Rudy and Antje Bakalov purchased this villa in 2014
We picked this particular home because of its character and the opportunities for friends and families to stay and hang out together. We deliberately choose to be away from the beach as the Roatan beaches are public and would not allow to offer you much of privacy. As the house sits on 1.5 acres, there will be nobody peeking in your windows or walking across the property. No nightclub noises or bar crowds. Just you and your family, minutes away from everything you need. We hope you will share the same views and have an unforgettable time at Chillax Roatan.
My family stayed at Chillax a little while ago and LOVED it. The house is very spacious, bright and clean. It is about 5 min away from the beach on a little hill which offers you a nice breeze, a beautiful view on the ocean and the surrounding yard with its plentiful fruit trees and other tropical plants. It was a treat to be allowed to pick fruit or have the gardener pick and prepare us a coconut. We stayed at the beach before which was nice but some of the local bars played loud music till 2am, which didn't allow for the best sleep. Chillax has AC, which was a nice change to the place we stayed in before. Thus we got a good sleep (also thanks to the beautiful and soft bed sheets) as we could keep the windows and doors closed at night without suffocating from heat and stickiness and didn't get woken up by the birds at 4:00. Also, there you don't have to deal with sand flies which at the beach can be a nuisance at times.
My kids loved the pool. It is nice and big and has a waterfall. I couldn't get my kids out of there. As for a concerned mother, I liked the fact that the owners use special health-friendlier cleaning chemicals for the pool instead of huge amounts of chlorine.
In general the entire experience was very good. We were contacted by the owners shortly after we sent an inquiry and got all our questions answered. The local management arranged for free transportation from and to the airport and helped us settle into our accommodation. We appreciated that they stocked the fridge with water, fruit and breakfast basics so we didn't have to rush out and search for food upon arrival but could have a light meal and chill out in and by the pool before exploring the area.
We had a great time from start to finish. We would definitely recommend Chillax and stay in this lovely home again, hopefully soon.

Chillax is a fantastic rental property. The entire rental experience was positive. The owners and property managers are engaged and eager to work with you. They answered every question we had. They made us feel comfortable and welcomed.
In short, if you want a family style home that's less than a 10 minute drive from West End with a pool and a view, this is your place. We didn't need to rent a car, as the taxis were easy enough. Though we will rent a car for a day on next visit to get to the east side of the island on our own.
Chillax is everything that you dream will it be, and it was the pillar of what my family of 5 calls one of favorite vacations of all time. The pictures are very accurate and the property is absolutely lovely. We arrived in Roatan on a direct flight from Atlanta, and the driver that the house managers (Ton & Zilla) arranged for us met us curbside at the airport. 15 minutes later we were pulling into the gated driveway and met by Ton & Zilla who gave us a thorough orientation of the home and property.
We went into West End for dinner the first night and enjoyed a wonderful meal at "The Landing" (wonderful ceviche) overlooking Half Moon Bay and beautiful sunset. We thought about a renting a car for our stay but quickly found that it was much easier / faster / less-expensive to use the taxi system. We rarely waited more than 90 seconds at the base of the driveway to get a cab (called "colectivos"), and it was an easy ride into West End for $1.50 USD (30 Lempira) / person. We stopped in the PetroSUN gas station just before town and used their ATM machine which we found to be the easiest and most secure machine in town.
Chillax has a generously-sized and equipped kitchen which made it quite simple to prepare 1-2 meals / day. Some rentals we've stayed in have been sparsely outfitted, but the owners and managers of Chillax go out of their way to make sure everything is easy - the kitchen had plenty of supplies (spices, oils, salt, pepper, butter) and even a few bottles of nice wine from the owners. The owners and local manages are exceptionally good with communications which made our stay easy and hassle-free. Can't wait to go back!
A few of our favorite memories:
- Diving with Erica and Coco at West End Divers -- Sea Turtles, Spotted Eels, Moray Eels, Rays
- Al fresco meals poolside at Chillax - watching fireworks from the locals on Christmas Eve (neighbor across the street "Ben" is a great guy and very helpful)
- Eating a fresh coconut from the trees on the property - my daughter and I made Pineapple / Coconut smoothies
- Eating a "Baleada" for breakfast at Calelu's Grocery - avocado, chorizo, egg, beans and the best tortilla you've ever eaten
- Swinging from the ropes of the "public" sailboat in Half Moon Bay - Great fun to swim to the boat and swing on the ropes with the locals
- Healthy lunch at LaLa's in West End - Excellent ceviche!
- Morning and evening walks on Sandy Bay Beach - very close to the house.
The first impressions and exhilarations gave way to disappointment when there was no hot water for 2 small children and my pregnant daughter to shower. The Manager was prompt to access the problem and attempted to resolve the issue himself. To no avail. Repairmen arrived and determined the water heat had failed. Day two came and went. Day three the new water heater was installed and the promise of a hot shower awaited our return from dinner that night. Alas, no hot water. The manager came and shared he had not adjusted the temperature to the very hot setting and he would make that adjustment. He tested the water in the kitchen sink to confirm our findings. The hot water never was resolved during our stay and manager Ton seemed to think we were just finicky guest and never returned. Even telling us we were free to leave if we were not having a good vacation, a suggestion we were in no position to accept on day 5 of our stay. The pool house bathroom flooded on the 1st day of our stay and was not repaired. The children had to run through the house wet from the pool to use the potty. The lack of a washer and dryer hampered the towels getting dry at the end of the day or to do any laundry.
