We are urban San Franciscans who always dreamed of having a property where we could get back to nature. We grew up fishing, hiking and exploring, and we can truly say we have found the perfect escape from our busy life in the city. It is a great pleasure to share our home with friends, family and guests.
The Owner purchased this house in 2010
Shingletown is a quaint community, just a few miles from Lassen National Park and surrounded by pristine lakes, streams and abundant hiking. We fell in love with the property's 20 acres which are home to deer, jack rabbits and countless species of birds. Even in summer, Shingletown is never crowded. It feels remote, but it is only 45 minutes away from the Shasta Premium Outlets and the town of Redding and its historic downtown.
Looking at the skies from the backyard, you will be amazed to see so many stars!!!!
My family (of 16) and I had a GREAT experience staying at the Lassen cabin! Not only was the caretaker (Erik) present upon arrival to answer all of our questions, but there was also a booklet with LOTS of information regarding the property and things to do in the surrounding area. John & Isabel have done a great job with this cabin, everything from dishes to furnishings are not only of great quality, but also beautiful. We all had a wonderful time cooking large meals in the kitchen, which had ample supply of cooking and serving ware (great assets)! We also enjoyed all of the amenities that the home offered, such as the hot tub, fire pit, horseshoe pit, ping pong table, media room, bikes and snow sleds! Thank you again to the owners for opening up their home, it is definitely a place we hope to visit again in the near future!
We rented this cabin for several days in June 2015 for a vacation with our extended family. There were thirteen of us ranging in age from 9 to 74. Each family group had adequate space for privacy, and there were plenty of large gathering spaces both indoors and out for the whole group to spend time together. We LOVED the property--the beautiful stream winding its way through the gorgeous wildflowers made for a breathtakingly stunning place for strolls, fishing, and conversation. The owners have placed cute and comfortable seating areas and hammocks throughout the property. Our group enjoyed badminton and bocce ball on the beautiful back lawn and spent many happy hours chatting and birdwatching on the back porch. We made good use of the cozy fire pit one night as well. The kitchen is well outfitted and we loved having a dining room table that accommodated all of us--it was also perfect for games and puzzles. Lassen National Park is a short drive away, and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring this gorgeous, uncrowded park. We really can't recommend this property and location highly enough--we have rented over thirty properties from VRBO over the past twenty years, and this is one of our favorites.
What a wonderful house! First off, it feels huge, there's a lot of square footage. There was plenty of room for the 18 of us. The kitchen was large and had a prep area which came in handy, and as suggested by Doreen who greeted us, we used the shelving in the kitchen hallway for our dry foods and snacks.
There are so many wonderful aspects about the house, our favorite was "the meadow" area (we called it) where we set up a volleyball net (which they provided) and played bat mitten (which they also provided) and beach volleyball (we brought the beach ball & they had a volleyball). There are a couple benches out there for those who just wanted to watch.
THE FIREPIT! The fire pit was clutch. There was wood for burning and there were metal skewers we used for cooking sausages and hotdogs (& SMORES!). There are little stumps around the fire pit to sit on too! We spent our time here singing freely around the fire under the stars while some of us played banjos and guitars.
We loved the creek, so cold & clear! Some of us waded through it, it's not very wide, and about 4 feet deep in the deepest parts. There are also picnic tables and benches along the path so you can stop and just sit for a while and listen. :)
Some other comments and likes:
Plenty of towels!
tons of condiments and spices
fireplace was a nice touch and did get used even though our visit was during the summer (August)
great open living area for large group hang outs
the house is even better looking than the pictures
Cons: There really aren't any, I'm searching here for one... the only thing I can think of was that my husband and I had a hard time figuring out how to work the kitchen appliances (a little more high-tech than the average dishwasher, oven, and microwave)
Make sure you bring food, you won't want to do food runs very often, the town is not close by. There is plenty of room in the kitchen, indoor and outdoor fridge for food and beverage.
Bring bug spray! Lots of land = lots of bugs!
It can be hard to find and service is patchy, so talk to the owner a few days before your trip and they'll give you the lowdown on how to get there beforehand.
It was hot during the day and chilly at night so bring warm clothes for night.
Thank you for our wonderful stay!
My family had a relaxing and enjoyable long weekend at Jackalope Acres. The house was incredibly clean. Jack and Isabel provided all we needed to know in advance, and we came prepared to kick back and unplug. My two young sons absolutely loved the wooded property. There was something new to discover each time we went for a walk, whether down to the creek or along trails. We utilized all the recreation the house provided - hot tub, canoe, mountain bikes, volleyball net, badminton, etc. It was a wonderful place to make some new family memories.
We are seven hiking buddies who stayed at this property during a trip to Lassen. The property is very convenient to the northwest entrance to the park. We really enjoyed our stay. The property has lots of wildflowers, birds, a beautiful stream. Beds and linens were perfect. Kitchen was very well equipped. Our host was very attentive. I would highly recommend this property to someone visiting this beautiful part of California.
We had a wonderful time at Jackalope Acres. The place is awesome. Everything is wood. Families had a very relaxing community time. It was like in a different time and space. Management was very helpful in greeting and explaining features. A bit a a drive from Redding but worth it once your there. We went into Redding every day for Wedding activities. Cabin life is the best. Activities included Kayaking, canoe, biking, hot tub and fire pit.
We had such a wonderful weekend with Four generations laughing, eating, fishing, and exploring. Some of the favorite features among our group was the fire pit, the creek running through the propert, the hot tub, and the fully stocked kitchen. Oh and the prime lizzard catching territory of course. The owners were so accomidating which really made planning our multi family trip a breeze. Thank you to the Yandells for opening up their home to us!
The secret undiscovered North State region of California around Lassen National Park is uncrowded and stunningly gorgeous. Hiking, plus kayaking and canoeing (we have the kayaks and the canoe for you!), incredible fishing, biking (we have those too!), star gazing, a small world class restaurant, wine tasting...These are just a few of your options in our neighborhood! Not to mention the amenities at our house.
