2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 1-4
I built the cottage in 2011 because there was a lovely underused spot on the property with spectacular views. I started in April of 2011 and finished the same summer. It is a lovely location with with old-growth hardwood forests behind, and an awesome unobstructed view of the ocean. There is all the privacy one could want.
Why Stewart chose Chimney Corner
Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and the scenery on this stretch of coast is particularly striking; it can also be dramatic, with 130 kph winds at many points of the year. One must keep a clean yard in such conditions! There is such a rich culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. We see some of the most dramatic sunsets anywhere, watch whales play in our front yard, and fishermen haul their lobster traps every year. Moose, eagles, deer and foxes are regulars. It's easy to meet people, and the daily rhythm here is slower than in most cities; we visit neighbors and friends whenever we can, as we are busy in the summer months. It's also nice to be in a place where you don't need air-conditioning; Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are breezes to keep any bugs at bay.
What makes this Cottage unique
Chimney Corner beach– in addition to the fine beach and swimming, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coastline particularly striking. There is no shortage of things to do in the area. There's a lovely new restaurant opening this summer just a half-mile north of this cottage. In addition to Chimney Corner beach, there are other great beaches to check out nearby: Whale Cove (5 minutes away) at which you can explore a fabulous bluff by the sea, with great views north and south, Margaree Harbour (7 minutes away), with its beach and two lighthouses, the Broad Cove area, which offers a spectacular scenic drive, a great beach and a buffalo ranch. Cheticamp, about 20 minutes away, offers glimpses into Acadian culture. Only minutes from Cheticamp is Cape Breton Highlands National Park, with trails, lookoffs and waterfalls. There are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, and the town of Inverness, which offers music, pubs and food; the new Cabot Links golf course by the sea (#43 in the world), which is only 20 minutes away and offers a unique golfing experience in Inverness. Cabot Cliffs, (even more spectacular- ranked #9 in the world by Golf Digest!) was developed by Ben Cowan-Dewar and Mike Keiser (who developed Bandon Dunes in Oregon). The acclaim so far is pretty much unanimous-from the New York Times to Golf Digest. A third par-3 courser is in the works. There are also renowned crafters in the area; interesting pottery, quilting, rug hooking, and folk art can all be found locally.

Awesome all around
This place is located on the side of a mountain, well maybe not a mountain but I am from Florida, so mountain. It has a beautiful view of the ocean with wonderful sunsets. Our host, Steward, couldn't have been more helpful. He spent 2-hours with us to discuss areas we should visit and avoid. I would suggest you have questions ready. He checked with us throughout the week to make sure everything was going well and that we enjoyed our stay. The place is super clean, quiet, and comfortable. Only downside would be the bed is more like sleeping on a futon but overall comfortable.
It was a long trip from Florida but was so nice to get away and this place just made relaxing so much better.
Thanks for your feedback Robert; we always appreciate our guests’ comments about our cottages. No one has ever mentioned to me directly (or in a review) that they had some issue with the beds. You say that the bed is comfortable, but like a futon. It actually is a mattress, not a futon.
In previous reviews of the Cape cottage below, people have noted explicitly the comfort of the bed; Michael S. says below in 2018 “This was our second time staying at Cape Cottage and we loved it even more on our second visit…The cottage was very clean and had comfortable furnishings and bed.”
Myles K. in July 2017 says “The beds were comfortable, the bathroom new, and the sea breezes kept us cool making it easy to sleep after hot days.”
Regardless (because I’d like to err on the side of having the beds be too comfortable), I will replace the master bedroom’s mattress for the 2020 season.
Spectacular view cozy cottage
Let me start by saying that immediately following a facebook post highlighting our week-long stay in Chimney Corner, I had dozens of friends ask for the link to stay at Cape Cottage. The pictures don't lie. If you've never been to Cape Breton Island, put it on your bucket list, While the entire west coast of the island is absolutely stunning and definitely worth exploring, Chimney Corner's beach, just a 2 min. drive away from Cape Cottage, wins the prize. Literally, the warmest and clearest waters north of the Carolina's with powdery sand. Who knew? Don't waste your time searching for other properties. This is the one.
Steward as an host is like his property : amazing!
First, Steward's indications to find the place where accurate and very helpfull. Then he took the time to come see us in the morning after our late arrival to share his good tips and advices to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. We love the house and the view. We hope to visit again.
It was our first trip to Cape Breton and we had a wonderful time . The cabin was as lovely as the pictures and the view was simply amazing . Our host Stewart was wonderful To work with and went above and beyond to explain the area and things to do . That was especially helpful to us with it being our first time visiting . The beaches were sandy and ocean was beautiful, clean , shallow and warm much like the Caribbean !
Being from Alberta we do boast the mountains although our ride along Cabot Trail and through the National Park was amazing . We enjoyed many of the beaches and scenery in the area, there is a wonderful beach just 4 minutes from the cabin . We enjoyed our days touring around the little towns and beaches and equally enjoyed our time in the cabin. It had all the amenities for cooking and the atmosphere was beautiful The restaurants were very good, seafood and chowder galore can’t go wrong , also had some delicious Alberta Beef!! Be sure to experience the Dancing Goat restaurant , best blueberry pancakes I’ve had to date !
You can’t go wrong visiting Chimney Corner , there is lots to do and the people are certainly warm and friendly!! Thx Stewart , Hugh and I really enjoyed our week and will be sure to come back !!! Cheri & Hugh
Cottage with more than a view
If you want to visit the western coast of Cape Breton, this Cottage is the perfect place to stay. It is centrally located, peacefull and overlooking the ocean. The full-equipped kitchen made it easy to prepare meals. The owner was better than a tour guide! His generous advice allowed us to discover gems that we would have overlooked otherwise. Many thanks Stewart.
Cape Breton has been acknowledged as one of the great islands in the world to visit; there's all sorts of oceanfront-related activities: fishing wharves, lots of beaches close by, whale watching, and swimming. There’s also salmon and trout fishing on the world-renowned Margaree River, just minutes away. World-class golf at the renowned Cabot Links is a short-drive. This location will be a great base for other trips on the Island, and for checking out local music, entertainment, museums, craft galleries, and good eating. October features the Celtic Colours Music Festival. In our area, you'll also find excellent hiking networks, and access to the National Park, one of the wonders of eastern Canada. When you've finished for the day, come back to comfort and oceanside splendor.
