About Tom Barry

Deb Preusch is the outreach and internship coordinator at the Aldo Leopold Charter School, which is dedicated to experiential learning and named after the visionary conservationist who promoted the creation of wilderness areas, including the Gila Wilderness -- which lies in our backyard. Tom Barry is a writer and policy analyst associated with the Center for International Policy, specializing in U.S.-Mexico issues. Common interests include backpacking, traveling in Latin America, hiking, biking, and camping -- and good books and movies!

Tom Barry purchased this cottage in 1996

Why Tom Barry chose New Mexico

We came to Pinos Altos in 1996 because we didn't want to raise our children or spend the rest of our lives in a big city (Albuquerque) -- and because we have always lover this part of New Mexico for its climate, Gila National Forest, and the vibrant small town of Silver City. Our property, which we bought with friends, is on the edge of Pinos Altos (about 250 people, 7 miles from Silver City, and 1,000 ft. higher). We built a beautiful straw-bale and adobe passive-solar home with a view of the Pinos Altos range. We can bike, hike, and occasionally cross-country sky directly from our home, as you can from our cottage.

What makes this cottage unique

* Tranquility, quiet, views of mountains.

* Easy access to the services of an urban area, with good restaurants, university, music, etc.

* Array of Biking, hiking out your door.

* Base to visit Gila Cliff Dwellings, City of Rocks, Gila Wilderness, Gila River, and Lake Roberts.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our time at the casita was memorable and more joyful than anticipated. This little cottage is immaculate. All new interior surfaces and passive solar controlled heat makes the comfort level perfect.

This little cottage in nestled into a pinion and juniper natural area with nature trails a few steps away. The best restaurant in town in minutes away on foot. Historic sites are within view. The night sky is bright with the constellations and I am glad I brought my binoculars for the stars and spectacular wildlife (we a faun at dusk). I wish we could have stayed longer.

Perfect alternative to staying in Silver City.

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not do justice to this beautifully appointed casita. Stocked with everything from toothpaste to fresh eggs, we found nothing missing during our 4 day stay. The weather was quite cold but cozy inside with the help of space heaters. Silver City is 10 minutes away and the spectacular scenery of the Gila area branches out in every direction. Even our dog enjoyed his stay! Thanks to Deb and Tom for being such thoughtful hosts.

Very Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a great place to get away from it all, look no further! This casita is up in the Pinos Altos mountains -- gorgeous surroundings and a fantastic trail to explore the forest. The casita has a full kitchen, and the owners are kind enough to stock it with all the kitchen supplies you will need (pots, pans, utensils, plates, even butter, spices, eggs, oatmeal, etc!) Theres a full sized washer and dryer, which is very convenient. Not only is there a full sized bed (very comfy and great pillows) and a loft with another bed, but the couch is a pull out! Wifi is available; they recycle and have a compost bin! It was also wonderful to have so much natural light during the day. I stayed in mid-Jan and it was comfortable warm in the casita. There are birds outside the windows every morning -- even in the snow! I went here for a personal silent retreat and the owners were very respectful of me choosing not to speak, and completely granted me privacy, with the offer of just being a phone call or knock-on-the door away! Also, if you wake up around 4:00 am, you might here the pack of coyotes that live in the woods; and you can see all sorts of tracks in the forest from other animals, including bears and deer! Such a fantastic stay, and I will definitely be going back.

Cozy and welcoming

  • 5 of 5

The casita was very comfortable, well-stocked, and super clean. Easy drive to and from Silver City, yet all the quiet and nature you'd expect with a place in the woods! Nicely decorated with a comfy bed and lots of natural light. Tom and Deb were great hosts - always nearby but not intrusive. Really enjoyed my stay at the Pinos Altos Casita and would definitely stay here again!

Peaceful and magical

  • 5 of 5

I had a magical stay at this beautiful cabin for a weekend. The nearby hiking was breathtaking and the birds and other animals I could watch from my porch were thrilling. The cabin had everything I needed, clean, bright, comfortable and the hosts were responsive and kind. I will definitely be back!

Great Visit to Gila Wilderness

  • 5 of 5

This lovely casita is the perfect place to stay while exploring the Gila Wilderness Area. It is quiet, peaceful, and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is well-equipped and has lots of "extras" that are commonly missing from rental homes such as flour, sugar, and a variety of oils. There were even brown eggs and butter in the refrigerator. The bed is very comfortable and sheets and towels are high quality. The washer & dryer were easy to use. The passive solar heat/cooling worked well and the casita was always comfortable. There is an exceptional small selection of movies to watch. Highly recommended.

Excellent getaway

My husband and I enjoyed our weekend stay at the Casita. Our hosts were great and the casita was comfortable and inviting. We also enjoyed visiting nearby Silver City and just hanging out at the casita. We would stay there again.

Hikes Close to Pinos Altos:

Cross Mountain Road

From Rock Street go north on Highway 15 for ½ mile. Cross Mountain Road is on the right across from Bear Creek Cabins and just past Boulder Trail Road. Park near the turn-off unless you have a high-clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicle in which case you could try to follow the road -- not recommended. Walking, you follow the jeep road toward Cross Mountain, and ascend to the peak on a single track trail whose trailhead is marked by a cross. Great views of Pinos Altos and the mining district. Roughly a 4-mile walk.

Continental Divide Trail

You can access the Continental Divide Trail from near Pinos Altos.

1. 1.6 miles north on Highway 15 CDT crosses the road. Park on the pullout on the left, and catch the trail heading west.

2. 1.3 miles north on Highway 15 is the Arrastra Site. The CDT goes south and then ascends west, climbing to the ridge.

3. You could also connect to the CDT by walking up Cross Mountain Road, and then ascend to the left on steep gravel road that takes you to the ridge trail that meets up with the CDT as it heads to Twin Sisters Peaks.

Cherry Creek Road

Turn right on Highway 15 and continue 2.7 miles. Crossing a creek, there is a sign for the Cherry Creek Ranch. Pull in and park your vehicle. This is a lovely road by a creek and often boxed in by canyon walls that leads to a privately owned section and to a trail (about 1 ¾ miles in) that ascends to the Pinos Altos Range. Roughly 4 miles in and out.

Ben Lilly Pond

At 2.9 miles north on #15, you can park your car at the intersection with a jeep road that descend for about a mile to Ben Lilly Pond. You can keep walking along the creek for a few miles. Lovely cliffs and creek crossings.

Ben Lilly Memorial Overlook

At 3.3 miles there is a sharp turn to the right and a parking lot at the turn. Park here for a short walk to Ben Lilly Overlook. Great vistas and boulders.

Moon Rocks

At 3.6 miles you can pull off the road at an orange reflector on your left for a walk on what locals call the moon rocks. Great place to watch the sunset with a bottle of wine and some cheese and bread. There is also a larger pullout a bit further up on the right.

Cycling and Running

If you are a runner, road cyclists, or mountain biker, you can talk to Tom about the best places to bike and ride.
