In Iceland it’s illegal to rent out a house/apartment to visitors without having necessary licenses. This is to ensure the safety of tourists and to make sure they receive what they are paying for. The Health Authority, Fire Department, Sheriff and Building Supervisor have to give concent so houses/apartments get license.
We at Hofdatun are pleased to say that we have permission from those parties and are fully licenced vacancy house. Certificates are at display for our guests verification.
This beautiful house has 8 acers of land and is in the heart of south Iceland. It only takes 15 min. to drive to nearest town, Selfoss and 50 min. to Reykjavík or Thingvellir national park. Then its ideal to take the Golden Circle tour and drive to Gullfoss and Geysir. All around the old Geysir are more spouting hot springs, such as the ever lively Strokkur (the butter Churn), which erupts every 3-5 minutes.
Hofdatun is 140 m2. In Hofdatun are 3 bedrooms where 6 adults can sleep. Baby bed can be provided free of charge and also inflatable mattresses is provided as well. New sofa-bed in the living room (2 extra people)
The house and its surroundings is wonderful in all seasons.
At Hofdatun is a chicken coop so every morning you get fresh eggs for breakfast. There is also horse rental near by the house.
In the garden you get fresh strawberries, when at season, and herbs during the harvesting season. In the garden you also have large hot tub that is wonderful to bathe in winter as well as summer.
The view from Hofdatun is very wide, you can see the volcanic Islands Vestmannaeyjar as well as Ingolfsfjall and Eyjafjallajokull
In South Iceland you find all kind of entertainment. Among many other things you can enjoy art in museums and galleries, take a walk in prehistorical places or go surfing or river rafting (for the brave one!).

Hi! My name is Kristrún and i am born 1975. I am from Reykjavík and bought Hofdatun May 20. 2016. I want to share with you my beautiful vacation house, it has a magical surroundings and it´s very peaceful and quiet. Hofdatun has been a guest house since 2005 and the guests have been very happy, the location of the house is very good, close to all the gems in south Iceland.
Kristrun Dagný Matthiasdóttir purchased this house in 2011
Beautiful nature and lots to do and see in the area.
Peace and quiet is the first words that comes to my mind. During the summer time all you usually hear is the bird singing. In the winter the northern lights and all the bright stars in the sky are astonishing. Its also great to stay inside with hot chocolate, reading a book while snow blizzard is outside.
Located perfectly to travel a bit further east than from Reykjavik. We all loved it, ages 50+, 30+ 15yrs & 4 year old. Perfect accommodation, very comfortable beds. Horses at kitchen window were enchanting. We fell in love with the dogs and felt so sad to leave them. Our hostess (Thorey) is a lovely lady and I greatly admire the work she does at Hofdatun. A lot of snow when we arrived which was so beautiful. I love Iceland anyway but I would definitely love to stay at Hofdatun again when we return to Iceland for our third visit.
My family and I stayed at Hofdatun and loved it! Thørey helped the boys get fresh eggs and the house was stocked w a huge collection of movies which were fun for the kids. The Golden Circle is an easy drive, great location!
Stay away from this rental unless you want to stay in a poorly kept house & yard with an abusive landlord. It is not as presented on the website. In the front yard was a pile of debris, plastic bags clinging to the wire fence, and in the carpark & rest of the yard piles of horse manure & dog poop. No horses there we were told for months. The hot tub is not filled nor kept covered. In the house were strong smells of cigarettes & grease. The bathroom stunk of urine, what looked liked dirty towels on the counter & a wet bath mat hanging from the tub. I suggested to Thorey it might never dry, to which she replied ‘so what? You just will get it wet again anyway’. She knew we weren't happy. Our daughter came out of the bedroom & said she found hair (not from someone’s head) & stains in her bed. I looked at another bed & found small holes in the sheet. We decided to leave. We got the kids into the car, and my husband calmly told Thorey we were leaving because the house & grounds were completely different from what was on the website & the house just was not very clean. She asked what he meant & he listed the dirt, stains, hair in the beds, small holes in the sheet, stains under the duvet, stinking toilet – he told her the overall condition was just not for us. Thorey immediately got angry and told us we were rude and insulting. That it was a clean house and we owed her money. (We had given her a 20% deposit prior to the trip.) We said she had the deposit & we owed her nothing else. She demanded we show her the problems. Room by room, we did as she asked. She mocked us for pointing these things out and only became angrier. That’s when it got really bad. She began cursing at us, tried to block the hallway that lead to the door out of the house, and then shoved both of us from behind when we maneuvered past her. She pushed me so hard I stumbled as we were going toward the door. The name calling and cursing continued as we got into the car. With our girls witnessing Thorey’s yelling and gesturing, we drove away. That kind of treatment by anyone, under any circumstance, is completely unacceptable.
We had a great time :-).
A lot of fun and excellent dinner :-)
Thank you Thorey,
Hope we can see you soon for our next stay.
5 of us stayed here in October and had a wonderful time. The house is lovely and warm and very welcoming with plenty of space for people to relax and enjoy the beautiful countryside. We saw the Northern Lights from the garden too which was amazing (well to those of us who live in the UK and don't normally see anything but street lights from our gardens!)
It's an excellent base for travelling round that part of Iceland, we had a hire car and were easily able to drive the Golden Circle route and went down to the south to see the amazing icebergs in the glacier lagoon. We were also able to visit Reykjavik as well. We did all our food shopping in Selfoss and also had a lovely meal out there one night.
The owner is lovely, really friendly and helpful and none of us wanted to leave at the end of the week.
In October 2015 I stayed in Hofdatun for second time, after 2014 visit. I am already looking forward for my next visit there and I wish it to be soon. The place is cozy and charming. It is very convenient base for visiting different attractions in the whole South of Iceland. It has all the modern amenities and very helpfull owner. The beds are very comfortable and offer a good full relax after interesting day-trips. I witnessed very powerfull Northern Lights at Hofdatun. Highly recommended.
We stayed for two nights. Had the whole house to ourselves, due to it being off season. The house had everything we needed. Close to local sightseeing and town of Selfoss. We did not have a chance to see the horses or chickens. Thorey was a great host and has two happy dogs. Highly recommend this guest home.
On New Year´s Eve its tradition in Iceland to light a Elf Bunfire who has to burn the whole night. Icelanders believe that on New Year´s Eve Elf´s move from place to place, this fires are keept burning the whole night to help them to find theyr way and also to welcome them to live at your place. At Hofdatun we honor this old tradition and on the picture side you can see picture of the Elf Bonfire we had last New Year´s Eve. It´s simply magical to stand next to the fire, with a little imagination you can feel the presence of the Elf’s around you whispering their thanks to you :)
During the summer you have the horses grasing next to the house, you can go riding them, petting them or even witness the birth of a foal. The summer of 2014 we are expecting some 4-6 foals! To witness a birth of a foal is something you will never forget :)