The grounds are lovely, the setting atop a hill with views to the west end is breathtaking. The private pool was the main deciding factor for our family. The room set up is very functional. The second story master bedroom large and spacious. The street noise starts early and most noticeable from the master suite. If you are a early riser it will not bother. The dive shops and food service are really not in walking distance for the average person. We rented a car and this afforded us the run of the island. The major shopping market is a 10 minute drive back toward Coxin. The Thai, Tranquil sea, Lighthouse restaurants our favorite dining. The rotisserie chicken shack worth visiting.
Rudy the owner was engaging and vowed to fix the problems listed here. I believe he was most perplexed and offered remedies to our group.
Easily accessible from the airport. It takes approximately 25 minutes to get to the house. The neighborhood and vicinity of the house is well known in town. The property is willing to arrange transportation for guests. In terms of getting to the main area of the island, taxis pass by the house every few minutes.
The house is on top of a hill with a private road. From security perspective, the house has an iron gate and fence. Additionally, it has an alarm system connected to a private security company. The property is well maintained and offers a natural and clean environment.
From a comfort perspective, the layout of the house is excellent; with the luxurious master bedroom upstairs with balcony offering amazing views and air-conditioning system, the two additional bedrooms on the first floor have adequate space, private bathrooms and air-conditioning system. The property has a small pool that can be used for relaxing or hanging out before going out to check the many other attractions in the area.
The house has satellite TV and Wi-Fi for those who needing to keep tabs on work or family.
Most importantly, the house has no neighbors who can complain. Overall had an amazing experience and I would stay at the house again next time I am in the area.
We had great time at Chillax and one of most memorable vacations in Roatan. This is very charming villa. Built in Caribbean style, the house has a character. It has covered patio facing a pool. On rainy days or lazy afternoons we sat there drinking cocktails and enjoying the surroundings. The pool was a favorite place for the kids who spent a lot of time playing there and chilling on hot days. There is nice waterfall feature. The wooden deck and benches around the pool are surrounded by exotic plants and blooming flowers, which along with surrounding palm trees give this unforgettable tropical feeling. There is also hammock by the pool (under the canopy of the pool house) - my daughter’s favorite place. We asked the gardener on the property to cut us a coconut (for drinking use the green ones) and we made some great pictures drinking coconut water from a coconut on the hammock.
Hummingbirds, local woodpeckers, lizards and geckos add to exotic surroundings. A local lizzard - Monkey Lala - runs on two feet and looks like a miniature dinosaur taken from Jurassic park.
When we came the house was clean and stocked with 2 5-gallon jugs of water. There were also beach and bath towels at our disposal. Soap, shampoo and conditioner were provided too although we used our own. Ton and ZIlla, the property managers, were attentive to our needs so if you need anything just give them a call. The kitchen has all the necessities and is equipped with stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffee machine, toaster and blender.
One thing that came very convenient is WiFi available everywhere in the house and in the yard. My daughter even watched Netflix on her iPhone. There is TV which ironically we never used.
There are two bedrooms on the first floor and large master bedroom on the second floor. I strongly recommend taking the master bedroom if you can. It is much larger and features wooden cathedral ceiling with little tower on the roof and nice bathroom with two showerheads. The balcony on the second floor has also great view to the ocean.
The bathrooms on the first floor were little outdated but we found more convenient to use the bath in the pool house coming out of the pool or coming back from the beach.
The bedrooms have ACs. While on breezy days staying outside was pleasant, there were hot and humid days where we found refuge in the coolness of the bedroom. Our nights were much more comfortable too.
Overall, we had great unfroget
I will begin by saying that I do vacation rentals for a living and one of the things I really focus on is quality control in the units. Thus, I might be a bit more critical than many, but I am very focused on guest experiences and avoiding their need to complain.
We had a lovely stay. It is a great house and the breeze up there on the hill is really nice. The house is well located and the view of the sunset from the master deck was wonderful. And the landscaping is gorgeous. We were a little surprised at the noise from the traffic when we first arrived, but we got over it pretty quickly. (We live in a pretty small mountain town so we are not used to the sound of traffic.)
Our friend we were traveling with arrived the night before us. When he spoke to Ton he was told that there were no nice beaches close by. Umm... sorry, but we fell absolutely in love with Sandy Bay. Yes, you have sea weed, but the beach is gorgeous and quiet and the snorkeling is great there. And swimming off the docks is wonderful. Not sure what the problem is. Of course we spent lots of time at West End and elsewhere, but Sandy Bay is at least worth a mention.
I do also want to thank you very much for letting Ton get us a blender. The smoothies and cocktails were delicious!
Like I said, our overall stay was really nice. We hope to rent from you again in the future!
Roatan - one of the last pieces of paradise on earth
Endless summer, beautiful beaches, friendly people, good inexpensive food, fabulous snorkeling, world-class diving , great fishing and other water-related activities are just a few things that come to mind when thinking about the beautiful Honduran island Roatan.
Unlike most other popular Caribbean tourist destinations, Roatan does not have any sky-rise hotels, pushy street vendors and obnoxious time share sales people. Instead, the island offers accommodations of various sizes that are hidden away between tropical fruit trees and Hibiscus bushes, small, cute, privately owned stores, restaurants and bars, and the opportunity to truly relax or be as active as you want to be.
Though Roatan belongs to Honduras, it is not any less safe than most American or European towns. There is plenty of police on the island assuring the safety of the visitors.
Roatan offers fun and excitement for the entire family. If cause the biggest appeal is the beautiful reef that is easily accessible by water taxi where you can snorkel or dive. Other activities include: dolphin swimming, fishing, parasailing, paddle boarding, kayaking. West End beach offers an inflatable water park (free of charge).
Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy island tours, botanical gardens and arboretum tours that not only teach you about various plants but also offer fruit tours where you can sample a number of delicacies that grow on the island while enjoying spectacular views of the island.
Roatan further offers a butterfly garden and an underwater museum.
