Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

The Hideaway is a fabulous Mendocino Coast Vacation rental. You can feel the rest of the world almost slip away as you enter this enchanted place. Here you will find our house and property situated on the ridge above the ocean. In this very private location you feel as if time has paused in a different era, one where life is simple, where kids run free to explore the forest without worry, where there is no traffic, no noise, you feel transformed.

Our house just outside of Gualala (pronounced wa-la-la) is located about 30 miles south of Mendocino, and about six miles north of the famous Sea Ranch, a coastal development renowned for its architectural respect for the environment. Which means you have easy access to the arts, entertainment and shopping to be found in Gualala. The presence of Sea Ranch and many vacation homes allow wonderful shopping and arts to thrive in this small community. Nearby there are wineries, galleries, restaurants, wonderful beaches, kayaking, hiking, lighthouses, (See our What To Do section). Though even with all this to do, we often find it hard to tear ourselves away from our hideaway on the hill.

Our home is surrounded by gardens and redwood trees. We are close enough to the ocean to hear the sea lions barking in the distance. The kitchen is spacious with a large table for the whole family to enjoy meals together and in the winter warmed by a woodstove. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots/dishes/utensils/dishwasher, just bring your food!

The open floor plan includes the kitchen, living room and sun room. Beautifully decorated, the living room features a hide-a-bed couch, flagstone fireplace and TV, with satellite, TV, DVD, VCR and Bose. Directly connected is the large sunroom, with an open ceiling and panoramic windows to the gardens and horizon view. This bright room is an irresistible space to spend the morning with a cup of coffee or tea, wondering how this place makes time stand still.

The master bedroom is also bright with a wonderful king sized bed. A large sliding door opens on to a private deck that leads to the hot tub. The second bedroom is large with two double beds. The bathroom has a beautiful flagstone floor, shower and deep Japanese soaking tub with view out to the gardens. The best part of the bathroom however is the door that leads directly to the back deck and the outdoor shower, where you can look up at the redwoods while you shower.

The house is 1400 square feet, and sleeps 6 (8 with the hide-a-bed). We are the last house on a gravel road that leads up the Hill and are situated on about 3 acres which includes beautiful perennial gardens, redwood forest and a large sunny yard. We are bordered by several large 100+ acre parcels of forest. The location, about a mile up a gravel road from the coast/beach, means that we often sit above the morning coastal fog, enjoying sunshine while the coast is still shrouded.

A few minutes drive from the bottom of our road lies Cook’s Beach. We call it private beach but a few years ago the California Coastal Commission built a beautiful path and steps and we learned it had an official name. Now the access is easy to this beautiful cove with about 150 yards of sandy beach. North up the road a mile lies the beach at Fish Rock, a larger nice sandy beach. Here the Anchor Bay campground also provides a place to launch small boats for fisherman and abalone divers.

About Owner/Manager

We are a family of 5 that loves to ski, bike , hike and run. We love art and nature and forests and gardens.

Owner/Manager purchased this house in 2002

Why Owner/Manager chose North Coast California

This part of the coast is spectacular, with just the right mix of culture vs solitude for us. They call this the Banana belt because of the warm temperatures often felt here. Often warmer and sunnier than the bay area. By sitting at the top of the Hill we avoid most coastal fog and enjoy warm temps.

What makes this house unique

The property is unique because of its solitude at the end of the road, the space to play explore and hike, the beautiful redwoods and the horizon view.

A little piece of magic

  • 5 of 5

A lovely, well-appointed home. A beautiful, secluded property in a meadow clearing in the redwoods. Deer, birds, butterflies, lovely garden, cozy stone fireplace for the chilly nights and best of all, a hot tub under the stars. I hesitate raving because I fear we won't be able to find dates to book again -- because we're definitely coming back!

Beautiful home compfortable and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful stay at the hideaway. This home is full of character and had everything we needed for a nice relaxing stay. The hot tub was so great in the cool morning fog and the sun room was my favorite.

The house was clean and very nice but there was no toilet paper and the TV did not work.

  • 2 of 5

Christine said she would bring toilet paper but never did. We paid a lot to stay there and toilet paper is important!! On the lighter side we like the house and it was clean.

Quitetude, serenity and natural bliss.

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed staying in this beautiful environment. Having total privacy in a natural environment has been a pristine experience. The house is clean, very comfortable and during the cooler nights the hot tub is a true delight. Everywhere you look is nature. The air is crisp and clean.

We enjoyed having our coffee sitting outside on the terrace in the morning sun. The only thing we missed was an umbrella or sunshade to put up when the sun gets too intense.

Everything else is just perfect.

Extremely private, quiet and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful place for my family ranging from age 10 to 60. Lot's of green space to investigate, nice road for walking and great night sky for star gazing. Close to the beaches and Qualala. A little tricky to find as your google map leads you to the main road and not any further down the gravel road as it begins to "t" off, but simply go in the direction of the address sign, it will lead you past other houses first and then the wonderful Hideaway will appear.
