This 3000 square foot home, circa 1908, has 4 large bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, full gourmet kitchen with eat at island, and large formal area suitable for small gatherings. We just completed a total restoration of the home updating all the mechanical functions, while maintaining the charm and feel of a turn-of-the-century Italianate. On-demand water heating, split floor HVAC, gourmet kitchen with gas range, filtered drinking water supply and full laundry are just some of the new features added. We chose a flower theme to outfit the 4 bedrooms and each room includes many period-correct antiques and fixtures. Mattresses were chosen to give each room a different sleeping experience to gratify the pickiest individual (plush pillow top, firm, firm pillow top and a memory foam). One bedroom has an on-suite bath with stand up shower, and the other full bath with double vanity supplies the other bedrooms. The upstairs also has a large furnished parlor area for lounging and reading. This house sits on a 1 acre lot full of shade trees in the Humeston city limits. A front wrap-around porch and large back deck give guest an awesome outdoor area to relax and enjoy the great, clean Iowa air. The location is within 1 hour from Des Moines, 20 minutes of Lake Rathbun, 10 minutes from Stephens State Forest, and 1 block away from the famous Cinder Path bicycling trail that connects Humeston with Chariton. Humeston is also home to the local favorites Snyder's General Store and Grass Roots Inn that draw people from all over Iowa and Missouri to shop and dine.
Todd & Kari Lambirth are native southern Iowans with a passion for anything related to home and garden. Kari is the owner/grower at Ellis Greenhouse in Lucas, IA while Todd art directs for a woodworking publication in Des Moines. They have combined these two talents into the restoration of this turn-of-the-century Italianate and look forward to sharing it with the families of Humeston and any guests interested in exploring this wonderful area of Iowa.

In 1908, the Honorable Joseph E. Doze (former Iowa state senator) built this house for his wife Elizabeth. It was built near the bustling Humeston train depot and hotel, and with 4 large bedroom upstairs, it provided ample room for their 4 children. Over time, it has passed through many families who called it home, briefly serving as an Inn during the late 70s and early 80s. At the time of our purchase of this property in 2011, it had fallen into a sad state of dis-repair, but still showed signs of the splendor and elegance of a time gone by. One walk through the house proved to us that it had “great bones” and would be more than worthy of a total restoration.
The restoration involved a complete update of all the mechanical aspects of the home. New wiring, plumbing, HVAC and energy efficient windows make this home comfortable and safe. At the same time, great care was taken to make sure the house visually looks like it would have in 1908.
Why Humeston? We’ve been asked that by several of our friends when we decided to take on this project. After spending some time in this area, it becomes very easy to understand why this is an ideal location for those wanting to get away from it all and just “unplug” for a short time. That doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do though. Humeston is home to the famous Snyder’s’ variety store. Just ask any discerning shopper from southern Iowa if they’ve ever heard of Snyder’s and you’ll probably get an emphatic “Yes!” If you can’t find it in Jill’s store, it’s probably not worth finding. Adding to this great shopping experience is Sweet Southern Sass children’s clothing boutique, Whiddledottles Antiques and Front Street Market for all your grocery needs. What’s a great shopping trip without a great place to eat? For lunch head across the street from Snyder’s to the Grassroots Cafe and Gallery, a quaint setting for great food and local artisan offerings. For dinner, Wojo’s Bar and Grill offers midwest Americana dining at its best . What about recreation you say? Humeston is the trail head for the Cinder Path bike trail that travels 14 miles between Chariton and Humeston. Abundant wildlife and rare native habitat await you on this beautiful scenic trail. You are also within 10 minutes of Stephens State Forest, the largest forest reserve in Iowa, and 30 minutes from beautiful Lake Rathbun and all it has to offer.
Front Street Inn provided exactly what we needed. This is a beautifully renovated home with a lot of amenities which provided us with a great spot for family to come visit and was the perfect location to visit South Central Iowa attractions, and in case you have never been to Southern Iowa you should give it a try it is such a beautiful part of this country that we live in. This Inn has been well considered by its owners for the comforts of those who stay there from the linens, to a nicely equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, and comfortable seating areas, so in conclusion all I really have to say is well done and thank you.
What a beautiful property this is! It's exactly as described. My three sisters and I stayed here for our annual "Sisters Weekend" we have every fall. It was great for each of us to have our own room but gather in the dining room, kitchen and sun room for our meals and chats. All the decor was just beautiful and we all loved how well maintained the house was. The kitchen is to "die" for with the beautiful back-splash and counters. I especially loved the hardwood floors in the dining room and living room and the staircase was gorgeous. i can't say enough about the beauty of the entire house. One of my sisters went for a bike ride every morning and we did a little grilling out as well. We all enjoyed our rooms and felt the mattresses were especially comfortable. I got the canopy room and I slept so good. I was afraid I would hear the traffic noise since that's the side my room was on, but I didn't hear a thing all night. We visited several of the little shops in the downtown area and our mom is in a nursing home in a nearby town, so we were able to visit with her also. I loved the fact there were several items in the refrigerator we hadn't anticipated, but were useful, as well as several brands of coffee and other assorted condiments and of course, all the fresh fruit was delicious. Todd's father met us at the house when we arrived and he was very helpful in showing us around the property and answered all of our questions.
This is a beautiful property! It was just right for us. Everyone had relatively private spaces for their families to get away upstairs. Downstairs, the accommodations were perfect for the entire family to reunite.
My 3 adult children and their families came to town for my wedding and I was able to spend the night before with my children feeling the love :)
The day of the wedding; it was the perfect place to get ready and take photographs. The house, inside and out, as well as, the porches were beautiful backdrops for those photos!!

