where kids run free to explore the forest without worry, where there is no traffic, no noise, you feel transformed.

Our house just outside of Gualala (pronounced wa-la-la) is located about 30 miles south of Mendocino, and about six miles north of the famous Sea Ranch, a coastal development renowned for its architectural respect for the environment. Which means you have easy access to the arts, entertainment and shopping to be found in Gualala. The presence of Sea Ranch and many vacation homes allow wonderful shopping and arts to thrive in this small community. Nearby there are wineries, galleries, restaurants, wonderful beaches, kayaking, hiking, lighthouses, (See our What To Do section). Though even with all this to do, we often find it hard to tear ourselves away from our hideaway on the hill.

Our home is surrounded by gardens and redwood trees. We are close enough to the ocean to hear the sea lions barking in the distance. The kitchen is spacious with a large table for the whole family to enjoy meals together and in the winter warmed by a woodstove. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots/dishes/utensils/dishwasher, just bring your food!

The open floor plan includes the kitchen, living room and sun room. Beautifully decorated, the living room features a hide-a-bed couch, flagstone fireplace and TV, with satellite, TV, DVD, VCR and Bose. Directly connected is the large sunroom, with an open ceiling and panoramic windows to the gardens and horizon view. This bright room is an irresistible space to spend the morning with a cup of coffee or tea, wondering how this place makes time stand still.

The master bedroom is also bright with a wonderful king sized bed. A large sliding door opens on to a private deck that leads to the hot tub. The second bedroom is large with two double beds. The bathroom has a beautiful flagstone floor, shower and deep Japanese soaking tub with view out to the gardens. The best part of the bathroom however is the door that leads directly to the back deck and the outdoor shower, where you can look up at the redwoods while you shower.

The house is 1400 square feet, and sleeps 6 (8 with the hide-a-bed). We are the last house on a gravel road that leads up the Hill and are situated on about 3 acres which includes beautiful perennial gardens, redwood forest and a large sunny yard. We are bordered by several large 100+ acre parcels of forest. The location, about a mile up a gravel road from the coast/beach, means that we often sit above the morning coastal fog, enjoying sunshine while the coast is still shrouded.

A few minutes drive from the bottom of our road lies Cook’s Beach. We call it private beach but a few years ago the California Coastal Commission built a beautiful path and steps and we learned it had an official name. Now the access is easy to this beautiful cove with about 150 yards of sandy beach. North up the road a mile lies the beach at Fish Rock, a larger nice sandy beach. Here the Anchor Bay campground also provides a place to launch small boats for fisherman and abalone divers.

About Owner/Manager

We are a family of 5 that loves to ski, bike , hike and run. We love art and nature and forests and gardens.

Owner/Manager purchased this house in 2002

Why Owner/Manager chose North Coast California

This part of the coast is spectacular, with just the right mix of culture vs solitude for us. They call this the Banana belt because of the warm temperatures often felt here. Often warmer and sunnier than the bay area. By sitting at the top of the Hill we avoid most coastal fog and enjoy warm temps.

What makes this house unique

The property is unique because of its solitude at the end of the road, the space to play explore and hike, the beautiful redwoods and the horizon view.

Great escape

  • 5 of 5

We had 2 couples stay at the house for the weekend and it was a great little escape from the summer heat. The house is up about a mile on a dirt road (follow their directions and note at 0.5 miles keep RIGHT at the 3 way junction you come to) and feels very private and secluded. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen was well equipped. Not very far away in Gualala there's a great state park with an amazing beach that is enormous where you can sit and picnic or walk around, they charge a small fee but it's worth it.

The owners are great communicators and responded to my emails in a timely fashion. As others have said there isn't great cell service and the wifi is limited, but you are still able to be reached between your cell on wifi or having someone call you on their land line. Don't expect to stream any movies or shows though, but who needs to anyway with that great hot tub sitting there waiting to be soaked in. There are also a number or games to play, so unplug and unwind!

All in all a great trip and a great house, we will definitely rent here again!

Beautiful and bucolic paradise

  • 5 of 5

Dear visitors,

We stayed here for the first leg of our honeymoon. It was exactly what we hoped for, a wonderful retreat from all the stress of preparing for the wedding and the go-go-go of daily life. The gardens are simply lovely and invite one to sit and be at peace. We thoroughly enjoyed the sunroom, with it's dappled mid-day and afternoon light, the hot tub at night with the stars up above, and the well appointed kitchen (utensils, dishware, seasonings), which had everything we needed to cook family-style meals so we could save on going out. Whoever owns and manages this home knows how to make you feel at home away from home - we would love to stay here again!

Beautiful, quiet, comfortable stay in the forest

  • 4 of 5

Absolutely loved this house and property! The gardens are amazing - easy to just enjoy the greenery. Tons of trees. You can just barely see the ocean, which is about a mile away. Plenty of space to walk or find a place to sit outside. House itself was very comfortable - it has everything you'd ever need but is also uncluttered. Beds were very comfortable but just note the master bed is very low to the ground. Loved the hot tub, and easy access via the deck to the master. The bathroom was a little odd, in that there are no window coverings and lots of window space - while it was awesome to wake up to a mama and baby deer right outside the window, it was not awesome to have family members walking around and be able to see in! :) We just needed to let them know where not to walk. It is a little bit hard to find but as long as you follow the directions, you'll find it. No cell service, extremely limited wifi, no satellite or other TV service - bring DVDs if you want to watch something. Lots of games and puzzles. Fantastic place, would definitely stay again.

A really beautiful, secluded place.

  • 4 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a lovely time up at The Hideaway. We enjoyed the seclusion, beauty of the gardens, access to Gualala, and the Beautiful house itself. It was clean, and well-stocked except for soap in the bathroom. The host was responsive and friendly in her messages. The only thing we were not satisfied with about our trip was that although Wi-Fi was advertised, it was not in working order when we got there, and the password was not easily accessible had it been working. Most people who stay here won't mind having no Wi-Fi or cell service anyway though so it's not a big loss. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others.