If you're looking for a nice, well-appointed home for up to four couples or a family gathering in a nice, quiet little town you can't go wrong with the Front Street Inn. We used it as the main gathering place for our "first annual" family reunion and it worked perfectly for our needs. In fact, it was more than perfect in many ways.
This big, square, vintage home has been restored with obvious attention to every detail. It's even better than you might expect from the photos on the HomeAway site. From the front entryway through the huge living areas to the spacious sun room and large dining room, plus the four bedrooms and upstairs lounge, there is space galore. The furnishings and appointments are top-notch, set among restored hardwood floors and woodwork and tasteful decor. The array of rooms provides multiple, welcoming areas for conversation or relaxation. Plus, with a full private bath and a full hallway bath upstairs, the half bath on the ground floor was a valuable bonus, especially with so many people in the house!
The bedrooms are all comfortable, with superb linens; there's an abundant supply of quality towels and washcloths; and every room has numerous, thoughtfully placed electrical outlets. True, there's no WiFi but there's free WiFi nearby and if you have a Verizon mobile hot spot you should have no problem.
The kitchen has been modernized and is beautifully designed and stunningly equipped. It includes a creative lighting scheme, quality appliances, and a convenient island with a wonderful country sink. The cabinets were stocked with multiple sets of flatware, more than enough dishes, glasses, and top-notch place settings, and every sort of pot, pan, cookie sheet, or utensil that you could conceivably want. Plus, we were provided fresh fruit, milk, OJ, condiments, spices, flour, sugar, coffee, butter, and so much more than we ever expected. The friendly owners provided outstanding customer service and have thought of everything to allow you to move right in and feel at home.
The large shaded yard, inviting front porch with hanging flowers, the large back deck with comfy patio furniture and gas grill, and the ample gravel parking space are additional delights.
The Grass Roots Cafe and Snyder's store nearby, on Broad Street, are among the don't-misses.
This home has every amenity that you can possibly desire, and then some. We heartily recommend it and will definitely be back!
The Front Street Inn was a great place for our family to stay and enjoy just being together. The facilities are up-to-date and the antiques help to maintain the period of the house. The bikes, deck, front porch and sunroom were enjoyed by the entire family. Thank you for providing so many wonderful bonuses. It was fun and refreshing to be able to walk around town. We enjoyed the local park and swimming pool.
Humeston Iowa is a small, charming southern Iowa town with just enough amenities to be comfortable, but rural enough for a total relaxation type of get away.

Our weekly rental fee will be based on a set fee of $100 per night for anything longer than the 2 night minimum. So as an example, if you plan to stay 5 nights, your total bill would be $700 + tax. We also have a 13 night maximum stay limit.
